Just based on the first five or six overs I think England could benefit from having a couple of bowling coaches, just to fine tune the bowling section.

What is Jamie Overton going to do about his lengths?

  5. dropped catch

Rathnayake dropped on 12published at 12 overs

Salt in the wound for Jamie Overton, who is cursing under his breath.

Pavan Rathnayake hacks at a wide one but Tom Banton spills a diving effort at short third.

Re that Adil Rashid lbw review at 9.3 overs (14:15).

Harry Brook has only succeeded with two of his 24 bowling reviews as captain.

The average success rate is close to one in five.

  7. 6 runs

    SL 120-2published at 11.4 overs

Jamie Overton hurries Pavan Rathnayake with another short ball but the Sri Lanka batter top edges it over his head for six.

Rathnayake follows it up with a thumping pull for four off Overton. More conviction about that one.

Can we all agree now, Jamie Overton is way out of his depth in international cricket.

  9. 6 runs

    SL 113-2published at 11.1 overs

Pavan Rathnayake, who made a century in the ODI series against Sri Lanka, is the new batter in what is only his fifth T20 international.

A short ball from Jamie Overton sites up and is whacked overt he rope at square leg by Kusal Mendis. There's a hint of top edge but it's six nonetheless.

  10. wicket

    Mishara c Overton b Jacks 36 (SL 106-2)

Will Jacks changes his angles by going round the wicket. Harry Brook tweaks the field accordingly.

It does the job for England as Jacks' off breaks tempt Kamil Mishara into a big swipe into the leg side but he cannot quite generate enough power to clear Jamie Overton in the deep.

Highest economy rate in overs 1-6 since the 2024 T20 World Cup:

    • England - 9.89
    • South Africa - 9.28
    • Scotland - 8.95
    • Australia - 8.80
    • West Indies - 8.70

While these numbers are concerning for England's bowling line-up their batting looks to be more than making up for it, scoring at 10.48 runs per over inside the powerplay in the same timeframe.

No matter what happens here, that England let Sri Lanka again get such a strong start in the powerplay is a worry just a week off the World Cup.

  13. drinks break

Sri Lanka 102-1 at drinkspublished at 10 overs

Kusal Mendis rocks back and wallops Adil Rashid through mid-wicket for four to get Sri Lanka past the 100-mark.

  14. Mendis survivespublished at 9.3 overs

It was the googly from Adil Rashid but it was deemed to have pitched outside the line.

    Kamil Mishara survives.

  15. England reviewpublished at 9.3 overs

Kamil Mishara is struck on the pad attempting to work Adil Rashid off his legs.

England appeal but it's turned down.

However, Harry Brook fancies a look.

  16. SL 92-1published at 9 overs

The hulking figure of Jamie Overton is summoned by Harry Brook and concedes nine runs off his over.

He offers a little bit too much width early in his over to the left-handed Kamil Mishara, who thrashes it off the vacant third region for four.

A bit of fortunate for the Sri Lankan opener but he will not care a jot.

Overton battles back well in the remainder of the over but England are looking at something north of 200 here.

This is an important phase because England will be going heavy with spin.

  18. SL 83-1published at 8 overs

Liam Dawson pushes it through a little more but Kusal Mendis is on to it as quick as a flash and sweeps it fine for another four.

  19. 6 runs

Harry Brook shuffles his pack again as Liam Dawson returns.

Dawson hangs it back a little but Kamil Mishara goes down on one knee and hammers it for six over the advertising hoardings.
