  1. Aus 391-7published at 78 overs

Excellent channels from Ben Stokes who dangles the carrot to Mitchell Starc wide of off stump, much in the same way the Aussie left-arm quick has done to England's batters, before straightening his line.

    Starc resists the bait.

England have the new ball available in a couple of overs when, one assumes, we might see Jofra Archer and Gus Atkinson.

Although with the way Stokes is bowling with the older ball, there might be a temptation to keep going

BTW. This is the first time Alex Carey has made it past 30 in an Ashes Test since the Jonny Bairstow stumping.

  4. Aus 390-7published at 77 overs

Alex Carey leans back and watches a short ball from Brydon Carse right on to the face of his horizontal bat and he duly lifts it over the slips for four. Top shot.

Later in the over Mitchell Starc gets off the mark with a risky single but Ben Stokes' shy at the stumps is a little wayward.

    Captain fantastic does it again.

Jamie Smith's heart might have been in his mouth as Michael Neser nicked that. Smith didn't have a great day yesterday.

The wicketkeeper is your engine and when they lose a bit of confidence they go into their shell a bit.

The wicketkeeper is your main driver on tough days.

    Yes, Ben Stokes!

Forget the dark side. Maybe the force is with England today?

Final ball of the over, back of a length from the skipper, and Michael Neser cannot resist having a bit of a waggle at it.

He duly nicks and Jamie Smith claims a comfortable catch.

Alex Carey is very much improved. We were asked to pick our combined side, and I was edging towards Jamie Smith, but Carey has blown past him. Carey kept beautifully in that first innings.

A whole swathe of Aussies are dressed as stormtroopers from Star Wars. The Imperial March has just played as Darth Vader entered.

Alex Carey square drives for a single off Ben Stokes. He has a 52-ball half-century.

  9. Aus 381-6published at 75 overs

Brydon Carse, expensive but effective in terms of wickets, bowls England's second over.

Square jawed and stocky, Carse looks like he has been carved from granite.

Alex Carey and Michael Neser both work Carse square of the wicket to pick up singles before the former cuts precisely to keep the strike.

The first hour of today's session I feel will determine the winner of this series. If we don't get restrict the flow of runs then game over. Please, please just bowl a good line and length. It's simple!!

  12. Aus 379-6published at 73.2 overs

The travelling England fans give a hearty rendition of Jerusalem. Joe Root applauds.

Alex Carey pokes Ben Stokes' second delivery behind point to score his first run of the day.

Michael Neser content to block out the remainder of the over. Australia will want to keep England out there as long as possible today.

  13. Postpublished at 03:59 GMT 6 December 2025

England captain Ben Stokes has decided he will bowl the first over and is limbering up at the top of his mark.

    Alex Carey on strike.

Right, England's players are making their way out to the middle at the Gabba, swiftly followed by Alex Carey and Michael Neser.

Still quite a few of empty seats as fans make their way into the ground.

It's an absolute sizzler today in Brisbane by the way...

Slip, slap, slop as Richie Benaud used to remind us in his own imitable way.

I said months ago that England have a great chance, but the one thing we don't focus on in the UK, and they focus so much on it here in Australia is catching and fielding.

We have come here again and five catches have gone done. Two or three of them were goobers have have to be taken.

It is a consistent trend now when an England team come to Australia you drop a catch or two and the crowd get on you.

One thing is for certain... England need to improve their catching today after shelling five chances in the field yesterday.
