As a player, you're always thinking you've got time to make moves.

You come to the crunch though and the 16th was the hole Rory McIlroy had to make something happen.

Unless something catastrophic happens to Aaron Rai, he will be too far back.

  2. 'Nice to get the heart rate up'published at 22:56 BST 17 May

    Smith -4 (68)

Cam Smith after finishing at -4: "It feels great to play nice. The last couple of years have been frustrating. I feel like I've been putting in the work and not really getting anything out of it.

"I feel like I've thrived in major championships my whole career and that kind of fell off. I just think you lose a little bit of confidence in your swing and maybe in your brain, and it can all happen so quickly."

On being chasing down the lead on Sunday: "I haven't been there in a little while. It was good. I love that stuff.

"We compete to win, and it was nice to get the heart rate up and, you know, feel your hands and your legs get a little bit jelly. It was cool."

  3. Steady par for Raipublished at 22:55 BST 17 May

    Aberg -4, Rai -7 (15)

Aaron Rai is safely through the third-hardest hole on the card with his lead intact.

He has got three holes to go. Can he hold his nerve?

Thumbs up if you think he will win this.

  4. No birdie for McIlroypublished at 22:55 BST 17 May

Superb splash out of the sand from Rory McIlroy.

It's a par five, but he's hanging on for dear life now. Somehow needs a birdie-birdie finish and help from Aaron Rai and Matti Schmid.

He's played the two par fives and driveable par-four 13th in one over today. Costly.

    Rose -3 (69)

Justin Rose only made the weekend after chipping in for eagle on Friday.

The 45-year-old Englishman just couldn't deliver enough birdies today and struggled a little off the tee as his round went on but at present he sits inside the top 10 after carding a one-under 69.

  6. Just a parpublished at 22:52 BST 17 May

    Rahm -5 (14)

It's a decent shot on the 14th from Jon Rahm but not a great one, so the best he can do is a par to stay two behind.

The tough 15th is up next, which he'll definitely take a par on before trying to step on the gas for the 16th.

  7. Schmid closes inpublished at 22:51 BST 17 May

    Smalley -4, Schmid -6 (13)

Matti Schmid clenches his fist as he moves to six under. The German's challenge is not over yet..

So close for Alex Smalley, whose putt lips out. He really ought to be back within two of the leader.

    McIlroy -4 (15)

No, Rory McIlroy had no chance there. He takes on the hero's shot at 16. It lands short and goes into the bunker.

It looks like he's just asked for someone to be ejected from the property too for saying something.

    Not a happy camper.

    Smalley -4, Schmid -5 (12)

Matti Schmid finds the greenside bunker as he attempts to reach the putting surface off the tee on the short 13th.

He splashes out of there to nine feet. Alex Smalley elects to lay up off the tee and chips inside of Schmid's ball.

How both could do with birdies here.

    Aberg -3, Rai -7 (14)

Another fine shot from Aaron Rai as he takes aim from the middle of the 15th fairway.

It's a long iron for the 230-yard distance and he has measured that beautifully. It lands a tad short and cambers onto the edge of the green.

He'll have 30 feet for birdie. That's the way to navigate this hole.

    McIlroy -4 (15)

Rory McIlroy from the deep stuff, not for the first time today.

He's lost that right and he's going to have a near-impossible pitch for his third, from the rough and coming over the bunker to a pin that's only a few yards beyond the edge.

He didn't have birdie the par-five ninth and it doesn't look like he'll make a four here.

    Rai -7 (14)

    Oliver Wilson
Former Ryder Cup player on BBC Radio 5 Live

If Aaron Rai can get through that 15th hole, the par-five 16th is very reachable.

Seventeen is a tough par three but it's been moved forward and the 18th is playing downwind.

The 15th is the tough one to get through.

Thirty six hours? I have some questions.

Can someone in the Holmes Chapel area please check in on Callum – and tell him to get some sleep!

I’ve been awake now for 36 hours. Beyond tired but cannot stop watching. Enthralling golf. Everything crossed for Rai. All credit to those who’ve set this course up. Testing, tricky, unforgiving but smart, quality golf will get you there. An agog viewer.

    Rai -7 (14)

Aaron Rai has left the driver in the bag for the 15th hole (a monster par four at 527 yards) and he's bisected the fairway perfectly.

Talk about sensible golf. His head is screwed on at the moment.

  16. Reed still fightingpublished at 22:40 BST 17 May

    Reed -4 (16)

Is it too little too late for Patrick Reed? He certainly won't think so after making a birdie on 16 to move to four under.

One more will tie Justin Thomas in the clubhouse and who knows, that could well end up being the number for a play-off.

    Big two holes coming up.

    McIlroy -4 (15)

Huge drive for Rory McIlroy at the par-five.

He's leaning left, which means it's gone right. It'll take a magical shot to reach the green in two from there.

His driver's let him down more and more as this round's progressed.

  18. Chunkedpublished at 22:36 BST 17 May

    Rahm -5, Taylor -4 (12)

Jon Rahm is usually special with a wedge in hand but he's chunked his chip from alongside the 13th green, albeit from a pretty tough lie.

He now faces a long putt for a birdie.

  19. Par for Raipublished at 22:36 BST 17 May

    Aberg -3, Rai -7 (14)

Thirty feet for Aaron Rai at the par-three 14th.

He nudges it up to the hole, leaving less than two feet for one of those safe pars that keep the scorecard intact.

A bogey for Ludvig Aberg and he may well be out of this now.

  20. McIlroy goes closepublished at 22:36 BST 17 May

    Downhill, 55 feet.

That's what faces Rory McIlroy on the 15th green. He sends it on its way. It looks good, it looks really good. Ohhh, it just runs out of pace and it's left in the jaws. That only needed another two rolls.

Excellent effort and a par. Needs at least a birdie at the par-five 16th.
