Sussex head coach Paul Farbrace has expressed concern about the early-season fixture schedule which has seen his side plays six games in seven weeks.

Speaking at the end of the first day at Taunton, he said: "it the sixth game on the bounce, with the last four having little break in between them, and we are asking the same players to perform day-in, day-out.

“It’s not lack of effort, care or trying. There’s a few tired bodies and the break next week will do the players good.

"We have a few fresh ones to come into our T20 side and will be able to give our bowlers some rest."

Some of that may be due to when England make Root and Brook available - and when they don't.

It's another good day for Yorkshire's Jess Jonassen who is 110 not out in their 209-6 after 43 overs against Warwickshire at Scarborough.

Durham are 206-5 in the 41st over against Somerset after Hollie Armitage made 58 off 83 balls.

Eve Jones made 69 at the top of the order for Lancashire, but they are 179-6 after 40 against Surrey at The Oval.

An entertaining morning session at Headingley and Yorkshire remain in the box seat but they may feel they could have got even more runs on the board, despite ending their innings just 14 runs short of 500.

Jonny Bairstow could only add four more runs to his overnight total before he chipped to Jordan Clark at mid-on for 120 while Adam Lyth was dismissed for 141 off the bowling of Clark.

George Hill played nicely for his 34 and Dom Bess was bowled when attempting to reverse-sweep Dan Lawrence for 42.

Dan Worrall bowled determinedly and Matthew Fisher picked up 4-92 on his return to Headingley but Yorkshire will be more than happy with their efforts after being put into bat by Surrey skipper Rory Burns.

An intriguing morning session has taken place at Southampton, where Hampshire managed to pass 200 at the end of their innings, thanks largely to the contribution of 55 from the bat of Felix Organ.

In response, Nottinghamshire have found runs largely hard to come by and were 6-1 after nine overs, following the early wicket of Haseeb Hameed who was clean bowled by Kyle Abbott.

Ben Slater did strike three consecutive boundaries from the bowling of Brad Wheal in the final over before lunch to set up an interesting afternoon session in front of us.

Jhye Richardson attempts to hoick Jordan Clark over the boundary for six but is caught behind square leg by Matthew Fisher - who had a long time to think about it before grabbing well.

Fisher ends with 4-92 but it is undoubtedly Yorkshire who are in the box seat and lunch will now be taken.

A frustrating morning at Taunton with three breaks for rain and only 10 overs bowled.

However, in that time Somerset have added 59 runs to virtually guarantee a fourth batting bonus point, the charge headed by Craig Overton, including a hooked six off the pacey Henry Crocombe

Tom Abell - who is 96 - has moved serenely towards his century which has looked almost inevitable from the moment he walked to the crease and would be his third hundred of the season

It has been Derbyshire's morning, of that there is no doubt.

Although Nick Potts was removed, Ben Aitchison (64*) and Wayne Madsen (41*) are two runs shy of a century partnership, and Middlesex have struggled to suppress the flow of runs.

The lead is 51 runs and the pitch looks a good one for batting on.

Craig Miles is into the second over of his first spell and bowls a wide to Saif Zaib.

A leg side ball is flicked behind square for one. Procter tries to smack a wide ball through point but misses.

He gets a single pushed through cover off the back foot to keep the strike.

We should have time for at least one more over before lunch.

When Kent lost three wickets for four runs at the start of play - including Ben Dawkins, who failed to add to his overnight 180 - it looked unlikely they would still be batting at lunch.

But with the ball getting softer, Ekansh Singh and Keith Dudgeon put together a stand of 108, with Singh taking a single to mid-on off Callum Parkinson to reach 50 of 77 balls.

They were parted, though, on the stroke of lunch as Dudgeon, on 44, spliced a Matthew Potts bouncer to the keeper - Potts now has 4-79.

Nightwatchman Jamie Porter pushes away Ajaz Patel's final ball of the morning as he bats through the entire session at Chelmsford for an unbeaten 36, the highest score of his career.

The day did not begin well for Essex, who lost three wickets for 19 runs after resuming on 10-1, including skipper Tom Westley, who was caught behind down the leg-side for two.

But Porter and Charlie Allison - who has 42 - have so far added 59 for the fifth wicket to steady the innings and give their side hope of getting within striking distance of Leicestershire's first-innings total.
