Have your say on England men this summer

  1. Eng 57-5published at 19.4 overs

Ben Stokes is in and is off the mark first ball with two tucked into the leg side.

He has to hurry to get back for the second and a better throw might have made things interesting.

The lights have just come on at Lord's, batting is not going to get much easier any time soon...

England are 31-4 since the rain break, and Harry Brook has 20 of those runs.

  4. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 19.3 overs

    Smith b Jamieson 1 (Eng 55-5)

Two kinds of leave - and this isn't a good one...

It's a nip-backer from Kyle Jamieson, good ball but far too full for Jamie Smith to be shouldering arms as he does.

He will have been thinking about the height of the bowler but we've seen plenty of balls stay low already on this pitch.

This doesn't stay particularly low, it just crashes into off stump and knocks it out of the ground.

Change of bowling, Kyle Jamieson replaces Nathan Smith from the Nursery End.

  6. Eng 55-4published at 19 overs

Inside edge from Harry Brook and the ball whistles past the stumps and bounces into the hands of the leg slip fielder.

A solid forward defensive stroke from Brook ends the over.

Will O'Rourke has bowled five overs in this spell now. How many more can he bowl? Will New Zealand ask him to go again given Matt Henry is still off the field?

  7. Eng 55-4published at 18.2 overs

Short ball again to Harry Brook, this time from Will O'Rourke, and again it's thrashed to the boundary.

Brook is trying to put the pressure back on the bowlers and hit England out of trouble, without taking any unnecessary risks so far.

  8. Eng 51-4published at 18 overs

    Smith 1, Brook 16

New Zealand put a man out on the hook as Nathan Smith bowls to Harry Brook.

It's a bluff with a full ball coming next, driven through mid-off for two by Brook.

But the next is short... and hammered in front of square for four by the England batter to take the home side to 50.

Some real fortune for Harry Brook, a real let off.

  10. dropped catch

Brook dropped on 8published at 17 overs

    Eng 44-4

Big chance for New Zealand but Devon Conway puts it down.

Short and a bit of width from Will O'Rourke, Harry Brook cuts it and the ball goes quickly to backward point.

It was pretty well timed and the ball bursts through Conway's hands. Let off for the England vice-captain. Will he make the Black Caps pay?

  11. Eng 43-4published at 16.2 overs

    Top shot.

Harry Brook adds another boundary through cover point with a smart drive off Will O'Rourke.

England have been criticised for being overly aggressive at times but they have to try and remain positive in this position rather than simply waiting for the wicket ball to arrive.

Starting to think maybe it isn’t the tactics or the team selection, and it’s simply that they aren’t very good at all.

  13. Eng 38-4published at 16 overs

After Nathan Smith hoops one past the outside edge, Harry Brook responds by putting a slightly over-pitched delivery through the covers.

Down the slope it goes and just about reaches the boundary before the fielder.

Cheers from the Lord's crowd, who maybe sense there won't get too many more chances in this innings.

Loose shot to end the over from Brook but, to his relief, the ball just misses the outside edge.

In the first 14 overs bowled today, only six deliveries were projected to hit the stumps, and England have lost two wickets from those six balls.

  15. Eng 34-4published at 15 overs

Jamie Smith, bumped up a place in the order, comes in with England in all sorts of bother.

After the wicket ball to Joe Root climbed, the next stays low.

We knew this was a bowl first day and it has certainly proven to be that. New Zealand have probed well and, in tough conditions, England have failed to come up with the answers so far.

What worries me is Harry Brook is looking tentative. I don't think with this pair that they can play defensively for a long period. England are really under the pump.

  17. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 14.4 overs

    Root c Blundell b O'Rourke 1 (Eng 34-4)

    Oh dear.

England sink deeper into the mire and Will O'Rourke is turning it on.

Brilliant spell from the big fast bowler and this is another beauty.

Pace, bounce and a bit of movement away to take a feather of an edge from Joe Root.

Simple catch for Tom Blundell. England have lost three wickets for 10 runs since the restart.

Since the start of 2025, Ben Duckett averages just 15 against pace when the ball is projected to hit the stumps, getting dismissed once every 11 balls.

  20. Eng 34-3published at 14 overs

Joe Root had the right idea, quick single first ball and get to the safety of the non-striker's end.

Best place to be as a batter at the moment.

Very good over from Nathan Smith, swinging it both ways.
