The Spaniard's approach drifts a little right but he tickles in a lovely putt from the fringe to begin in the perfect manner.

You might have heard this will be the first Masters without Phil Mickelson in 28 years.

That's because the three-time champion taking a break from golf after apologising for his criticism of Saudi Arabia's regime.

But the 51-year-old American was not stopped from playing this year's Masters because of his controversial comments surrounding the breakaway Saudi super league, says Augusta chairman Fred Ridley.

"We did not disinvite Phil," said Ridley. "He made a personal decision and I don't know anything beyond that."

  4. 'I've learned more from the lows than the highs'published at 13:38 BST 7 April 2022

As far as Masters debuts go, it couldn't have been much more memorable.

Scotland's Robert MacIntyre tied for 12th at Augusta last year and made more birdies during the week than any other player.

A few months later, he claimed a share of eighth at The Open and maintained his record of making the cut in every major he has played.

However, he has since dropped out of the world's top 50 - to 73rd - and failed in his bid for a PGA Tour card.

But the 25-year-old from Oban says he "learned more from the lows" in a rollercoaster 2021 and is a "completely different" golfer as he returns to the Masters 12 months on.

"I've come on so much," MacIntyre told BBC Scotland. "As a person, I wouldn't say I've changed much, but as a golfer I feel completely different.

"I know the direction I'm trying to go in. There's so much that people don't see from highs and lows.

"In the last year, I've learned more from the lows than the highs and it makes you realise what's good for you and what's bad for you."

  5. Are any other UK players likely to contend?published at 13:31 BST 7 April 2022

    Matt FitzpatrickImage source, Getty Images

England's Matt Fitzpatrick plays with Rory McIlroy in the opening two rounds, with the pair among 10 UK players set to tee off at Augusta.

Fitzpatrick, 27, comes into the Masters on the back of top-10 finishes in four of his last five PGA Tour strokeplay events

Tyrrell Hatton is the highest-ranked Englishman at 16th in the world, regaining the consistency which deserted him in 2021 with five top-10 finishes in his eight events this year.

England's Paul Casey, 44, finished third in last month's Players Championship and has a good record at Augusta with three top-six finishes and just one missed cut in the past seven years, while fellow veterans Lee Westwood, 48, and Justin Rose, 41, are hoping to belie their advancing years and less-than-vintage form with a renaissance on a course where they have both finished second.

After sinking more birdies than anyone else in the field on his Masters debut last year, Scotland's Robert MacIntyre returns to Augusta looking to build on his steady recent form and improve on last year's 12th-place finish.

England's Danny Willett and Scottish veteran Sandy Lyle play by using their lifetime invitations as former champions, while English amateur Laird Shepherd qualified to make his debut after producing an amazing comeback to win the Amateur Championship.

  6. Could it finally be McIlroy's year?published at 13:28 BST 7 April 2022

It feels like we write about this every year....well since 2014.

But Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy goes into the Masters hoping to complete the career Grand Slam of winning golf's four major championships.

However, he will need to overcome an Augusta National layout that has seen him contend on several occasions before being hampered by one poor round.

In 2011 McIlroy started the final round with a four-shot lead but collapsed on the back nine ending up in a tie for 15th.

While he finished fourth in 2015, he was a distant six strokes adrift of the winner Jordan Spieth and he has been unable to get any closer since as he looks to join Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Tiger Woods as the only players to achieve the career Grand Slam.

    Iain Carter
    BBC golf correspondent at Augusta

Just by turning up to practice. Just by generating hope that he will tee it up at the Masters this Thursday, Tiger Woods has sent a massive bolt of energy through the game of golf.

Not that it was languishing in some kind of moribund torpor, in need of a wake up jolt. Anything but.

Rarely have we gone into the first men's major of the year with more exciting young talent at the top of the sport, but this astonishing 46-year-old has always been a game changer.

Woods' presence at Augusta this week, his attempt to come back from a potentially life-threatening car crash which nearly cost him his right leg, is the stuff of sporting legend.

The Masters 2022 - Woods still thinks he can win

It's been impossible to ignore the planet's most popular player. Packed galleries during Monday's practice rounds provided a celebratory atmosphere as the patrons welcomed Tiger Woods back to Augusta National.

The five-time champion feared his leg would have to be amputated following his high-speed car crash in Los Angeles in February 2021, but this week he returned to the course which has seen some of his greatest moments in a stellar career amid jubilant scenes.

On Tuesday, he confirmed he planned to play in the Masters and compete in a top-level event for the first time since his last appearance at Augusta in November 2020.

Asked if he thought he could win a 16th major title this week, Woods simply replied: "I do."

The start of play has been delayed due to bad weather.

Thunderstorms which forced Wednesday's par-three contest to be abandoned continued through the evening and overnight in Augusta.

So given those circumstances tournament officials announced that the first pairing of two-time Masters champion Jose Maria Olazabal and JJ Spaun would start at 13:30 BST instead of at 13:00.
