Scottie Scheffler burst into the upper echelons of the golfing world last year with an astonishing run, but incredibly he’s managed to maintain his consistency recently, with a sparkling run in his last eight events.

Starting with a win at the Phoenix Open to retain his title there, and going on to add the coveted Players Championship – he’s finished no lower than 12th and his last eight results read: Won-12-4-Won-4-10-11-5.

In such a competitive sport where anything can happen, that’s some golfing.

    Hovland -5, Suh -3

The first of our co-leaders is under way - and Viktor Hovland drills his opening tee shot right down the fairway. Nerve-settling start for the Norwegian.

Unheralded American Justin Suh is even straighter down the middle as the fans shout 'oooooooh' - I imagine because it rhymes with Suh.

Good start for the penultimate group.

    DeChambeau -3, Koepka -2 (19:30 BST)

Brooks Koepka has discovered his ball and gouges towards the green from the rough.

He hopes for a kick but doesn’t get it on the sodden Oak Hill turf so will take his third shot just shy of the green.

No such trouble for Bryson DeChambeau who takes aim from the centre of the first fairway and pings his approach to about 35 feet.

  4. Viktor to live up to his name?published at 19:40 BST 20 May 2023

    Hovland -5 (19:40 BST)

Viktor Hovland has been in contention going into the weekend at the past two majors.

The Norwegian was in the final pairing at The Open at St Andrew's last year but never caught fire on Sunday and ended up tied fourth as Cameron Smith came through.

He followed that up with another top-10 finish - tied for seventh - at the Masters in Augusta.

Is it third time lucky for the 25-year-old over the next 36 hours?

The 25-year-old California native is making his US PGA Championship debut - and he's out in the penultimate group on Saturday. Talk about the stuff of dreams.

He is one of an elite group of golfers to have qualified for the USGA Junior Amateur tournament on four occasions - Jordan Spieth and Tiger Woods are among the few others to boast that accolade so decent company to be in.

Suh has overcome a serious tendonitis problem in his left wrist to finish in the top 10 at both the Honda Classic and Players Championship in his maiden year on the PGA Tour.

And rounds of 69 and 68 have thrust him right into the picture at the top of the leaderboard at Oak Hill.

    Rose -1, Block +1 (1)

Another tee shot... another fairway missed for Justin Rose. He's actually only hit 7 out of 30 this week so far!

The scrambling has been sublime though. However, the 2013 US Open champion is not reaching the green in two, his ball pulling up well short, but on the fairway at least.

Michael Block goes fairway, green. He'll have a 25-footer for birdie.

  7. And boos for Brookspublished at 19:35 BST 20 May 2023

    DeChambeau -3, Koepka -2 (19:30 BST)

Oh they're booing Brooks Koepka now.

A few too many beers trying to stay dry for a couple of the punters perhaps.

He takes his time coming out from under his umbrella, lines up his tee shot and drills it away.

Not as accurate from Koepka though and he's found the thick stuff out right.

  8. Boos for Brysonpublished at 19:33 BST 20 May 2023

    DeChambeau -3, Koepka -2 (19:30 BST)

A few boos from the punters as Bryson DeChambeau's name is announced and again as he moves to take his tee shot.

Trying to get the pantomime villain thing going again?

Whatever the rationale, seems pretty uncalled for.

Must have felt satisfying for him to smash it clean down the fairway.

  9. McIlroy birdies the thirdpublished at 19:32 BST 20 May 2023

Rory McIlroy, is going all 1980s today with his baseball cap facing backwards, but who cares.

He rattles his putt into the back of the cup and picks up a well-deserved birdie.

That's an absolute belter from Rory McIlroy over on the 206-yard par three. The Northern Irishman takes a mid iron and zips his ball into six feet.

Shane Lowry puts a bit more juice on his and sees his ball scoot on 30 feet past. A tough return putt down the slope incoming.

Not that you'd know it, Lowry gives it the slightest of taps and sees his ball trickle down towards the hole and lip out. Still a comfy par.

    Now what can McIlroy do?

    DeChambeau -3, Koepka -2 (19:30 BST)

There may not be fireworks between the players – but there ought to be some smoke off the tee.

Bryson DeChambeau boasts the longest driving average this week (335 yards) while Brooks Koepka is just behind in third (331 yards).

In fact, DeChambeau’s exploits off the tee are a major reason why he’s contending this week – top for driving accuracy and second in strokes gained tee-to-green.

Let’s see how he handles the weather.

  12. Postpublished at 19:26 BST 20 May 2023

    Rose -1, Block +1 (1)

A huge blow out of the rough, water droplets jumping in the air, as Justin Rose sends his second shot on the first towards the green. His ball creeps on the front edge.

Michael Block was unable to reach with his approach and makes a bit of a hash of his third, leaving his 30-yard chip 20-feet shot. Two putts from there. Bogey start.

Rose lags his putt from 35 feet to six inches. Par.

  13. Together againpublished at 19:25 BST 20 May 2023

    DeChambeau -3, Koepka -2 (19:30 BST)

The controversial pairing we all wanted to see…back in 2021.

Back then, Brooks Koepka made no secret of his disdain for Bryson DeChambeau and his experiments. A classic rivalry was set.

    And then it faded.

They hugged to celebrate a Ryder Cup win in September 2021 then cashed in on their rivalry by playing ‘The Match’ against each other two months later (pictured below).

Koepka thrashed him by the way.

Since then, they’ve both joined LIV Golf and face each other regularly on that tour.

Yet, it's still the first time paired at a major and both are within touching distance of the lead.

If they can handle the conditions – and each other – this duo will make compelling viewing.

  14. Birdie chance for DJpublished at 19:23 BST 20 May 2023

    Johnson +1 (3)

Solid start from Dustin Johnson with three pars and he's given himself a decent chance to climb back into the top 10 with an iron shot to within 15 feet on the monster 622-yard par-five fourth.

But it slides by to the right and he'll have to make do with a fourth successive par to start his third round.

    McIlroy E, Lowry E (2)

Rory McIlroy's birdie putt was actually from 50 feet away and he judges the pace supremely well to roll up to just three feet before tidying up for a par.

Shane Lowry follows suit. Jon Rahm had already dropped two shots at this stage today.

Jon Rahm has been wet, cold, utterly miserable and particularly grumpy today in a car crash of a front nine.

BUT, he's showing us why he's the world number one as he's hit three back-nine birdies, including one just now on 17, to get it back to six over.

    Great competitor.

    Rose -1, Block E (19:10)

Justin Rose hit two fairways in round two. How will he fare today? It's not the best of starts. Left. Rough.

Huge cheer for Michael Block, who shakes his head and chuckles as he gives his driver a wipe down with a towel. He's left off the tee too.

  18. 100 cuts shows great experiences I've had - Mickelsonpublished at 19:13 BST 20 May 2023

"I love this weather, I think it's fun," a rather soggy Phil Mickelson said on Sky Sports after finishing his third round.

"When I was a kid and it would rain no-one would be at the course and I would go hit balls under this palm tree, and it reminds me of those moments.

"I didn't play great today, didn't score great. But I had a lot of fun. It's a struggle out there but there are some good rounds out there, there are some under par rounds and I think the course is playing very fair.

"Given the conditions, to have conditions we had yesterday and today and to be playable is a sign of what a great design it is."

Mickelson matched the record of five-time winner Jack Nicklaus and two-time champion Raymond Floyd this week and also brought up a century of made cuts in majors.

"This first 100 cuts is the most interesting," he said. 2I think the second 100 cuts is going to be the most interesting part but I guess I didn't know about that streak.

"It's a lot of years, a lot of golf. It's something I'm certainly proud of but it shows my age and it also shows a lot of great experiences that I've had, and I'm very appreciative of that."

    McIlroy E, Lowry E (1)

Both Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry play pretty safe down the second and leave themselves with pretty short irons into the green.

Lowry, whips his in to around 35 feet, while McIlroy's ball spins slightly back and leaves him a 40-foot-plus putt for birdie.

Californian club professional Michael Block was the talk of Oak Hill as the 46-year-old qualifier briefly challenged, then hit a dreaded shank before ending an eventful second round at level par.

A teaching professional who charges $125 for a golf lesson, Block, who has made the cut for the first time on his fifth appearance in the championship, said: "I am having a great time.

"I have no pressure, I have a job and a pay cheque waiting for me at my club. I don't have to make putts to pay for my mortgage. This is a beautiful thing I have here.

"I feel like I've got the game this week to compete. I feel like I could shoot even par out here every day. I feel at the end of the four days that might be a pretty good result."

His reward is to accompany Justin Rose round the course. Rose has had 10 birdies in first two rounds, the third most of any player this week.
