  1. Another par for Woodspublished at 16:43 BST 7 April 2022

    Woods E, Oosthuizen E, Niemann +1 (2)

Woods crouches down as far as he can to line up his birdie putt... nice length... does it have the line? Not quite.

A par-par start will more than do.

That's what Oosthuizen settles for too, saving par with an awkward chip back from behind the flag.

Can Niemann pull back that dropped shot on the first and keep pace with his brethren? Nope. Tiger's putt didn't waver from its line on the left, Niemann's effort drifts right.

    Finau E, Scheffler E, Scott E (1)

Adam Scott drills his approach into the heart of the first green and has a decent look at an opening birdie, but it slips past on the left.

Scottie Scheffler did indeed find the bunker. He clips it out nicely, but it hangs up on the fringe just off the right of the green. That'll be an awkward two-putt, but he manages it and it's a steady start.

Tony Finau's also off the right but plays a lovely chip and drains the par putt.

Imagine having such a tidy short game...

Tiger Woods' execution on the second has gone to plan, so far.

Now, with the flag in the far left corner and the green invitingly open, control with the wedge is key.

Flighted in, the ball bounces on the middle of the green and saunters towards the hole.

"Conservative," is Butch Harmon's succinct analysis.

  4. Lowry almost lands an acepublished at 16:37 BST 7 April 2022

    Lowry +1 (3)

Shane Lowry almost drained a slam dunk hole-in-one at the fourth as he rattled the flag stick with his tee shot but the ball refused to drop into the cup - instead bouncing well away from the hole.

It should be no surprise should it as Lowry is making a name for himself for getting high-profile aces. He's made a hole-in-one at the 16th here at Augusta and also made one at the famous 17th at Sawgrass last month.

  5. Scrambling parspublished at 16:36 BST 7 April 2022

    DeChambeau E, Smith +2 (2)

Cameron Smith's erratic start to the Masters continues on the second. In the fairway bunker off the tee, his ball clips the front of the trap on the way out, leaving him a long third.

He overshoots the green and then chips his fourth shot a dozen feet past the hole. Huge par putt and the Australian makes it.

Bryson DeChambeau also escapes with par after hoicking his tee shot into the woods down the left.

Woods level, Oosthuizen level, Niemann +1 (1)

Joaquin Niemann, by the way, absolutely knocks the socks off the ball.

With the driver in his hand, he goes through it with the speed of a freight train.

Woods, using the same wood as off the tee, clips his second to short of the bunker on the right.

Oosthuizen short on the left with a tricky chip over the bunker, while Niemann is between them at the bottom of the fringe.

  7. Singh strugglingpublished at 16:30 BST 7 April 2022

    Singh +6 (7)

2000 Masters champion Vijay Singh is finding it hard work at the moment as he sits dead last on six over after going bogey, bogey, bogey, double bogey.

He was in position 'A' on the seventh but came up short of the green, then chipped into the bunker! He almost holed out from the sand, then missed the putt coming back.

    Finau, Scheffler, Scott (16:26 BST)

Adam Scott, one of the sweetest swingers the game's ever seen, splits the fairway at the first. Jon done.

World number one Scottie Scheffler next. He's leaning...and it may have ended up in the bunker down the right.

Tony Finau possesses a serious amount of power, but his opening drive heads down the left. Battling for par already.

  9. Postpublished at 16:29 BST 7 April 2022

Woods level, Oosthuizen level, Niemann +1 (1)

The honour remains with Tiger Woods. He's made to wait because of traffic up ahead, then knocks a wood down the middle, just short of the bunker on the right of the dogleg.

  10. Can Scheffler continue his remarkable run?published at 16:25 BST 7 April 2022

    Finau, Scheffler, Scott (16:26 BST)

What a couple of months it's been for Scottie Scheffler.

In fact, just 42 days after winning his first PGA Tour title at the Phoenix Open, the 25-year-old found himself at the top of the world rankings after wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play.

Scheffler has the distinction of being the only player to reach the summit in the same year as his maiden tour win.

He is grouped with fellow US Ryder Cup star Tony Finau and 2013 Masters winner Adam Scott for the first two rounds.

Should be a fun group to follow.

  11. Early birdie for Fleetwoodpublished at 16:25 BST 7 April 2022

    Fleetwood -1 (2)

Tommy Fleetwood reaches the par-five second green in two after a couple of fine blows.

The flag is tucked away on the left, behind a bunker and on a tiny portion of what is a huge green. The sensible play is to the centre of the green, but the slope takes the ball further away from the cup.

    A dilemma.

Tommy's ball does indeed find the centre of the green and holds tight, to leave him a 45-footer for eagle. A big bunt up the hill is tracking well... a two-footer for birdie and the Englishman is one of eight setting the (very) early pace.

Here's what is next for Messrs Woods, Oosthuizen and Niemann.

The second hole is a dogleg left which may be reachable in two, well for the chaps in this field anyway particularly given the drop in elevation.

Large, deep greenside bunkers mean you have to take quite a bit of care with that second shot mind.

Originally, the green was guarded by a lone bunker on the right but that bunker was reduced in size in 1966, and a left bunker was added in 1946.

  13. Woods pars the firstpublished at 16:21 BST 7 April 2022

Woods level, Oosthuizen level, Niemann +1 (1)

We've watched this scene thousands of times over the past 20-odd years.

Tiger Woods, 10 feet from the can and a putting stroke which has been preserved more carefully than the Guernica.

    You know the ending.

Tiger sinks the putt and walks off with a par. He's back.

  14. Harrington hits the turn in frontpublished at 16:20 BST 7 April 2022

    Harrington -1 (9)

    Padraig HarringtonImage source, Getty Images

Padraig Harrington last played in the Masters back in 2015, but he is certainly enjoying his 16th time at Augusta as he reaches the turn in one under and actually holding a share of the lead!

The three-time major winner has three birdies and two bogeys in his front nine having played some solid stuff.

  15. Postpublished at 16:19 BST 7 April 2022

    Woods, Oosthuizen, Niemann (16:04 BST)

Navigating the slopes around Augusta looks more exhausting than a day out in the Peak District.

Woods knocks his ball up the slope to within 10 feet and climbs up the terrain after it.

Louis Oosthuizen for birdie... good roll. Should be enough for the par.

  17. Smith off to shaky startpublished at 16:13 BST 7 April 2022

    DeChambeau E, Smith +2 (1)

Bryson DeChambeau gets his Masters tilt under way with a regulation par on the first. A fairway finder off the tee is followed by a pin-high second to 20 feet and two putts.

His playing partner Cameron Smith, tipped by many to go well this week, opens with a double bogey. He can only hack out of a fairway bunker and then misses the green with his third shot.

A scruffy start for last month's Players Championship winner.

  18. Double trouble for leaderspublished at 16:13 BST 7 April 2022

    Lee E (6), Migliozzi E (7)

Our previous leaders have both suffered with a double bogey taking them out of top spot.

Min Woo Lee came up well short on the par-three sixth hole, then needed two chips to get up to the hole with the pin cut on the top shelf.

Migliozzi found the trees off the tee of the seventh and carded a six.

  19. Postpublished at 16:12 BST 7 April 2022

    Woods (16:04 BST)

A low branch hangs overhead, but should be plenty of room for Woods to cut an iron onto the green.

That's what he does... but wait. It hits the upslope and trickles back off the front of the green.

  20. Postpublished at 16:10 BST 7 April 2022

    Woods (16:04 BST)

Woods pushed his drive right, ending up just short of the bunker as it turned out.

Oosthuizen on the fairway, Niemann up ahead in the sand.
