  1. Postpublished at 21:13 BST 7 April 2022

    Spieth E, Schauffele +1, Hovland +1 (6)

Viktor Hovland drops a shot this time in this star-studded group that is just struggling to get anything going between them so far on the front nine.

Spieth again just cannot get his putt to drop as another birdie chance goes begging.

  2. Fore left!published at 21:10 BST 7 April 2022

    Woods -1, Oosthuizen +3, Niemann -3 (17)

Uh, that's not what Woods wanted off the final tee box, as he sets up for a fade down the left but bangs it straight and even further left deep into the trees.

Could be a very tricky spot to make par from in there.

  3. Smith struggling at the lastpublished at 21:09 BST 7 April 2022

    DeChambeau +3, Smith -6 (17)

Smith punches out from behind the trees up the last. It's a wedge for his third, but it's short!

It spins back down the green to 46 feet away and a two-putt bogey is not a given from there.

The Australian has been sensational today, but he's in danger of undoing a lot of his good work at the last.

  4. Postpublished at 21:03 BST 7 April 2022

    Finau E, Scheffler -3, Scott +2 (15)

Another birdie putt goes begging for Scheffler, this time at the par-five 15th.

He keeps giving himself chances, though, which is a good sign. One more birdie over his last three and he'll be in great shape for tomorrow.

  5. Pars all round - one more hole for Tigerpublished at 21:03 BST 7 April 2022

    Woods -1, Oosthuizen +3, Niemann -3 (17)

Woods puts a lovely roll on his birdie putt but it just fails to turn at the end and rolls by, so he has to settle for par.

Niemann also just misses out with his birdie putt as well as all three in this group make four.

One more hole to go for Tiger!

  6. Johnson & Rahm make steady startspublished at 21:02 BST 7 April 2022

    Johnson -1 (6), Morikawa +1 (6), Rahm +1 (6)

Nothing spectacular, good or bad, for recent major champions Jon Rahm, Dustin Johnson and Collin Morikawa so far.

DJ, the 2020 Augusta winner, is one under through six while playing partner Collin Morikawa is +1.

Spaniard Rahm, the 2021 US Open champion, has just bogeyed the sixth to fall to +1.

  7. Postpublished at 21:00 BST 7 April 2022

    DeChambeau +3, Smith -6 (17)

Smith has reached the 18th. Ooooh, he loses it right and may well have tree trouble.

He started with a double. Surely he won't finish with one too, will he?

  8. Im turns in 32published at 20:58 BST 7 April 2022

    Im -4 (9)

Im Sung-jae finishes his back nine off with a nice chip to save par and turn in four under and just two behind sparkling leader Cameron Smith.

Funnily enough, Smith and Im tied for second place in the 2020 Masters behind Dustin Johnson so have previous for being at the top of the famous Augusta leaderboards.

  9. Postpublished at 20:57 BST 7 April 2022

    McIlroy -1, Koepka E, Fitzpatrick -1 (5)

McIlroy, from the centre of the fifth fairway, pushes a short iron out to the right.

He doesn't look too thrilled with that one, but he still escapes with a par.

Fitzpatrick and Koepka take their fours and move on, too. Koepka's started with five straight pars but, as we've seen in majors over the last five years, this guy almost always stays in the equation.

  10. Willett shoots 69published at 20:55 BST 7 April 2022

    Willett -3 (F)

That's a lovely first round from 2016 champion Danny Willett, who puts his experience to good use by compiling a solid start in tricky conditions mostly.

  11. Smith six under with one to gopublished at 20:52 BST 7 April 2022

    DeChambeau +3, Smith -6 (17)

BREAKING NEWS: Smith misses a putt.

He borrows too much with his birdie try at the 17th and it's just a par.

Four at the last for 66 which, given he started with a double, would be a remarkable effort.

  12. Postpublished at 20:50 BST 7 April 2022

    Woods -1, Oosthuizen +3, Niemann -3 (16)

Oh this is wonderful stuff now as the crowd are bang up for this as Tiger tees off on 17, and it almost feels like it's the 17th tee on Sunday with Woods holding a one-shot lead.

Many people complain about too much coverage of Woods, but scenes like these help to explain why, he's just box office!

  13. Postpublished at 20:49 BST 7 April 2022

    DeChambeau +3, Smith -6 (16)

Smith, firing on all cylinders, is safely onboard the 17th green and will have a chance to secure his ninth (!) birdie of an increasingly sublime opening round.

  14. Postpublished at 20:49 BST 7 April 2022

    Spieth E, Schauffele +1, Hovland E (5)

Spieth is playing some wonderful golf, until he gets the putter in his hands as he lets a great birdie chance go begging.

Schauffele goes even worse by three-putting for a bogey.

  15. Postpublished at 20:48 BST 7 April 2022

    MacIntyre +2 (11)

Bad news for Bob MacIntyre as he finds the drink at the 11th and slumps to a double bogey.

Three shots gone in the last two holes. Expensive.

  16. Postpublished at 20:47 BST 7 April 2022

    McIlroy -1, Koepka E, Fitzpatrick -1 (4)

    McIlroy's a dangerous man when he's finding his driver's sweet-spot.

He's just done it again, sending a 355-yarder screaming down the fifth. That'll be a wedge from there.

Rory in full flow's a joy to watch.

  17. 'Just sensational'published at 20:46 BST 7 April 2022

    Woods -1 (16)

    Trish Johnson
Eight-time member of the Team Europe Solheim Cup team

We just head an enormous roar and we just said 'it's got to be Tiger!'

    It's just sensational.

  18. 'An explosion of arms and cheering!'published at 20:46 BST 7 April 2022

    Woods -1 (16)

    Alistair Bruce-Ball
Commentator on BBC Radio 5 Live

Woods putting for birdie - he staring at it - and it's in.

An explosion of arms and cheering. He's giving them something to treasure and he stomps off with his putter raised in the air.

  19. The Tiger roar returns!published at 20:46 BST 7 April 2022

    Woods -1, Oosthuizen +3, Niemann -3 (16)

Woods sends the patrons around the 16th green wild as he drains a bomb from downtown to claim a birdie two to get back into the red.

Some of these patrons will have been waiting hours to get a glimpse of the big cat, and he's rewarded them with a putt that brought about a Tiger roar of old.

We've been entertained by Tiger on the 16th before of course....

  20. Postpublished at 20:43 BST 7 April 2022

    Finau +1, Scheffler -3, Scott +2 (14)

What?! How did that stay out??

Scheffler's birdie putt looks destined to drop at the 14th, but it somehow dies to the right at the end.

Agonisingly close, but on he goes, still bogey-free.

There's a welcome birdie for Scott, too! His first gain since the second gets him back to two over.
