We've had rather too many interruptions by the weather, but there have still been some notable individual performances on day two of the current round of County Championship matches.

Chief among them was Ben Aitchison following up his five-for for Derbyshire at Lord's with a century alongside skipper Wayne Madsen and then taking another wicket at the start of Middlesex's second innings.

He even overshadowed Essex's Jamie Porter, who made his maiden first-class 50 in his 178th match in front of the great and the good of years gone by on the club's Past Players Day.

Elsewhere, Somerset stalwarts Tom Abell and Craig Overton made hundreds before they declared against Sussex, but Emilio Gay was out for nought for Durham against Kent.

We'll be back with you again tomorrow for day three. Please join us again from 10:30 BST.

  3. Close of play at Bristolpublished at 19:23 BST 16 May

    Gloucs 154 & 21-3 v Northants 127

Harry Conway to bowl the last over of the day.

Three slips and a short leg in place.

Ollie Price leaves outside off stump.

Beaten outside off playing back and an appeal for caught behind is turned down.

The umpires have called time for bad light and a frenetic evening of cricket is ended two balls into the over.

Northants resumed on 37-3 on a rain interrupted Day Two and crumbled on a seaming track to 127. 5-36 for Matt Taylor.

Gloucestershire promoted two tail enders to open the second innings and both departed inside seven overs - Miles limping off after injuring himself taking a second run and requiring his opening partner (Will Williams) to come back on as a runner.

Two wickets in two balls from Harry Conway - who was convinced he had Ollie Price caught behind in his spell.

But Price survives on a six-ball nought with his captain Cam Bancroft unbeaten on six.

    Gloucs 154 & 21-3 v Northants 127

Two overs left tonight. Leg side from Ben Sanderson and keeper Lewis McManus dives to stop the ball down the leg side.

Cam Bancroft gets a good stride in and leaves outside off stump.

An away swinger curves away sharply and McManus does well to stop it.

    Maiden over.

    Gloucs 154 & 21-3 v Northants 127

Ollie Price sees out the over.

Big LBW appeal from behind the wicket but nothing from bowler Harry Conway and Cam Bancroft is safe.

Bancroft leaves a wider ball outside off, raising his bat like a periscope.

A clip to mid wicket brings two runs.

A thick outside edge passes wide of the slips for one and Ollie Price is beaten on the outside edge trying to defend.

Huge appeal for caught behind... Not out. Thigh pad.

Very big appeal and it looks like the umpire has called for calm.

    Miles c Procter b Sanderson 11 (Gloucs 154 & 18-3 v Northants 127)

Craig Miles is back to drive through the off side and he does drift out of the crease before leaving it to the runner.

    Two runs there.

A slower ball is full, leg side and lofted to Luke Procter at mid on.

    Ben Sanderson strikes.

The second night watcher loses his full mobility and now his wicket and he'll be replaced by Ollie Price - who scored a valuable 50 in the Gloucestershire first innings.

  7. Runner on for Milespublished at 19:05 BST 16 May

    Gloucs 154 & 16-2 v Northants 127

There's no immediate danger of a game of cricket breaking out in what is now a full committee meeting with three members of the Gloucestershire support staff.

One floodlight has blinked off and now a runner is coming on.

The world has frankly gone mad. Will Williams is the runner.

  8. Postpublished at 19:03 BST 16 May

    Gloucs 154 & 16-2 v Northants 127

Can Northants get another before the close?

A loose drive on the inside half of the bat to the leg side.

A very ambitious two runs for Craig Miles off Ben Sanderson only just beating the return throw and now it appears he has an injury.

He's bent over and stretching his hamstrings. Cramp?

    Gloucs 154 & 14-2 v Northants 127

Still three slips in for Harry Conway - and Saif Zaib is in the gully.

Craig Miles waits and drives a back of a length ball safely to Nathan McSweeney for no run.

A punch to mid off drops just short of Ben Sanderson.

Shot! width and driven on the up through extra cover for four.

One more run steered wide of gully.

  10. Postpublished at 18:54 BST 16 May

    Gloucs 154 & 9-2 v Northants 127

Goodness me. Cam Bancroft is forward, down and across to Ben Sanderson and the ball bounces low and moves away.

And again. A leg side gully is in and Sanderson fires in a bouncer down the leg side. Over bowled. In theory five remain tonight.

  11. Postpublished at 18:51 BST 16 May

    Gloucs 154 & 6-2 v Northants 127

Leg side, Cam Bancroft follows it but the leg side catch appeal is turned down.

He didn't touch it. No hat-trick - but an outstanding Harry Conway over regardless.

First ball! Now Harry Conway is on a hat trick!

Ben Charlesworth also edges to Calvin Harrison at second slip and that's a great catch taken low and diving in front of first slip - Ricardo Vasconcelos.

Now the other regular opener and host captain - Cam Bancroft is in.

A long delay caused by conversation between the umpires about the light but we are going to play on.

Straight after the delay Harry Conway gets a breakthrough.

Will Willams edges the ball to Calvin Harrison at slip and here comes Ben Charlesworth - who we thought would open the innings.

  14. Close of play at Tauntonpublished at 18:44 BST 16 May

    Somerset 526-8 dec v Sussex 22-1

That electronic malfunction has ended play five overs and one ball into the Sussex innings.

A horrid day for the visiting team, who remember are into their sixth Championship game inside of seven weeks.

Superb centuries from Tom Abell (third of the season) and Craig Overton (second) took Somerset from a good position to a great one - then host skipper Lewis Gregory got the early breakthrough with the wicket of Tom Haines, pinned LBW in the fifth over.

The forecast is patchy tomorrow. But hopefully the floodlights less so.

  15. Floodlight failure at Tauntonpublished at 18:40 BST 16 May

    Somerset 526-8 dec v Sussex 22-1

The umpires are in a near impossible position...

And as if by magic the floodlights are on - and off again.

This happens twice inside two minutes.

Hopes raised and dashed in the blink of an eye.

Craig Miles sees out the Harry Conway over with a steer to gully and now the spotlight switches to Craig Miles, facing Ben Sanderson.

Will Williams plays a rising delivery awkwardly but safely to short leg.

He subsequently defends on the up down the pitch.

Gone. A horror start for Sussex in a mini session of play where the team has little to gain and plenty to lose.

Jack Carson is in on night watch duty.

    Three slips.

Craig Miles has not looked convincing outside the line of off stump to Ben Sanderson but the fourth ball is leg side and scooped away for one.

An exaggerated stride forward from Will Williams who leaves the ball outside off to see out the over.

    Harry Conway to bowl next.
