    Woods -1, Oosthuizen +1, Niemann -1 (6)

Uh oh. Following the elation of that birdie, there is a loose drive from Tiger Woods on the tight par-four seventh.

Instead of finding green fairway, he has found copper bark in the trees.

  2. Postpublished at 17:50 BST 7 April 2022

    Matsuyama +1, Piot (US)* +3, Thomas E (5)

Amateur James Piot finds the sand off the tee on the fifth, not great off the back of a bogey.

He can't quite get enough gas on his second and leaves himself a difficult mid-range putt to save par, which slides past.

Consecutive pars for the seasoned professionals.

  3. Gooch joins the leaderpublished at 17:47 BST 7 April 2022

    Gooch -2 (8)

We've got two Masters debutants at the top of the leaderboard now as Talor Gooch joins Harry Higgs thanks to a birdie four on the eighth.

It's two solid blows to get up near the green for Gooch before a nice chip that checks up on the second bounce and leaves a simple putt to go two under.

  4. Postpublished at 17:45 BST 7 April 2022

    Finau +1, Scheffler E, Scott -1 (4)

Three beautiful drives down the 495-yard par four fifth from this group.

Scheffler's up first. He won't like that, hanging it way out right. Another test to save par.

Finau has to be thinking birdie after that double bogey on the fourth, but he overcooks his approach and will have to get up-and-down to avoid dropping to +2.

Scott also misjudges his approach from the centre of the fairway and finds another bunker! Didn't see that coming.

  5. Bogey for Bergerpublished at 17:44 BST 7 April 2022

    Berger E, Fleetwood +1, Kisner +3 (7)

Tommy Fleetwood booms his tee shot away on the seventh and follows up with a decent iron shot over the three bunkers guarding the front of the green. It'll be another solid par for the Englishman.

Meanwhile, Kevin Kisner reeling from a third straight bogey after three putting from 42 feet on six is in much better shape this time around as he steadies the ship with a four.

Daniel Berger heads left off the tee on seven and then comes up short of the green protected by those three front bunkers. He flips his third on to 10 feet but then comes up short with his par-saving putt.

  6. Woods into tied thirdpublished at 17:43 BST 7 April 2022

    Woods -1, Oosthuizen +1, Niemann -1 (6)

Nobody would have believed this even a fortnight ago: Tiger Woods is one shot off the Masters lead.

Yes, yes, we know it is early days, But still! The man thought his leg was going to be amputated this time last year.

Harry Higgs and Talor Gooch are sitting pretty at the top of the leaderboard on two under.

  7. Birdie for Woodspublished at 17:41 BST 7 April 2022

    Woods -1, Oosthuizen +1, Niemann -1 (6)

Next up is Niemann, who doesn't go full throttle with his birdie putt. Threesy does it.

If Tiger walks off the sixth green with three, then even the respectful folk of Augusta will be kicking off.

Of course, that doesn't happen. Woods taps in his birdie putt and goes into the red!

  8. Postpublished at 17:38 BST 7 April 2022

    Woods E, Oosthuizen +2, Niemann -1 (5)

If this was a friendly game, Oosthuizen and Niemann would be telling Woods to pick up his ball. A gimme of a birdie.

Oosthuizen earns his two in a much harder fashion, brilliantly sinking a long putt to slightly avenge the double bogey on the last.

  9. Par start for MacIntyrepublished at 17:37 BST 7 April 2022

    MacIntyre E (1)

Robert MacIntyre, who's here after finishing in a tie for 12th on his debut last year, smokes his drive down the first and follows it up with a sublime second to 13 feet.

No dice with the birdie putt, but it's a safe opening par for the left-handed Scot.

  10. Postpublished at 17:36 BST 7 April 2022

    Woods E, Oosthuizen +2, Niemann -1 (5)

Onto the sixth... OMG. Tiger Woods casually sticks a short iron to within two feet!

Murmurs started from the moment his clubhead sweetly connects with the ball and the volume increases as eyes stayed fixed on his ball.

Roars of pleasure, and perhaps surprise, greet the ball kissing the dancefloor and sidling next to its beau.

The man is - in the nicest possible way - a freak.

Edward Smith: what am I expecting from Tiger this week?... well what else would I expect from a Champion sportsman like Tiger but for a win to be the wins of all wins ever...

  12. Postpublished at 17:35 BST 7 April 2022

    Finau +1, Scheffler E, Scott -1 (4)

Finau's snookered on the fourth, and can only punch a chip out short of the green. He's played two and he's not even on the dancefloor yet.

It doesn't get much better from there. His third trickles seven feet past and he misses the putt - a double bogey!

    That's got to sting.

Scott and Scheffler both judge their bunker shots wonderfully and secure their pars.

  13. Back-to-back birdies for Smithpublished at 17:32 BST 7 April 2022

    DeChambeau E, Smith E (6)

Bryson DeChambeau doesn't look quite right to me and knocks a tiddler right on the fifth to make bogey.

Cameron Smith is right back in business mind. He picks up a birdie on five with a sensational chip and then nails his tee shot into the par-three sixth.

The Australian lands his ball dead around 18 inches from the cup to take back-to-back birdies.

  14. Woods lips out for birdiepublished at 17:31 BST 7 April 2022

    Woods E, Oosthuizen +2, Niemann -1 (5)

What a fact! The television commentators tell us Tiger Woods has not had a birdie on the fifth since 2005. Can he end that run? No!

The knees were bending... he thought he had it. But Augusta bit back and spat the ball out after it circled the lip.

Double trouble sees Ooshuizen slips down the leaderboard quicker than if he'd hit a snake instead of a ladder.

  15. Postpublished at 17:30 BST 7 April 2022

    Finau -1, Scheffler E, Scott -1 (3)

The 222-yard par-three fourth is the kind of hole that these players look at and say "yep, let's get a par and move on".

Scott will do well to get his after finding the bunker with his effort.

It's even worse for Finau. A big pull and lands on the cart path that runs down the left-hand side of the hole.

What can Scheffler do? Not a lot, and he joins Scott in the bunker.

  16. Postpublished at 17:27 BST 7 April 2022

    Berger -1, Fleetwood +1, Kisner +2 (5)

Kevin Kisner is having one. Lots of players in the early groups going right down the fifth and leaving themselves in bother and 38-year-old no exception.

The American leaves himself an lengthy chip all the way across the mammoth green and can't get close enough to save his par.

Tommy Fleetwood also drops a shot after seeing his chip on, run away to the back of the green. Blimey.

  17. Postpublished at 17:25 BST 7 April 2022

    Finau -1, Scheffler E, Scott -1 (3)

Finau pulls his approach into the third green. Not great given he had a short iron in his hands, but he makes par from there.

Scott flicks one into 20 feet and his putt lips out! So close to back-to-back birdies for the 2013 winner. The Aussie's looking solid so far.

Scheffler only has 67 yards left. Decent effort and 15 feet for a birdie. Can he make it? No, he can't, and it's a third successive par.

  18. Postpublished at 17:22 BST 7 April 2022

    Woods E, Oosthuizen E, Niemann -1 (4)

Woods' caddie Joe LaCava knows the Augusta terrain almost as well as his gaffer.

LaCava, who has also carried for Fred Couples in the past, does the maths as Tiger swigs some water before his second shot.

The increasing wind could be an issue here. Not for Woods, it seems.

The 15-time major champion draws his ball towards the flag, hitting the shelf of the green to loud whoops.

The ball can't quite hang onto the same tier, but he has a chance from 15 feet for a birdie.

What are your expectations of Tiger this week?

Bob: Fantastic that Tiger even made it, but an heroic 73 today will see him fade away tomorrow and miss the cut. Sorry to all the dreamers.

  20. 'I've come on so much' - MacIntyrepublished at 17:20 BST 7 April 2022

    Robert MacIntyre (17:21 BST)

Robert MacIntyre, who is about to begin his tournament, says he "learned more from the lows" in a rollercoaster 2021 and is a "completely different" golfer as he returns to the Masters 12 months on from his memorable debut.

The Scot tied for 12th at Augusta and a subsequent share of eighth at The Open in July maintained his record of making the cut in every major he has played.

However, he has since dropped out of the world's top 50 - to 73rd - and failed in his bid for a PGA Tour card.

"I've come on so much," MacIntyre said.

"As a person, I wouldn't say I've changed much, but as a golfer I feel completely different. I know the direction I'm trying to go in. There's so much that people don't see from highs and lows."
