  1. Six of the bestpublished at 19:13 BST 7 April 2022

Chile's Joaquin Niemann has a share of the lead, largely thanks to that incredible eagle on the ninth.

And holing out from 105 yards leaves him in exalted company...

    Finau E, Scheffler -2, Scott E (9)

A bit of an odd follow-through from Scheffler with his drive on the 10th. Gets away with it, though, as it turns enough in the air to grab a piece of the fairway.

Finau pipes one down the middle, and Scott follows suit.

  3. Willett joins the leaderspublished at 19:13 BST 7 April 2022

    Willett -2 (13)

Danny Willett picks up another shot to move to two under as he takes the Zach Johnson approach to the par-five 13th hole with an easy lay-up relying on his distance control with a wedge.

The Willett wedge is spot-on and he strokes home a birdie that puts him in a six-way tie for the lead.

  5. Postpublished at 19:09 BST 7 April 2022

    Woods E, Oosthuizen +1, Niemann -2 (10)

Welcome to Amen Corner, folks. This separates the best from the very best.

Tiger Woods has the honour and unleashes a loving-sounding drive.

"Go," he mutters. But it goes more than well enough.

Niemann's ball sails past Woods to the sound of approval, with Oosthuizen making it a full house on the fairway.

  6. Postpublished at 19:07 BST 7 April 2022

    Matsuyama E, Piot (US)* +4, Thomas +1 (9)

Defending champion Hideki Matsuyama said he was optimistic of being 100% fit for today.

The 30-year-old, who became the first Japanese player to win a major with last year's victory, pulled out of the recent Players Championship shortly before the start of the first round with a back injury.

He then withdrew midway through his second round of the Valero Texas Open last week with a neck problem.

But he's going about his business steadily, picking up a birdie on the eighth to cancel out his earlier bogey on the third. Is a back-nine charge on the way?

  7. Postpublished at 19:05 BST 7 April 2022

    Woods E, Oosthuizen +1, Niemann -2 (10)

Onwards to the 11th! This is one of the holes which Augusta has been tinkering with since last year.

Now a 520-yard par-four (that is not a typo), the tee box has been pushed back and the right side of the fairway has been recontoured.

Traditionally the second toughest hole on the course, Rory McIlroy said the other day that it is "basically a new hole".

Let's see how Tiger Woods - the man who knows this course better than anyone - gets on...

  8. Scheffler joins the leadpublished at 19:04 BST 7 April 2022

    Finau E, Scheffler -2, Scott E (9)

Scott judges the contours on the ninth green like a man who has gotten the job done around here before.

He and Finau - who slides his makeable birdie putt by - make par, but it's one better for Scheffler! Two birdies on the bounce to close his front nine and he joins the leaders on two under!

  9. Rahm at the ready?published at 19:04 BST 7 April 2022

    Rahm (19:11 BST)

    Jon RahmImage source, Getty Images

US Open champion and world number two Jon Rahm is unsurprisingly one of the favourites at a major where he always seems to impress at since making his Masters debut in 2017.

Despite being limited to one nine-hole practice round last year after arriving at Augusta National later than normal, following the birth of his first child, Rahm finished in the top 10 for a fourth consecutive year.

The Spaniard is so comfortable playing at Augusta National that he is on a 15-round run of shooting even par or lower.

After ending up in ties for ninth, seventh and fifth in the last three years, acquiring a green jacket will be well on the agenda.

  10. Watch: How Woods got off to a positive startpublished at 19:03 BST 7 April 2022

Eight pars, a birdie and a bogey so far for Tiger Woods - here's how he recovered from a wayward tee shot to par the first...

  11. Postpublished at 19:02 BST 7 April 2022

    MacIntyre -1 (6)

MacIntyre's in a spot of bother on the par-three sixth. He's off the back of the green and leaves his chip short. That wasn't his best effort.

    It's a pressure-packed seven-foot putt to stay bogey-free. Makes it!

  12. Woods saves par, Niemann drops shotpublished at 19:02 BST 7 April 2022

    Woods E, Oosthuizen +2, Niemann -2 (10)

A dropped shot for Joaquin Niemann, after all. Louis Oosthuizen follows suit. He knew he'd missed that as it left the putter.

Tiger Woods then. Can he salvage something which the others couldn't? Yes! Neat up and down keeps him level pegging.

  13. DeChambeau drops a shotpublished at 19:01 BST 7 April 2022

    DeChambeau +1, Smith -2 (10)

Oh Bryson DeChambeau pulls his second into the 10th and that costs him dearly as he coughs up a second bogey of the day.

Cameron Smith plays to the heart of the green and two putts for a safe par.

  14. Postpublished at 19:00 BST 7 April 2022

    Finau E, Scheffler -1, Scott E (8)

Finau's in the pine straw down the right of the ninth, but he has a clear path to the green.

It's a punchy effort under the wind, and it's brilliant - he'll have a great look at a second straight birdie.

Scott overcooks his shot from the fairway and leaves himself a treacherous downhill putt. A grimace from the Aussie.

Can Scheffler get his in closer? He throws it way past but it spins back and he, like Finau, is eyeing back-to-back birdies.

  15. Postpublished at 19:00 BST 7 April 2022

    Woods E, Oosthuizen +1, Niemann -3 (9)

Would not fancy being in the shoes of either Oosthuizen or Niemann here.

Oosthuizen is in terrible spot down below the green, with more rolling hills than the Cotswolds ahead.

Niemann has the spade out in the sand, with little green to play with between the bunker and the pin.

Both judge their shots nicely and give themselves a chance of nabbing a par on what is traditionally Augusta's hardest hole.

  16. History lesson for Morikawapublished at 18:59 BST 7 April 2022

    Morikawa (19:00 BST)

Scottish veteran Sandy Lyle gave Open champion Collin Morikawa a useful history lesson on the final day of practice before the 86th Masters.

American Morikawa admitted earlier this week that he is more interested in creating history than remembering it, but that did not stop 1988 Masters champion Lyle from teaching the 25-year-old a thing or two.

"I talked to him about the Open Championship at St Andrews coming up because he's obviously defending champion," said Lyle, who won the Open at Royal St George's in 1985, 36 years before Morikawa lifted the Claret Jug at the same venue.

"I said this year is a very special year. He kind of goes 'why? It's just another Open'. I said 'it's the 150th anniversary of the belt'.

"So it was a little bit of a history lesson I gave to him because the Open Championship used to be played for the Challenge Belt."

  17. Ouch!published at 18:58 BST 7 April 2022

    Rose +1 (4)

Tough couple of holes for Justin Rose who goes double bogey and bogey to crash back down to one over for the tournament after a nice start.

Finding a bunker on each hole does the damage, especially on the third which is only a 350-yard par four but when you take two to get out the sand you're in trouble.

Rose cards just the second double on that hole today and gives himself plenty of work to do to get back on terms.

  18. Morikawa to play to his own strengthspublished at 18:58 BST 7 April 2022

    Morikawa (19:00 BST)

I'm sure everyone is pretty familiar with the saying 'go out there and play your own game'.

And by the sounds of it Open champion Collin Morikawa is going to do exactly that after finishing in ties for 44th and 18th in the previous two years.

"You hear how much you need to hit draws (at Augusta) and you have to hit it high and you have to do certain things, but that's what I did wrong the past two years," said the 25-year-old American.

"Pretty much my week of prep two years ago and last year was how do I hit a draw, how do I hit a high draw, how do I do this.

"This year was a little different. This year I just made sure everything was finely tuned and I go out there and figure out how to play the course to my strengths."

  20. Postpublished at 18:54 BST 7 April 2022

    Woods E, Oosthuizen +1, Niemann -3 (9)

What of this intrepid trio? All three find their target of the 10th fairway. So far, so good. The next leg of the journey isn't smooth for any of them.

Louis Oosthuizen's shoulders slump south as he tugs his approach west.

Tournament leader Joaquin Niemann drifts off course to the right.

Through the middle of those two will do Tiger Woods. That's what he does but too much backspin sees his ball slip off the front of the green.
