  1. Smith makes birdiepublished at 18:23 BST 7 April 2022

    DeChambeau E, Smith -1 (8)

Bryson DeChambeau's hip looks like it is rotating a lot more smoothly now as he leathers his tee shot away on the eighth hole, but that's veering off right into the pines.

His second scoots out over the fairway into the foliage leaving him nowt else but to chip sideway back into play. A glorious sand wedge to a foot helps him save par.

Cameron Smith's tee shot is like poetry in motion, with that lovely ping sound for added effect.

And he reaps the rewards of that and a wonderful third shot that stops dead around 10 feet from the cup, to knock in a birdie.

  2. Fast start from Kanayapublished at 18:23 BST 7 April 2022

    Kanaya -2 (2)

Talk about the perfect start, well how about this from 23-year-old Takumi Kanaya as he starts birdie, birdie to lead the tournament at two under.

The former number one amateur is playing the Masters for the first time as a professional but he's definitely got the game to go well.

  3. Postpublished at 18:22 BST 7 April 2022

    Finau +1, Scheffler E, Scott E (7)

The seventh has been a bit of struggle.

Scott and Scheffler are in the sand in two, but they both conjure wonderful shots and make par. Impressive.

Finau only has 149 yards for his second, but leaves himself 51 feet. He's had a couple of questionable shots from around that distance already today.

His putt is a decent one, however, and he holes out confidently for a par.

The par-five eighth is up next, and all three have the firepower needed to get there in two.

    Woods -1, Oosthuizen +1, Niemann -1 (7)

Tiger Woods pounds up the steep eighth fairway. This is where all the rehab pays dividends.

Off to the right, Woods tries to float over the mound and hit the fringe. But he's short and the ball dies in the semi-rough.

Count to 10, Tiger... Woods stares down at the ground for a few seconds.

This is the time when many of us amateurs would be tempted to fling our wedge at the bag/into the trees.

  5. Bogey for JTpublished at 18:18 BST 7 April 2022

    Matsuyama +1, Piot (US)* +3, Thomas +1 (6)

Justin Thomas is not happy with himself as he trudges off the sixth green with a bogey on his card.

The American goes right into the spectators and must have had a poor lie as his chip squirms out a few yards but still miles off the putting surface. A brilliant recovery chip limits the damage.

Zero birdie chances there with Hideki Matsuyama and James Piot both saving par after coming up short from the tee.

  6. Postpublished at 18:16 BST 7 April 2022

    Rose -1 (2)

Justin Rose gets his tournament under way nicely as he cans one of those slippery downhill putts on the second for a birdie four.

Not much talk about Rose' chances this week but he's got six top 10 finishes around here and finished second twice, so the experience is certainly there.

  7. Postpublished at 18:16 BST 7 April 2022

    MacIntyre -1 (3)

MacIntyre fails to find the green with his approach at the short par-four third, but he manages to escape with a par and maintains his early momentum.

  8. Postpublished at 18:13 BST 7 April 2022

    Woods -1, Oosthuizen +1, Niemann -1 (7)

Finally it is Tiger's turn. Hmmm, not what he was planning.

The ball drifts right and is not troubling the green which he was waiting patiently for.

    We've all been there...

  9. Birdies for Berger & Kisnerpublished at 18:12 BST 7 April 2022

    Berger -1, Fleetwood +1, Kisner +2 (8)

Precision stuff from Tommy Fleetwood on eight as he smashes his tee shot over 300 yards down the middle of the fairway.

Kevin Kisner is shorter and drifts right, with the American then leaving his second 70 yards from the pin.

Daniel Berger, who keeps Kisner company off the tee, knocks his second to within a dozen club lengths of the green then chips on to seven feet and birdie range. In drops his putt.

Can Fleetwood get on the birdie train? Nope, his second drifts right and his hands come off his putter in frustration as a 10-footer straightens up on him after chipping on.

Ohhh, almost an eagle for Kisner, whose third spins off the putting surface before trickling down and over the edge of the cup.

  10. Shane still stunnedpublished at 18:12 BST 7 April 2022

    Lowry +1 (9)

Shane Lowry reaches the turn at one over after a solid enough front nine. Something tells me he may still be thinking of the almost hole-in-one though...

  11. Postpublished at 18:11 BST 7 April 2022

    Woods -1, Oosthuizen +1, Niemann -1 (7)

Hang on, Tiger. The five-time champ has to wait for the group ahead - Bryson DeChambeau and Cameron Smith - to clear the green.

Why on Earth is a two-ball taking so long? Maybe there are some slow coaches ahead of them.

While he waits, Woods stretches out his back. Eeek, steady on.

  12. Postpublished at 18:09 BST 7 April 2022

    Woods -1, Oosthuizen +1, Niemann -1 (7)

Tiger Mk IV (post-car crash) looks awfully similar to Tiger Mk III (post-back fusion).

Every movement and every swing is carefully thought out. Every shot is meticulously placed.

    Nothing goes to chance nowadays.

The steel in the eyes - which has been evident since day dot - continues to burn.

Another beauty of a drive on par-five eight, starting left and arcing right into the middle of the fairway, gives him a chance of reaching the green in two.

  13. Postpublished at 18:08 BST 7 April 2022

    Finau +1, Scheffler E, Scott E (6)

It hasn't been pretty from Scheffler so far, and he misses the seventh fairway with an iron. He's been a little ragged.

Finau and Scott both elect to take driver. The American ends up just down the left while Scott rips it down the right.

  14. Scott drops backpublished at 18:04 BST 7 April 2022

    Finau +1, Scheffler E, Scott E (6)

Right, the par-three sixth. Tiger nearly aced it, but what can this lot do?

Scott's up first. Oh dear, it's slightly short and right, and rolls all the way back down to the front of the green! His chip leaves him around seven feet - he's missed it! It's a first bogey of the tournament and he drops back to level par.

Finau didn't fare so well on the last par-three, but he finds the green here and lags his birdie try to kick-in range.

Scheffler hits a beauty to 12 feet, but his putt stays above ground. Chance missed.

Six straight pars for the world number one.

  15. Willett goes back-to-backpublished at 18:03 BST 7 April 2022

    Willett -1 (9)

Danny Willett was a winner here in 2016 remember, and he's started off pretty smartly today as he cards back-to-back birdies on the eighth and ninth to go to one under at the turn.

It's a nice chip for an up-and-down on eight from the Yorkshireman, before he sinks one of those long, curling putts on nine that sees him aim miles away from the hole to allow for the ball to come sliding down a huge slope.

  18. Bob's on the movepublished at 17:56 BST 7 April 2022

    MacIntyre -1 (2)

MacIntyre's long game looks to be in good shape. At the par-five second, he thumps another cracking drive down the fairway and sticks his 232-yard approach to just over 40 feet.

A great chance for a two-putt birdie, and he takes it!

    Impressive start from the Scot.

  19. Postpublished at 17:55 BST 7 April 2022

    Woods -1, Oosthuizen +1, Niemann -1 (7)

Punching out of the trees sees Woods end in front of the bunker, allowing him to chip close and knock in the par putt.

An excellent save. Not a bad player, this Eldrick lad.

Playing partner Joaquin Niemann has a long birdie putt for a share of the lead and, while the line is decent, he didn't give it enough beef.

Louis Oosthuizen, so often the bridesmaid at the majors, is agonisingly close to another birdie and wiping out that double bogey on the fifth.

  20. Postpublished at 17:53 BST 7 April 2022

    Finau +1, Scheffler E, Scott -1 (5)

Scott from the bunker over the back of the fifth green. It's a bit tame and barely avoids snaking back down the slope, but he makes the par putt and remains bogey-free.

Scheffler faces a 58-foot putt across the green. It's bold and there's a bit of work left for the world's top-ranked player, but he confidently pours the putt in.

Finau produces a delicate chip from off the back and tidies up for his par. He needed that.
