Zak Crawley has now scored 93 runs off 87 balls playing on the front foot in this Test. Before this Test, he had seven dismissals in Australia off the front foot at an average of 15.6. In Tests since 2006 at The Gabba, only three batters have scored more runs off the front foot in a match than Crawley.

Most runs off the front foot against pacers at Gabba

    • 1) Michael Clarke - 125 off 229 balls v South Africa, 2012
    • 2) Murali Vijay - 116 off 125 balls v Australia, 2014
    • 3) David Warner - 106 off 116 balls v New Zealand, 2015
    • 4) Zak Crawley - 93* off 87 balls v Australia, 2025

You always feel that morale is high against Zak Crawley even though he might hit you a bit.

  4. Eng 71-1published at 12.2 overs

Zak Crawley survives. By a couple of inches.

Another big drive off Mitchell Starc this time and it flies to gully region where the imposing figure of Cameron Green is lurking menacingly. All 6ft 6in of him. Like Jaws out of James Bond.

Green raises his hands to catch the ball but it goes just over him.

A lucky escape for the England opener, who picks up a rather fortunate boundary.

  5. Eng 66-1published at 12.1 overs

The ball which got Ben Duckett from Scott Boland really did stay very low.

Tea came at the wrong time. England had confidently seen off the first six overs and had put a small dent into the Aussie defence. We’ve now seen how important that tea break has been for Australia. Momentum and pressure has shifted.

  7. Eng 63-1published at 12 overs

Ollie Pope is confident enough to step across his stumps a fraction and clip Scott Boland off his toes for four. Nicely played.

Later in the over Zak Crawley drives, gloriously, through mid-on for four...only to follow it up with a big booming cover drive which does not connect.

There's slightly a difference in the game since before the break. It is in full darkness with a hard ball. Scott Boland has got his tail up here. Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett looked very comfortable before the break, but now it is inconsistent with the bounce.

  9. Eng 52-1published at 11 overs

Steve Smith can sense the pressure building on England and recalls Mitchell Starc, to the attack.

Starc's family heritage is Slovenian, incidentally. He reckons his surname was Starcovic once up a time.

The menacing pink-ball maestro from Maribor, maybe? The lethal left-armer from Ljubljana, perhaps?

Zak Crawley picks up a couple with an inside edge down to fine leg.

Scott Boland is loving this. He is in absolute control at the moment.

  11. Eng 50-1published at 10 overs

Scott Boland looks a real threat for Australia. Insert a cliche about having the ball on a piece of string.

And so it begins….. dread turns to promise and now a realisation of Aussie dominance down under.

Australia wicketkeeper Alex Carey, that well-known ambassador of fair play, appeals for a caught-behind off a delivery from Scott Boland which clearly struck Zak Crawley on the pad.

Marnus Labuschagne, stood next to him in the slips, wants none of it.

A couple of balls later Boland raps Ollie Pope on the pad, but Steve Smith declines to review with it seemingly hitting the England opener outside the line.

Brendan Doggett finds some extra bounce off the Gabba pitch to give Ollie Pope a few issues during a maiden over.

Massive, massive session for England coming up. It’s all about discipline and shot selection.

The sideways view of that dismissal really showed how much that delivery from Scott Boland kept low.

Boland draws a leading edge from the bat of Ollie Pope with his next delivery but it falls short of the Aussie seamer to deny him a caught-and-bowled chance.

If it's on line of the stumps there is not a huge amount you can do with it. The cracks are starting to play.

The body language of Ben Duckett suggests that stayed very low.

Duckett is walking off like a man betrayed.

    Duckett b Boland 15 (Eng 48-1)

Scott Boland manages to sneak one through the defence of Ben Duckett.

It's on a length from the Aussie seamer but stayed a bit low and scuttles off the toe of Duckett's bat and into the stumps.

Duckett drags his heels as he trudges off.

The line was good, just a little high from Brendan Doggett.
