  6. Notts target final flurry of Hants wicketspublished at 10:53 BST 16 May

    Hampshire 152-6 v Notts

    Fergus O'NeillImage source, Shutterstock

Primarily it is hoped for all concerned that we see more cricket at Southampton today than was managed yesterday because of adverse weather.

Nottinghamshire won the toss at the Utilita Bowl, decided to put Hampshire in and, by the close of play had reduced them to 152-6 - thanks in no small part to the bowling acumen of overseas quick Fergus O'Neill, who currently has figures of 4-32.

Felix Organ returns to the crease on 34 not out after a counter-attacking innings, but Notts are undeniably in the driving seat having justified their decision to field first until now.

O'Neill mapped out the simple plans, for this morning's session, for the visitors at the close of play last night - wrap things up quickly. He also complimented England pace pair Olly Stone and Josh Tongue.

“It is not a bad day," he said. "It has been stop and start so it is better to be a bowling side when that is the case. We’ve tried to take advantage of that but these two have put on a decent partnership so we’ll try and break that in the morning.

“It would be nice to pack up Tongue and Stone and take them everywhere. It is a bit of fire and ice. They are two quality bowlers and hopefully we get the job done together in the morning.”

  7. Kellaway puts Glamorgan in strong positionpublished at 10:51 BST 16 May

    Glamorgan 341-8 v Warwickshire

Glamorgan return to the field of play on day two of their County Championship meeting with Warwickshire in a good place after a fruitful first day with the bat, thanks in no small part to the talents of Ben Kellaway.

Coming to the crease alongside Kiran Carlson with Glamorgan rocking at 0-2 Kellaway, who has been involved with the England Lions before now, led the fight-back with a terrific knock of 139.

While Glamorgan were well placed and in a position of power at 287-4, Warwickshire did make in-roads with the new ball in the evening session.

Oliver Hannon-Dalby (3-46) and Ethan Bamber (3-61) led the way for the Bears attack, and they will hope to take the remaining wickets and wrap up Glamorgan’s innings sharpish before setting about replying.

Glammy, with young Tom Norton (25*) and Mason Crane (14*) out in the middle, will first and foremost look to secure their third batting bonus point and add as many runs as they can this morning before having a crack at the Bears top order.

It is overcast in Birmingham, with a chance of showers, but there is optimism for plenty of play throughout the day.

  8. Somerset edge day one in Tauntonpublished at 10:49 BST 16 May

    Somerset 335-5 v Sussex

    Tom AbellImage source, Getty Images

The game was finely poised when the hosts slipped to 46-2 in the first hour, but half centuries from James Rew (86), Tom Lammonby (73) and an unbeaten 74 from the in-form Tom Abell have given Somerset momentum.

However, Sussex will not be discouraged at this stage.

Ollie Robinson bowled exemplary spell for his 1-28 off 13 overs, plus the visitors were aided by some soft dismissals - and we may yet see some more.

Lammonby was lured out of his crease and stumped by a wide ball, while Rew played an ugly flashing drive and was caught deep in the off side by James Coles off the bowling of Tom Haines - and this was after he'd been dropped twice either side of lunch.

Despite a green-tinged appearance this pitch has been largely true and feels like a 400 par surface. Sussex are still in this game with early wickets.

  9. Weather has improved in SE Londonpublished at 10:47 BST 16 May

    Kent 385-4 v Durham

    Martin Emmerson
    BBC Radio Newcastle

It seems a lot warmer in Beckenham today. The wind has switched direction and no longer has that northerly bite to it. But there may be a bit of rain around later this afternoon.

As for Kent, they will look to continue building up the runs on a 'road' as flat as the A17 through the Fens.

Ben Dawkins, playing in his eighth first-class match, is on 181.He was joined late last night by Chris Benjamin, who has six.

Dawkins put on 303 for the second wicket with Sam Northeast yesterday, who was eventually out for 141, as Kent suffered a little wobble, slipping from 364-1 to 368-4 in the space of 3.4 overs.

Tawanda Muyeye and Daniel Bell-Drummond, both fell for one, having sat with their pads on for much of the day.

    Yorkshire 362-4 v Surrey

Yorkshire start day two against Surrey 362-4 with Jonny Bairstow (116*) and Adam Lyth (138*) having put together a fifth-wicket stand currently worth 241 runs.

The White Rose recovered superbly after losing Joe Root and Harry Brook early in the afternoon session to claim three batting points, punishing a waning Surrey bowling attack who failed to threaten after taking the new ball.

It was Bairstow's first century since being named Yorkshire's red-ball captain in March 2025 as the 36-year-old surpassed 15,000 first-class career runs.

Former Yorkshire bowler Matthew Fisher, now playing for the Brown Caps, took three of Surrey's four wickets on the first day - dislodging both Root and Brook.

"We’re a bit disappointed. I think we missed an opportunity maybe earlier on to capitalise on a decent start," Fisher said last night.

"Being honest, I thought with the second new ball I was awful. I let us down a little bit.

“But we'll come back in the morning and try and get an early pole, and then you never know."

  11. Bowling as unit key to Essex recoverypublished at 10:42 BST 16 May

    Essex 10-1 v Leicestershire 333

    Wiaan MulderImage source, Shutterstock

Bowling as a unit after lunch was the key to Essex's fightback on day one against Leicestershire, according to all-rounder Wiaan Mulder.

The home side came under fire from Sol Budinger (89) and Jake Weatherald during the morning, but a few quiet words from skipper Tom Westley put them on the right track.

"My first over was terrible. I think I got my run-up a little bit wrong, but that is how the game goes. I put us in a bad position, so I had a lot of motivation to bowl better and give us a bit of a chance with a couple of wickets," said Mulder, who finished with 3-70.

"The captain had a word or two when we got into the changing room at lunch and I think that was pretty much all we needed at that stage. I mean, nobody is trying to not bowl well, so it’s not a situation where anyone needed a kick up the backside."

  12. Tense day awaits in Bristolpublished at 10:40 BST 16 May

    Gloucs 154 v Northants 37-3

Gabe Bell takes a wicketImage source, Shutterstock

Weather permitting - this will be a tough resumption for Northants after losing three cheap wickets shortly after a spell off the field for poor light on Friday evening.

At that stage the visiting side were relatively comfortable on a seaming wicket at 22-0.

Then Ricardo Vasconcelos was pinned lbw by Matt Taylor.

One over later, Gabe Bell removed night watcher Harry Conway and Calvin Harrison with successive deliveries.

Northants captain Luke Procter survived the onslaught unbeaten on 15 and will be joined by Nathan McSweeney on four not out.

A low scoring game is surely on the cards - but then look what happened at Edgbaston last week.

  13. 'I'm just trying to give it my best go' - Dawkinspublished at 10:37 BST 16 May

    Kent 385-4 v Durham

    Ben DawkinsImage source, Getty Images

Kent opener Ben Dawkins spared a thought for injured team-mate Ben Compton following his career-best 181 not out on the opening day against Durham at Beckenham.

Compton has been a fixture at the top of the Kent order for a number of season but is currently out of action because of a finger injury.

"It's a very unfortunate because he's one of our best batters, for sure. I'm just trying to give it my best go. It's a very good opportunity for me to try and not take his place, but put my foot down and try and get onto the team," 19-year-old Dawkins said.

"I’ve got a few 60s (before) and actually spoke to Smokes [coach Adam Hollioake] last week about trying to convert them into bigger scores. I've loved it so far. Just to be around the group and the dressing room has been so good."

  14. How's the weather looking?published at 10:35 BST 16 May

"Today will see sunshine to start in central and eastern parts, but it will turn increasingly cloudy from the west through the day. Spells of generally light rain will move into western areas."
