  1. Another McIlroy parpublished at 21:20 GMT 12 November 2020

    Johnson -2, Cantlay -1, McIlroy +1 (5)

Dustin Johnson leaves the fifth green chuntering away to his caddie after missing a birdie putt. Tap-in par though.

Rory McIlroy is also in for par. That's four on the trot after his first-hole wobble but with the vast majority of the field (62) at level par or better, he's already playing catch up.

Patrick Cantlay drops his first shot of the day to fall back to one under.

  2. Postpublished at 21:20 GMT 12 November 2020

    Thomas -4, Fitzpatrick E, Koepka E (6)

Justin Thomas is still going strong. He is making this game look remarkably easy so far, dropping in a putt to save par without ever really looking like he was going to miss.

  3. Birdie for Morikawapublished at 21:19 GMT 12 November 2020

    Scott -2 , Morikawa -1, Hatton E (6)

    That's better from Collin Morikawa.

The 23-year-old American is probably hoping/dreaming for more of the same after winning the PGA Championship in August at the first attempt.

And a birdie on Juniper, the par-three sixth, puts him back in the red numbers.

Not so good for Tyrell Hatton, who drops a shot after skipping off the green from the tee.

  4. Birdie for Thomaspublished at 21:08 GMT 12 November 2020

    Thomas -4, Fitzpatrick E, Koepka E (5)

Did Justin Thomas read my last post? He's back on it big time with a superb putt from all of 50 feet to grab his fourth birdie in five opening holes.

You cannot win the Masters if your iron play and putting is not up to scratch and so far the American is showing he is one of the best in the business when it comes to those aspects of the game.

  5. 'It was hold on to your horses'published at 21:07 GMT 12 November 2020

    DeChambeau -2 (F)

Bryson DeChambeau, who finished at two under: "I struggled to start. It was hold on to your horses halfway through. I came back strong at eight and nine with birdies to finish."

On the decision to use his usual 45-inch driver, rather than a new 48-inch model: "I probably spent three or four hours testing it, I was able to hit my 45 over all the bunkers, so I wasn't gaining that much with it (over the 48)."

On the hype around him heading into the tournament: "I have been proud of myself as I have looked at myself as an underdog to the total field. There are plenty of major winners and great golfers out there, and I haven't won here. So I have got to go and get it done."

  6. Postpublished at 21:06 GMT 12 November 2020

    Johnson -2, Cantlay -2, McIlroy +1 (4)

Dustin Johnson leaks his drive down the 495-yard par-four fifth out to the right and into the rough.

Up steps Rory McIlroy. Straight down the middle. And he's back up on his toes as he bounces off down the fairway after it. Could that impressive par save at the last be the catalyst for him?

  7. Postpublished at 21:05 GMT 12 November 2020

    Thomas -3, Fitzpatrick E, Koepka E (4)

Justin Thomas pulls into the station. The birdie run ends on the fourth as he takes a mere par.

Still nothing doing either way for Brooks Koepka who remains level but Matt Fitzpatrick drops a shot after missing the green off the tee.

  8. McIlroy digs himself out of a holepublished at 21:03 GMT 12 November 2020

    Johnson -2, Cantlay -2, McIlroy +1 (4*)

McIlroy makes an tremendous save with a 10 footer. As good as a birdie... sort of.

  9. Scott's symmetrypublished at 21:01 GMT 12 November 2020

    Scott -2, Morikawa E, Hatton -1 (5)

Quite nice symmetry to Adam Scott's round so far. The Australian who won here back in 2013 has looked on song with a par, birdie, birdie, par in his first four holes.

He'll probably hope a par on five kicks off another similar run.

England's Tyrrell Hatton grabbed a birdie on the second while Collin Morikawa has just dropped a shot after also picking up a stroke on the second.

  10. Postpublished at 20:59 GMT 12 November 2020

    Johnson -2, Cantlay -2, McIlroy +1 (3*)

    Aaaargh Rory!

McIlroy is in the greenside bunker on the right on the par three fourth.

Dustin Johnson's birdie chance is not taken after failing to give his putt enough juice.

Cantlay's birdie putt licks the lip.

  11. A closing birdiepublished at 20:59 GMT 12 November 2020

    Schauffele -5 (F)

American Xander Schauffele is one of the many players tipped to challenge this week and he's off to a great start...

  12. 'A lot of work has paid off'published at 20:59 GMT 12 November 2020

    Casey -7 (F)

Clubhouse leader Paul Casey: "I know this golf course better than most, my first was '04, I have been excited to get out here. It's a golf course I love to play.

"I spoke about the lack of fans at Harding Park (US PGA Championship) and it feels like to me, I didn't know how it would be, I still don't like it, I miss the energy, but the majors we have played, there is a sense that there is a bubble.

"What I desperately want is people pouring through the gates to watch myself and others play golf, but until that happens I'll make the most of it.

"I have worked really hard the last few weeks, I have blisters on my hands, a lot of work in a small amount of time has paid off and translated on to the golf course today."

  13. 'Luckily I pulled it back'published at 20:58 GMT 12 November 2020

    Rahm -3 (F)

Spaniard Jon Rahm, who carded a 69: "Really grateful to be out here, the weather forecast looked awful. To be out here is something to be thankful for. My start was not much to look forward to, but luckily I pulled it back - that eagle at two and to finish with a strong 69.

"It's one of those golf courses that extremely suits feel players. When you are someone like me who trusts his instincts, I feel like you have the upper hand here. Seve (Ballesteros) used to say you play Augusta National with your fingertips."

  15. Postpublished at 20:55 GMT 12 November 2020

    Johnson -2, Cantlay -2, McIlroy +1 (3*)

Safe pars for world number one DJ and McIlroy but 28-year-old Patrick Cantlay produces the most timely spin to get his ball to inches of the third flag. The American makes his second birdie and is going along nicely.

  16. Shot of the day (so far)published at 20:52 GMT 12 November 2020

    Reed -4 (F)

Step forward Patrick Reed - a sensational shot to leave a tap-in birdie.

  17. Postpublished at 20:49 GMT 12 November 2020

Now how about this for a statistic.

That was Tiger Woods' first bogey-free opening round at Augusta National and his first bogey-free round at this course since 2008.

Oh and it's also his first bogey-free round at a major in his last 106 rounds dating back to his first round at the 2009 PGA Championship.

  18. Woods three off the leadpublished at 20:48 GMT 12 November 2020

    Woods -4 (F)

The five-time champ and reigning champ finishes with his 14th par of the round. He will rue some of the many birdie opportunities he had, but to produce a faultless round is exceptional.

He wanted to be in the mix after the first round, and he is well and truly in the mix.

  19. 'I gave myself lots of chances'published at 20:42 GMT 12 November 2020

    Westwood -4 (F)

Lee Westwood on Sky Sports, after a round of 68: "It was nice to come back, I have obviously played well in the past but missed the last two. Nobody likes sitting at home watching this tournament when you know you could be playing in it.

"I found it really tough at the start, the first few years playing here. Then I started to get it, realise where you needed to hit it and where you need to come away from. I have gradually built my game-plan over the years to a point where I can see a score.

"I played well (today) missed a couple of putts, gave myself a lot of chances. Played well on the back nine without getting a couple of breaks."

  20. Birdie for Thomaspublished at 20:40 GMT 12 November 2020

    Thomas -3, Fitzpatrick -1, Koepka E (3)

Justin Thomas is well and truly on the birdie train.

    Three holes. Three birdies.
