  1. Birdie for Thomas as Matsuyama drops a shotpublished at 17:19 BST 7 April 2022

    Matsuyama +1, Piot (US)* +1, Thomas E (3)

Hideki Matsuyama drops a shot on the third after starting with two solid pars.

A wayward tee shot takes the 2021 champion into the pines down the right but he pitches out to give himself a gentle lob onto the dance floor.

His reaction is pretty much emotionless as a six-foot putt to save par lips out though. You win some, you lose some.

Justin Thomas benefits from a safe tee shot down the middle, then nips his approach to within seven feet of the pin, with his ball spinning off the green to give him a chance to get back to level par. Which he takes.

Amateur James Piot takes two putts to make par.

    Finau -1, Scheffler E, Scott -1 (2)

Irons for placement off the par-four third for Finau and Scott. A smart play, and they're both safely in the fairway.

Scheffler, perhaps a bit miffed that he didn't birdie the second, is out with the chief. He wallops it way down there and will have just 67 yards left for his second.

    Woods E, Oosthuizen E, Niemann -1 (4)

In typical Tiger fashion, his opening tee shot was not quite what he was visualizing as he walked out.

But he recovered beautifully and showed his putting is as clinical as ever.

Watch how he fared on the first in our clip below...

  4. Harman in handy positionpublished at 17:12 BST 7 April 2022

    Harman -1 (8)

Augusta is said to set up nicely for the left-handers, with Phil Mickelson, Bubba Watson and Mike Weir all adding a green jacket to their wardrobe over the years.

Brian Harman shot 69-69 to start last year before finishing T12 so knows how to get around the course, and he's one under for his round after a birdie at eight.

Could the Georgia native be yet another left-hander to triumph?

We asked what your expectations were from Tiger this week.

Matthew Bennett: I have no expectation that Tiger will make the cut. I’m actually looking forward to him missing it so we can focus on the real contenders.

John Petrie: Sad to say this but I don't think Tiger will make the cut.

Let us know how you think he will do!

    Finau -1, Scheffler E, Scott -1 (2)

Scheffler has a lot of green to work with from the bunker. It's aggressive...a bit too aggressive and has 11 feet coming back for a bird, which he can't convert.

Scott displays his imagination from just off the back of the green, tapping a three-wood down to five feet and sets up a birdie. Lovely stuff.

    Finau from 45 feet for eagle. Ah, that's a well-judged lag putt - and a tap-in birdie!

Finau and Scott are up and running.

  7. Woods continues even start, Niemann birdiespublished at 17:10 BST 7 April 2022

    Woods E, Oosthuizen E, Niemann -1 (4)

Tiger Woods to go first for the birdie, knocking his ball towards the hole without overcommitting. He's a few inches short.

That gives a line to Louis Oosthuizen, who attacks a little more and goes a few inches long.

Barring a complete disaster, they will be a pair of threes.

Niemann, for a two and back-to-back birdies, drains his ball confidently.

Suggest all three guys will be happy with their starts.

    BBC Sounds

Tiger Woods has had so many trials and tribulations sitting alongside his many triumphs in a remarkable career.

But he creates a buzz like no other player in the history of the game.

Woods' presence at Augusta, the first major of the year, his attempt to come back from a potentially life-threatening car crash which nearly cost him his right leg, is the stuff of sporting legend.

This is the first time he's playing competitively since the Masters in November 2020 - when he was defending champion and the BBC's Golf correspondent, Iain Carter, reflects on the next chapter in Woods' extraordinary life and career.

    Woods E, Oosthuizen E, Niemann E (3)

Joaquin Niemann takes the honour on the fourth courtesy of that birdie on the last.

What a beauty! The Chilean is a cracking shot-making and shows why here, flighting his ball over the bunker in front of the flag and letting to roll up to about seven feet away.

Tiger Woods and Louis Oosthuizen pull their efforts slightly left, but both have birdies putts from the front corner of the green.

  10. 'The back issues are persistent' - Casey on his withdrawalpublished at 17:05 BST 7 April 2022

Paul Casey has just taken to Instagram, external to explain his withdrawal from the Masters.

The Englishman was set to play with Bryson DeChambeau and Cameron Smith but did not make the first tee.

"Sadly I’ve had to withdraw from this years Masters tournament," he wrote.

"The back issues are persistent and thus preventing me from being able to compete. I shall now focus on my treatment and recovery so I can return to competitive form as soon as possible.

"Good luck to all the players in the field I am sorry to miss it. Thank you Masters, I hope to see you next year."

  11. Higgs heads the fieldpublished at 17:01 BST 7 April 2022

    Higgs -2 (8)

Debutant Harry Higgs is the only man on the course right now on two under after he finds a birdie four at the eighth.

He made it look all too easy with his second shot comfortably short of the green before a nice chip left him with a simple birdie putt.

It's not a hard game sometimes...

  12. Postpublished at 17:00 BST 7 April 2022

    Berger -1, Fleetwood E, Kisner +1 (4)

Tommy Fleetwood comes up short and left on the par-three fourth the wrong side of the sand.

He navigates that particular obstacle but can't save his par with a putt from 12 feet or so.

Kevin Kisner also drops a shot after putting to save par from a similar spot, albeit he went long off the tee. Daniel Berger with a birdie chance....no. The 29-year-old gets his read slightly awry and sees his putt slide eight from 10 feet.

  13. Postpublished at 17:00 BST 7 April 2022

    Finau E, Scheffler E, Scott E (1)

Scheffler's second at the par-five second. He hangs it out right and, not for the first time today, finds the sand. That was loose.

But Finau hits a cracker into the middle of the green after a 348-yard drive! He'll have 45 feet for eagle, but is looking good for a birdie.

Scott isn't happy with his approach, however. He flies the green and that looks ultra-tricky from there.

  14. How's Tiger's movement?published at 17:00 BST 7 April 2022

    Woods E, Oosthuizen E, Niemann E (3)

So, the golf looks smooth enough - as Justin Thomas and Fred Couples had been telling us after their practice rounds with Woods - but what about the mobility?

There is a slight limp but he's moving much better than he was at some points of his practice rounds.

Of course, we're only three holes into 72...

  15. Another par for Woodspublished at 16:56 BST 7 April 2022

    Woods E, Oosthuizen E, Niemann E (3)

Woods for birdie... but there is a stony silence and a frustrated follow-up swing of the putter from the five-time champ.

Never looked like troubling the hole for the first contact.

Tweet-tweet! Niemann earns the first birdie of the grouping, bringing him back to level par.

Will Tiger stay there alongside him? Of course, he will. The sort of putt which Woods can knock in with his eyes closed.

  16. Birdie for Brysonpublished at 16:54 BST 7 April 2022

    DeChambeau -1, Smith +2 (3)

Bryson DeChambeau has missed a chunk of the season due to hand and hip injuries and he is not quite looking in full flow with his body movements.

But he rolls in a birdie on the third after an awkward looking putt. Just the par for Cameron Smith.

  17. Postpublished at 16:52 BST 7 April 2022

    Woods E, Oosthuizen E, Niemann +1 (2)

Oosthuizen is slightly short with what could be an eight iron.

Woods goes next with a wedge from 135 yards... line looks good but the backspin brings a few groans from the galleries.

    It's alright, folks, it's alright.

Woods is on the fringe but still asks for the short stick.

  18. Postpublished at 16:49 BST 7 April 2022

    Finau E, Scheffler E, Scott E (1)

All three players pummel their drives down the second fairway.

A chance for at least one of them to land an early eagle (and the nice bit of crystal that comes with it)...

  19. Olazabal shines at Amen Cornerpublished at 16:49 BST 7 April 2022

    Olazabal +4 (14)

Jose Maria Olazabal could sell his one under total going through Amen Corner for a high price as he handled the tricky three holes beautifully.

Having two green jackets in the locker helps, of course, but he's played the par-five 13th hole perfectly as a three-shotter, letting his wedge do the work to set up a tap-in birdie.

  20. Postpublished at 16:48 BST 7 April 2022

    Woods E, Oosthuizen E, Niemann +1 (2)

    It's a shorty, but it's a goody.

Elder statesman Woods and Oosthuizen go for placement on the 350-yard par four, Niemann is full of youthful exuberance and sticks with the big dog driver.

A nice draw ends up short of the green on the left, providing a nice angle to potentially get close with the wedge.
