Ben Stokes looks pumped as he addresses his charges on the edge of the field.

He finishes with some powerful clapping - if there was a soft fruit in between those hands it would be spattered all over the England line-up.

Australia will resume on 17-1 after five overs, with Travis Head on five and Marnus Labuschagne on four.

Meanwhile Brydon Carse will continue his opening spell, having already dismissed Australia opener Jake Weatherald.

Brydon Carse was sharp in that short two-over spell before lunch. The right-arm quick induced a false shot off a third of his deliveries.

He kept the lines tight, making the batters play 10 of the 12 deliveries and bowled 50% of the deliveries on good length.

This England team love chasing, but they have to bowl well.

They need to knock Australia over with less than a 300-lead to have any chance.

That's a shocker from Jake Weatherald. It looked like it pitched in a different postcode. A more experienced opener reviews that.

If England are to launch an epic comeback then this wasn't a bad way to start it.

Brydon Carse trapped Jake Weatherald in front of his stumps - but the Australia opener should have reviewed, with the ball pitching outside the line.

    Thanks Sam.

    Comeback on? Why not, eh?

To borrow from Blackadder's General Melchett, if nothing else works, a total pig-headed unwillingness to look facts in the face will see us through.

It didn't seem like when the eighth wicket went down yesterday but England are still just about in this game at lunch on day three.

They still need to put in a very good bowling display this afternoon to keep it that way but all hope is not yet lost.

Is the comeback on? Mike Peter is here to take you through the afternoon session as we wait to find out.

I am happy to give that session to England. They go to lunch with one wicket in the can - they will be happy with how the morning session went.

It has given the English fans a little bit of hope.

    Lead by 102

Ben Stokes has a leg slip and a leg gully in place as Jofra Archer bowls to Marnus Labuschagne.

But neither come into the game as the Australian defends solidly to get through to the lunch break.

Very good session for England, adding another 73 runs with the bat and then taking an early wicket in Australia's second innings.

The hosts are still ahead in the game, leading by 102, but the tourists still have hope, which given how things looked for much of yesterday is more than could have been expected.

What would be a plausible target for England to chase? 320? That would mean needing to bowl Australia out for around 220-240.

Brydon Carse is pitching it up a bit more, he was criticised in that first innings for bowling it a bit too short.

Marnus Labuschagne always has far too much energy.

Much better second over from Jofra Archer and his pace is creeping back up again as well.

The one time he does overpitch, an excellent diving stop from Ollie Pope in the covers denies Marnus Labuschagne even a single.

That’s a shocker. Surely the batter saw where that pitched? And Travis Head? About time a bit of luck with an umpire decision.

Wow. Whenever there's a sniff of outside leg, you should review. Complacency from the Australians? They haven't won yet.

Very good first over from Brydon Carse and there's another appeal for lbw to end the over.

Marnus Labuschagne was across his stumps but that looked to be sliding down leg.

England think so, too. No review.

Again, Jake Weatherald falls lbw. I wonder if that is where England are targeting. Just the start that England needed. It pitched well outside leg...

The openers like reviewing it even if it is dead.

The first wicket down and a bit of controversy.

Big error! That pitched outside leg and it's a bonus wicket for England.
