Steve Smith has just asked for his black tape. Nathan Lyon delivers. Would love to know what Lyon is thinking. "This bloke has left me out of the team and now he's asking me to run around with black stickers."

The problem with this England side is we're always on the edge of our seats. We all know there is a moment of madness that can happen at any stage.

Zak Crawley shows some restraint to Michael Neser, defending four consecutive deliveries from the Aussie seamer.

The problem with Ollie now is you can read his innings and you can see what exactly he is going to do. If I can see it from here, I'm pretty sure that the bowlers can see it. You just can't play that way at this level.

England will always play this way, but surely if they want to be a good team they have to go up and down in the gears.

My disappointment with this team in the last couple of years is they continue to make mistakes when they just start to get on top.

Classic Ollie Pope. He actually looked one of England's most accomplished batters in Perth, especially in the first innings, having got a couple of decent scores in the warm-up game against the Lions.

Returns of 0 and 26 might here not be enough to save him although it's not like Jacob Bethell has been tearing up any trees either.

Joe Root, meanwhile, looks pretty organised and relaxed to the channels Brendan Doggett is looking to land the ball in as the Barmy Army serenade the son of Yorkshire.

Root carefully steers a pull round the corner off Doggett to keep the strike.

That has to be the end of Ollie Pope's run in the team. Poor batting, completely ignoring the game situation on a very flat pitch. Give Jacob Bethell a proper go.

    Dan, Wirral

The problem with Ollie Pope is he never feels too far away from a shot like that. Gifted batter on his day and capable of huge scores. But bowlers know that more often than not, he gives them easy chances and throws away his wicket. Happens time and time again.

Ollie Pope might not believe it, but I think the rest of us definitely can.

Joe Root strolls out to the middle and is quickly off the mark with a nudge behind square for a couple.

Ollie Pope looks to the heavens. He cannot believe what he has done.

    A charmed life indeed.

Ollie Pope's luck always felt like it was going to run out if he continued in this vein, and it ultimately proves to be the case.

The England number three drives down the wrong line to the first ball of Michael Neser's spell - fuller outside off - and gives the Aussie seamer a simple return catch.

Ben Duckett was unlucky, but this is pure batter error.

That ‘if’ in Sam’s post at 09:45 is doing a lot of heavy lifting.

Re Sam at 09:45 - Whilst I agree England are capable of getting to 350, they failed to do it when conditions were easier!

This is the easiest bit of captaincy that Steve Smith is going to have.

He will say, 'Whenever times get hard, whack one wide of off stump and they will come to us'.

  12. Eng 90-1published at 17 overs

Ollie Pope drives on the up against the returning Brendan Doggett, prompting a brilliant diving effort from the Yorkshire-Aussie Josh Inglis in the covers.

A charmed life for Pope a couple of balls latter when he drives in a flashy manner again but ends up edging it a few feet over the slip cordon..

    England trail by 87 runs.

Huge innings for Ollie Pope here, technical flaws exposed already in the first one-and-a-half Tests. He needs an ugly long knock.

Those dropped catches last night really hurt England. Body blows.

Scott Boland has got them to keep low outside of the off stump. He has a heavy ball, and he then gets something to happen if it hits a crack.

Edge of your seat stuff. There is that area from the Stanley Street End where there is that good-ish length. It it's keeping low it will be playing in the batters' mind.

Scott Boland is not offering quite as much width - honing in on the stumps - but provided the awkward bounce which accounted for Ben Duckett does not not rear its head it's fairly comfortable going for Zak Crawley and Ollie Pope.

Let's not get all doom and gloom just yet - if the pitch is starting to misbehave, I think England will only need to defend 200. They're capable of getting to 350 if they just bat with a modicum of respect.

Zak Crawley and Ollie Pope content to keep driving to Mitchell Starc.

Crawley picks up a single with a square drive, before Pope misses with an airy waft.

    Driving miss (sending us) crazy.

PitchViz - Bounce Inconsistency Rating - Second Test

(Higher the number, the more inconsistent the bounce)

    • Day 1 - 4.8
    • Day 2 - 6.8
    • Day 3 (Australia's innings) - 6.9
    • Day 3 (England's innings) - 8.5

11 overs into the innings and with the uncertain nature of the ball keeping up and down consistently on this pitch, England's batters are facing the toughest conditions in the match so far with the PitchViz bounce inconsistency rating of 8.5 so far.

Ollie Pope goes through his between-ball routine of undoing the Velcro on his gloves then fastening it back up again.

Pope latches on to one which is slightly over pitched by Scott Boland and he sweetly strikes a check drive straight down the ground for four.

    A confidence booster.
