Absolutely anything could happen here. England could lose tonight. They could get a lead.

Does that count as a leave for Ben Duckett? He pulls his bat out of the way of a delivery from Brendan Doggett which bounces and climbs away from the outside edge of the left-hander's bat.

Duckett dabs a single next ball to get Zak Crawley back on strike. The penultimate ball of the over is a peach on a fifth-stump line from Doggett which gets Crawley playing and missing with a defensive stroke.

Final ball of the over and Doggett strikes Crawley high on the pad, but Steve Smith gesticulates height is an issue.

There is no shame seeing out some overs - get some softness into the ball.

  5. What's happened today...published at 08:54 GMT 6 December 2025

Guten morgen, bonjour, buenos dias, bom dia. Guessing you're here about what's happened on day three of the second Ashes Test, right?

Well, it's been Australia's day in Brisbane thus far - but England are fighting back. Here's a quick recap...

Australia resumed on 378-6 and Ben Stokes removed Michael Neser, caught by Jamie Smith, for 16 in the second over of the day.

Alex Carey helped the score along with a 52-ball half-century as he and Mitchell Starc shared a 33-run stand for the eighth wicket.

Gus Atkinson bagged the wicket of Carey - his first of the series - for 63 when the Ausse left-hander slashed at one and Smith gobbled up the catch.

Starc then continued his one-man crusade to thwart England - this time with the bat en route to a half-century.

Starc ground down a tired England bowling attack who looked cooked on a steamy day in Brisbane.

The 35-year-old applied himself superbly, carefully choosing when to attack and defend. He and Scott Boland shared a 75-run stand for the ninth wicket.

Starc was eventually out for 77 when he skied Brydon Carse to mid-off where Ben Stokes took the catch after a nearly colliding with Ben Duckett.

Starc had the fourth-highest score of an Australian who had also taken a first-innings five-for.

Boland and Brendan Doggett added another 20 for the last wicket before Will Jacks had the latter caught at slip by Harry Brook.

Doggett was eventually dismissed when he chipped Brydon Carse to mid-off where Ben Stokes took the catch after a near-collison with Ben Duckett.

Australia were all out for 511 leaving England a tricky 30 minutes to bat before the tea/dinner break.

In true Bazball fashion, Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett decided to go on the counter-attack - as they reached 45-0 off just six overs.

Crawley will resume unbeaten on 26 while Duckett, who offered a tough caught-and-bowled chance to Neser, is 13 not out. England trail by 132 runs.

England don't think about when the breaks are coming up. Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett just go! They clear their mind and just play.

The most Bazballian way to carefully see off the five overs to tea!

England all out tonight. They’re playing almost a shot a ball. Zak Crawley’s waft outside off against Mitchell Starc after hitting two boundaries was a safe mortgage bet.

    Thanks, Elizabeth.

I'm hoping for some textual healing with some England runscoring after enduring the majority of Australia's lower-order resistance earlier.

Sorry Phil, I am going to go somewhere because it's time for me to handover to Timothy Abraham.

Hopefully his arrival won't trigger a flurry of wickets after the break...

Don't go anywhere back home. Make yourself a cup of tea and put the eggs and bacon on.

Get yourself back here for what could be one of the most exciting sessions.

It is going to be great! We could be in for something a little bit special after this break. Can England choose their shots?

Well, despite the poor bowling by England, I am hoping that Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett will be able to defend their wickets and go through the day unbeaten.

Glorious from Zak Crawley. A corker of an off drive. Mitchell Starc was searching a little bit with the full-ish delivery.

Can it continue? Where they have got in trouble in the past is when they get into a position where they're on top and a little bit of cleverness from Starc in getting it wider, England have succumbed.

    Have England learned?

Zak Crawley drives through mid-off for four to take England's deficit under 150. Two balls later... four more!

And then, the first heart-in-mouth moment of Crawley's innings, swinging recklessly. It narrowly misses his edge as it flies through to Alex Carey's gloves.

With less than five minutes to go before tea, now is NOT the time, Zak.

A stroke of luck for Ben Duckett there! Trying to smack the ball down the ground, he narrowly avoids being caught by bowler Michael Neser, who throws both of his hands up but can only parry the powerfully struck shot.

Next ball... four byes. Ho hum. An all-run four to finish the over.

We don't mess about when we get going, but can we keep it going? It is going to be about shot selection.

Mitchell Starc smiles and lets out an "oooh" after getting one to nip away and beat Ben Duckett's edge.

But it's a productive over for England, Zak Crawley finishing it with a clipped four. Nine from it.
