  1. Another shot goes for McIlroypublished at 00:21 BST 8 April 2022

    McIlroy +1, Koepka +1, Fitzpatrick E (16)

It's been a recurring theme today. McIlroy steps up, takes a big swing and almost immediately leans to the left as he nervously watches his ball sail right of his target.

This time, it's left him in the bunker on the 16th, but he plays a beauty of a recovery and gives himself a chance of rescuing a par. Once again, however, his putter fails to behave and he falls to one over.

Fitzpatrick doesn't like his effort, either, and falls short of the ridge.

It trickles back down to three-putt country, but he avoids such a fate and gladly accepts his 14th par of the day.

Koepka also has a testing lag putt, but he negotiates it confidently and taps in for a three.

The final few groups just need to get a wriggle on if they want to finish before the sun goes down in Augusta.

We're not done with round one yet but the BBC TV highlights programme is just getting under way - you can watch along here.

  4. Spieth misses againpublished at 00:15 BST 8 April 2022

    Spieth +1, Schauffele +2, Hovland E (16)

Viktor Hovland converts an easy birdie chance of 16 to get back to level par for the day.

Jordan Spieth has a putt from even closer but yet again his effort is off target and he has to settle for par. That could be his worst miss yet - and there's plenty of competition today!

  5. McIlroy misses again as Fitzpatrick drops backpublished at 00:13 BST 8 April 2022

    McIlroy E, Koepka +1, Fitzpatrick E (15)

No birdie for McIlroy - he grimaces after he taps in for par (his third on the four par-fives today).

It pretty much sums up his day. He's just not quite there with his game, but he's still only five back, so he won't be hitting any panic buttons just yet.

It's a par for Koepka while Fitzpatrick's run of pars is finally ended, but unfortunately with a bogey and that drops him back to level alongside McIlroy.

They need to get a move on here. It's getting dark real fast out there, folks!

  6. Postpublished at 00:11 BST 8 April 2022

    Johnson -3, Morikawa E (17)

A real gut punch for Dustin Johnson as he misses a slippery little putt on 17 to drop a shot.

Morikawa also makes a five, but it's Johnson who will be fuming as they head to the tee on 18.

  7. Postpublished at 00:07 BST 8 April 2022

    McIlroy E, Koepka +1, Fitzpatrick -1 (14)

All three players have taken the water out of play on the lengthened par-five 15th, so it's time for them to demonstrate their wedge skills.

Koepka first. Not great - he comes up about 30 feet shy and doesn't look overly pleased with his effort.

Now it's Fitzpatrick, and that's poor as well as the Englishman's effort is too bold and bounces over the green.

Can McIlroy knock it in close? Hmmm, not quite, but it's the best of an average bunch and he'll have a decent chance at reclaiming the shot he so carelessly threw away on the previous hole.

  8. Watch: 1988 champion Lyle birdies the 18thpublished at 00:04 BST 8 April 2022

Sandy Lyle, famously the first British champion at Augusta in 1988, finished his round in style by chipping in on the 18th.

Brings back memories of Peter Alliss' commentary all those years ago: "This could go, this could go... well, what about that."

    It was a 10-over 82 for 64-year-old Sandy today.

  9. Birdie for Spiethpublished at 00:01 BST 8 April 2022

    Spieth +1, Schauffele +2, Hovland +1 (15)

As the shadows lengthen and sun begins to set at Augusta, Jordan Spieth is still battling hard over his closing holes.

It could be easy just to coast to the finish but these could be important shots if Spieth can pick up another and get to level par by the close.

  10. Postpublished at 23:52 BST 7 April 2022

    Johnson -4, Morikawa E (16)

Dustin Johnson misses his birdie putt on 16 and misses the chance to join Im at the top of the leaderboard, but he's still giving himself chances.

  11. Im holds clubhouse leadpublished at 23:51 BST 7 April 2022

    Im –5 (F)

Im Sung-jae is the clubhouse leader on five under as he pars the last, but almost pulled a birdie out of nowhere with a bunker shot that hit the flag and took a look inside the hole before staying up.

In truth, the ball was moving so it could have shot way beyond the flag, but Im deserved that after a sparkling round of golf.

  12. McIlroy makes careless bogeypublished at 23:49 BST 7 April 2022

    McIlroy E, Koepka +1, Fitzpatrick -1 (14)

Rory's just had a rollercoaster on the 14th. A loose drive leaves him behind a tree down the right, but his second is right out of the top drawer, a wonderfully judged cut around the overhanging branches to 15 feet.

If he drains the putt, it'll be a glorious birdie, but he races the first one past and misses the three-footer on the way back.

    Dear oh dear.

Koepka stops the rot with a par, while Fitzpatrick - yep, you guessed it - also secures his four.

  13. 'Race against time' for final grouppublished at 23:46 BST 7 April 2022

    McIlroy -1, Fitzgerald -1, Koepka +1 (13)

    Iain Carter
Commentator on BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra

It's a race against time now. The sun is starting to set.

Can Rory McIlroy in that final group with Brooks Koepka and Matt Fitzpatrick, get done before darkness?

  14. Postpublished at 23:45 BST 7 April 2022

    Johnson -4, Morikawa E (15)

To the par-three 16th for Dustin Johnson - he's leaning right but that ball lands to the left of the pin, maybe 12 feet away. Another very makeable birdie chance for DJ. Meanwhile, playing partner Collin Morikawa - who has spent most of his round on +2 - has efficiently got it back to level and has his own birdie putt to come.

  15. Watch: Varner III nearly holes out for albatrosspublished at 23:41 BST 7 April 2022

    Varner III -1 (16)

This was simply sensational, and it's given Harold Varner III a timely boost as he's followed that eagle with two birdies to get to one under.

The American's been delighting the patrons on the opening day.

  16. Postpublished at 23:39 BST 7 April 2022

    Im -5 (17)

Im's on the 18th tee. It's a big hit, and he goes straight for his tee, which tells us that it's where he wants it to be, just up the left-hand side of the fairway.

One more good swing and he'll be looking at 67 at the worst.

  17. 'Quite an achievement' - Westwood's 21st Masterspublished at 23:37 BST 7 April 2022

    Westwood E (F)

    Lee WestwoodImage source, Getty Images

Lee Westwood is making his 21st appearance at The Masters, and was talking to Sky Sports:

"Obviously you have a lot of experience when you play 21 Masters, so it gets a little bit easier, you know where to not hit it, so it's just great fun being out there, competing in the Masters. Its a tough tournament to get into, so playing your 21st is quite an achievement."

"Normally I don't have many shots between 90-100 yards, but I had a lot today. It must be getting longer.

    How will he recover?

"Just relax tonight, have a shower, chill out and get some good food and get ready for tomorrow morning. Hopefully the conditions will be a bit calmer and score well if we can."

  18. Im hits 'superb' eagle at 13thpublished at 23:35 BST 7 April 2022

    Im -5 (17)

And here's how Im hit the front, with a superb eagle at the 13th.

  19. Postpublished at 23:34 BST 7 April 2022

    Im -5 (17)

That's just what was needed for Im at the 17, lagging his lengthy birdie putt up to gimme distance.

Cameron Smith and Scottie Scheffler both slipped up at the last, but a closing par will put the South Korean in the clubhouse as the solo leader.

  20. Koepka drops third shot in a rowpublished at 23:32 BST 7 April 2022

    McIlroy -1, Koepka +1, Fitzpatrick -1 (13)

Well, McIlroy saves his par at 13, but he'll be disappointed again after failing to birdie the par-five eighth.

More bad news for Koepka, though. Two under through 10, he's just dropped his third shot in as many holes to slip back to one over, his touch on the greens having deserted him over the last hour or so. Surprising.

Fitzpatrick makes his 12th successive par to stay one under.
