A good positive start from England. This ball is 73 overs old and there are no demons in this wicket. England have started well with a good positive approach, and they're looking to score.

Ben Stokes has started well this morning and times another drive superbly through the covers for four.

Some excellent work from Mitchell Starc on the boundary denies him another four with a late cut.

He has to settle for two and adds two more with a leg-side flick to end the Scott Boland over.

Jofra Archer didn't try and overhit it. That didn't clear the rope, that cleared the fence into the crowd.

That's a huge hit from Jofra Archer!

Tossed up by Nathan Lyon and the England number 10 gets his front foot out of the way and launches the ball high and handsome over long on for six.

So much for England not rushing before the new ball...

It feels a bit more humid out there. With the new ball will it move around a little bit?

We will see when the sun comes out what this humidity is going to do.

That Ben Stokes single was the only run from the over with Alex Carey up to the stumps to stop the England left-hander walking at Scott Boland.

Nine overs until the new ball but the tourists are not rushing, they look like they are just go to try and continue in the same manner as yesterday evening.

Ben Stokes goes to his 37th Test fifty with a single dabbed to backward point.

A gritty, crucial innings from the England skipper to try and keep his side in this game - and the series.

A 159-ball half-century is his slowest in Tests. The previous slowest? Headingley in 2019...

Ben Stokes has faced 377 deliveries in this Ashes - the most of all batters across both teams.

Stokes has faced 22% of all deliveries faced by England batters in the first Test matches so far.

The last time an English batter faced as many deliveries and scored at a slower strike-rate were Alex Lees (ENG IN WI, 2022) & Jos Buttler (Ashes in Australia, 2021-22).

That was a good shot from Ben Stokes. Alex Carey is right up behind the stumps now!

Jofra Archer looks handy. He has a solid defence and he doesn't mind hitting the long ball.

    Gorgeous shot from Ben Stokes.

After blocking a couple, the England skipper walks at Scott Boland and drills a drive through extra cover for four.

That takes him to 49 and brings up the fifty partnership for the ninth wicket.

I think English cricket has been a happier place and a better place when they have been in charge.

There is optimism and people are coming into the grounds with excitement.

I want to still see Baz [Brendon McCullum] at the helm.

  20. 'For us, it is rinse and repeat'published at 23:27 GMT 18 December 2025

Australia's Marnus Labuschagne, speaking to TNT Sports: "You take it day by day. We had a good day yesterday, taking eight wickets and keeping the runs down. For us, it is rinse and repeat.

"I think there is certain individuals who play their way. Their top order plays with a high tempo; Duckett, Crawley and Pope. Even Root and Brook score quickly and obviously Stokes locked it down yesterday and played it that way.

"It seems like there has been a shift at different times from their method. For us, it is trying to be adaptable and read how they're trying to play."

On his banter towards England's batters: "Usually Smudge [Steve Smith] is fielding at first slip, and I'm far enough away from the cameras that when I talk dribble that nobody hears, and it is just for the boys.

"All I'm trying to do is create some energy out there. It can be tricky with the crowd there. I try to create a little banter for the boys."
