Cast your mind back to the start of the day and Australia were 378-6.

They piled on a further 133 before being bowled out for 511, leading by 177.

And after a promising start, England faltered from 45-0 at tea to 134-6 at the close of play. It's not looking good.

  2. Eng 134-6 - trail by 43 runspublished at 35 overs

    Stokes 4 (24), Jacks 4 (9)

Mitchell Starc, who I'm thinking of creating a keyboard shortcut for given he's in the action so often, bowls the final over of the day.

He finishes with a maiden to Will Jacks.

England, who were 45-0 for tea (sorry, it had to be said), finish day three on 134-6, trailing by 43 runs.

Time for honesty, England. Just admit we’ve been completely outplayed and don’t even think about telling us we can win this series 3-2. Such a poor effort after all the talk beforehand.

Scott Boland's accuracy with his line and length control in this innings has been exceptional.

With the up and down nature of this pitch today, 84% of Boland's deliveries have ended up in the channel or in line with the stumps - the most accurate of the Australian pacers today.

  5. Eng 134-6published at 34 overs

A relatively low-key over from Scott Boland, which I think we all needed.

Ben Stokes dashes for a mid-over two but otherwise it's all leaves and defence.

  6. Not outpublished at 33 overs

    Eng 132-6

Thigh pad - not out. Will Jacks survives.

England trail by 45 runs with four wickets remaining. Jacks has 4 (3), Ben Stokes has 2 (16).

There was a sound. It was quick, short and leg stump-ish.

I think Will Jacks is confident that he got away with it.

  8. Australia reviewpublished at 33 overs

That's a lovely catch! Alex Carey leaping to his left!

He likes it, Mitchell Starc likes it, the umpire... does not.

    Steve Smith makes the T.

That is a big deflection... Maybe it was Ben Stokes that told Jamie Smith to review it.

England lose their sixth - not a great shot, again. A wafty drive.

Looking at some England supporters on the screen. A painful experience for them.

    That's a poor review. A desperate review.

Jamie Smith departs for 4, nicking through to wicketkeeper Alex Carey, who is having an excellent Test.

Mitchell Starc has 2-44 from 10.3 overs.

Why would Jamie Smith check with Ben Stokes if he hit it? He should know straight away!

The umpire raises his finger straight away! He's given Jamie Smith out caught behind.

He comes together with Ben Stokes for a chat and goes upstairs.

England aren't even getting out to Bazball cricket, they're getting out to just very very poor batting all round! Australia made batting look easy, we, somehow, make it look difficult... How?

    Tommy, Perth

How did the Australians get 500+ on this pitch. Our bowling was woeful and no-one had the sense to change it. What are our analysts getting paid for?

    Lee, Kent

My understanding of the meaning of madness is doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting different results. Stokes and McCullum need a different approach. Whatever this is we’re serving up, it’s just not working.

It is important that these Ben Stokes and Jamie Smith get through this last 17 minutes.

Scott Boland is bowling with his tail up, he loves these conditions and these pitches.

  16. Eng 127-5published at 32 overs

    Trail by 50 runs

A helmet is brought out for Travis Head, who stations himself at short leg. Jamie Smith ignores that area completely and powers Scott Boland down the ground for four.

Next ball, he puffs out his cheeks as the ball whistles past his inside edge.

Joe Root has now been dismissed by Mitchell Starc on 11 occasions in Tests, going on par with Pat Cummins and Jasprit Bumrah as the bowlers to have dismissed him most frequently in the longer format.

In these conditions it is nipping around off the pitch and it is hard work.

Mitchell Starc has got his tail up - 145kph (90mph).

Cricket at this level is about body language. Look at England's body language in the earlier parts of today.

Even when things aren't going your way you have got to be up and you have got to be ready for it.

  19. Eng 123-5published at 31 overs

Mitchell Starc - six wickets in the first innings, top-scoring with the bat for Australia, a second innings wicket - is still flinging it down at 90mph.

Ben Stokes leaves the first four alone and solidly defends the next two.

Just give them the urn and go home. It’s done. 5-0, and that looks generous to England.

    Maty, Oxford

England should declare. This is a woeful watch.

    Don, Essex

England are out of there depth here. They have zero consistency. An easy 5-0 for Australia.
