Rose +3 (14)
It's been a bit of an up-and-down spell for Justin Rose, who went out to five over after back-to-back bogeys before dragging things back with successive birdies.
McIlroy E, Koepka -1, Fitzpatrick -1 (8)
Koepka has had to be patient, but he cards his first birdie of the week with a stress-free four at the par-five eighth.
Remember, the four-time major winner ran Tiger close in 2019, so he has unfinished business here.
Can McIlroy follow him in? No, he can't, as he fails to convert a five-footer for birdie. That'll feel like a drop shot to him, especially after another booming drive.
No birdie for Fitzpatrick, either, who stays at one under.
Finau -1, Scheffler -3, Scott +1 (F)
Ah, that's a shame. Scottie Scheffler has been a joy to watch today, but he can't avoid a bogey - his first of the tournament - at the last.
It drops him back to three under, but despite his stuttering finish, he'll be thoroughly satisfied with his day's work.
The world number one's well in the mix.
Tony Finau has not brought his best stuff but still manages to grind out a one-under 71, but it's a disappointing bogey at the last for Adam Scott, who shoots 74.
Johnson -4, Morikawa +2 (10)
Dustin Johnson has been steadily progressing up the leaderboard to the point where he has reached -3, one off the lead shared by Cameron Smith and Scottie Scheffler.
He's just started his back nine and his second on the 10th pulled up on the fringe at the front of the green.
Not exactly threatening a birdie you'd think. Not so - Johnson rolls that in confidently to join Smith and Scheffler on -4. The 2020 champ is looking goog.
It's not going so well for playing partner Collin Morikawa who's dropped to +2.
Meanwhile, defending champion Hideki Matsuyama has not long completed his opening round - it's a steady-as-she-goes 72 for the Japanese player.

Back-to-back bogeys for Jordan Spieth and seven and eight as his round just starts to come apart a bit heading for the turn.
Schauffele and Hovland are still plodding around but with nothing much happening.
Finau -1, Scheffler -4, Scott +1 (17)
Right, here we go. Scheffler has taken his time over this chip.
He backs away from it twice before finally putting clubface to ball. It's a misjudgement, though, and he leaves it well short.
He'll have a testing putt left for his par and an opening 68.
Finau -1, Scheffler -4, Scott +1 (17)
Oh no. Scheffler's a long way back for his second into 18, and he turns it over. It takes a firm bounce and heads for the patrons.
Plenty of work left from there.
Woods -1, Oosthuizen +3, Niemann -3 (F)
Image source, Getty ImagesWell folks, we're not going over the top when we say that's one of the greatest rounds of golf in Masters history that Tiger Woods has just produced.
The eyes of the world are on him, he's not played a competitive round of golf since November 2020, oh and yes there's the smaller matter of being involved in a dreadful car accident.
His leg was severely damaged, almost beyond repair, and he's spent months just getting strong enough to walk again, let alone play golf.
And yet, he's come back, gone straight into the white hot pressure of a major at Augusta, and he's looked pretty serene all the way around when shooting one under par.
Just teeing it up here was a remarkable achievement, shooting 71 is almost beyond belief, could he yet go on and win the thing!?
McIlroy E, Koepka E, Fitzpatrick -1 (7)
McIlroy can't quite get the shot he dropped at the sixth back at the first time of asking, running his birdie try past.
A par at the difficult par-four is no bad thing, though, and he has the par-five in his sights.
More steady play from Fitzpatrick and Koepka, both of whom match McIlroy's par.
A birdie and six pars for Fitzpatrick so far. The seven-time DP World Tour winner is looking good.

If you ever doubted Tiger Woods and his resilience, well you shouldn't.
14 months on from that horrific car crash and almost losing his right leg, he's back competing at the Masters and he's doing it in style.
A tumultuous achievement on the first day. He's marching with purpose and a huge smile on his face.

Tiger will be delighted with that round. I have no doubt in his mind that he believes he can win.
Finau -1, Scheffler -4, Scott +1 (17)
Scottie! The world number one drains his birdie putt at the 17th and grabs a share of the lead with Cameron Smith.
Finau cards a three at the penultimate hole, too, and gets into the red at one under, with Scott still at one over.
Smith stumbled at the last, but can Scheffler navigate his way to a stress-free par and match the Australian's 68?
Woods -1, Oosthuizen +3, Niemann -3 (F)
Woods makes his par putt, and the roar is only a few decibels lower than if it was for the tournament itself!
After 508 days away from competitive golf, a horrific car crash and almost losing his leg, that one under par round of 71 is an incredible achievement.
A word for Joaquin Niemann as well who played superbly under the circumstances to shoot 69 and sit just one off the lead.
Finau E, Scott +1, Scheffler -3 (16)
This has been a thoroughly impressive round from Scheffler.
Still without a blemish on his card, he drills a drive down the 17th and clips his 158-yard approach pin high, just 13 feet away.
Yet another decent look at birdie. He'll tie Smith for the lead if he makes it...

Doubles the first, doubles the end with eight birdies in the middle? Smith will be absolutely gutted.
Woods -1, Oosthuizen +3, Niemann -3 (17)
It's a wonderful wedge in from Woods, that takes one bounce, a hop and a skip before the spin activates and it sits and starts to make its way over to the hole.
The patrons rise as Woods strides onto the final green and he gets a deserved standing ovation. Regardless of where this putt goes this has been some effort.
DeChambeau +4, Smith -4 (F)
Ouch. Cameron Smith started his round with a double bogey and proceeded to play the next 16 holes in eight under with some sparkling play thrown in there.
But he'll have a bitter taste in his mouth after a double at the last. The drive was to blame there, but his putter evaded him too, his bogey effort slipping past on the right.
It's still a good round for the Players champion, though, and he'll expect to come out firing tomorrow.
As for Bryson DeChambeau, who once claimed Augusta plays like a par 67 for him given his gargantuan length off the tee, will sign for a 76. Oof.
Woods -1, Oosthuizen +3, Niemann -3 (17)
Nice break for Tiger as his ball looks to have bounced back out of the trees and just into the semi rough.
Nothing fancy this time around though as Woods rightly decides to just hit a lay-up and try and get up-and-down from short and left of the green.
McIlroy E, Koepka E, Fitzpatrick -1 (6)
McIlroy stumbles for the first time.
The Northern Irishman comes up short at the par-three sixth and, having zoomed his first putt well past the hole, he misses the one coming back.
That's frustrating.
DeChambeau +3, Smith -6 (17)
Steady!
Smith races his par putt past and still has around six or seven feet for his bogey.
Bit of an ugly finish, this.
