Aaron Rai just stood there almost in disbelief as the crowd went absolutely bananas behind him.

    Rahm -5 (15)

Aronimink has shown time and again that you have to find the fairways, as even with Jon Rahm's strength all he can do is punch his second shot forward into the front bunker after being off target from the tee.

Surely that's the US PGA for Aaron Rai.

No-one can stop this kind of golf!

    He is racing to victory!

We have spoken about how he has played incredibly efficient golf today.

That's the highlight we all wanted to see!

  5. Unbelievable birdie from Raipublished at 23:17 BST 17 May

    Rai -9 (17)

    His name's on the trophy!

Aaron Rai has just holed from 69 feet!!!

    Smalley -4, Schmid -6 (14)

Matti Schmid hates that. He's on the green but only just in the same zip code as the flag.

A monstrous 70-foot putt awaits. And that's just for a par.

His playing partner Alex Smalley is eyeing up a birdie attempt from 30 feet. Huge moments for both are coming up.

    Rai -8 (16)

    Kat Downes
Golf commentator on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

Two hours ago, Aaron Rai was at three under, in a tie for eighth after eight holes and Data Golf gave him just a 1.9% chance of being champion.

Those statistics will look very different now.

    Smalley -4, Schmid -6 (14)

Matti Schmid locates the right fairway bunker off the 15th tee. Reaching the dance floor from here is surely out of the question so it's just a chip down the fairway.

Anything less than a scrambling par could well mean curtains for his challenge.

    Aberg -4, Rai -8 (16)

    Aaron Rai's ball is dry.

    It's safely on the green.

    Aberg -4, Rai -8 (16)

Before we get ahead of ourselves, there is this par-three 17th for Aaron Rai to navigate.

    Some serious water trouble here.

Rory McIlroy finds the rough at 18.

    Cutting a dejected figure now.

  13. Rai misses eagle putt, pockets birdiepublished at 23:09 BST 17 May

I pondered the headline for this post. After all, Aaron Rai did miss a good shout at an eagle.

But he left a tap-in birdie and duly stretches his lead.

The engraver can go find their laser.

  14. Missed chancepublished at 23:08 BST 17 May

    Rahm -5 (15)

Jon Rahm sets himself up for a birdie on the tough 15th but he's not read it correctly as he sets it out to the left and it just keeps going on straight past the hole.

Big chance missed but a bigger chance is coming up on the 16th, the par five, up next and you feel Rahm needs to pick up at least a birdie there.

  15. No birdie for McIlroypublished at 23:07 BST 17 May

    McIlroy -4 (17)

Good effort from McIlroy, but it's just a three at 17.

He needs a birdie up the last to tie Justin Thomas at five under, but given how superb Aaron Rai has been, that's unlikely to be enough.

Has Aaron Rai really never won a major??

This guy just keeps putting his foot down.

What a magnificent shot into the 16th hole as he bounces it onto the green and watches his ball trundle to about 16 feet.

    He'll have that for eagle.

  17. Postpublished at 23:05 BST 17 May

    McIlroy -4 (16)

It has to be a two from Rory McIlroy at 17 you feel.

He tries to draw it in but doesn't quite get the curve and it lands safely on the middle of the dancefloor.

Needs to make a long one.

  18. Postpublished at 23:03 BST 17 May

    Smalley -4, Schmid -6 (14)

Matti Schmid finds the back of the 14th green. Two putts would be fine from there given he's got 30 feet or and breaking right-to-left effort to negotiate.

But he almost goes one better as he tickles a putt down to within a few inches of the cup.

Alex Smalley is well inside the German but lacks conviction in his birdie attempt and it drifts left.

Four holes left for this duo, who have not really drawn the sort of galleries you would expect from a final pairing in a major.

I played a few rounds with Aaron Rai at South Staffs when he was a junior. He was excellent at finding my balls in the rough. Hope he wins tonight.

    Tim, Wolverhampton

I can remember seeing Aaron Rai years ago on BBC Midlands news. It must be 15 years ago at least. Great to see him at the top of the leaderboard.

    Scott, Notts

That might have been when he set a world record at 15 for hitting 207 consecutive 10-foot putts.

Takes some discipline to do that.

    Rai -7 (15)

I glance up from my keyboard and Aaron Rai is hitting a tee shot onto the 16th fairway.

This guy understands the value of hitting the short grass and executing it again and again under this pressure is very impressive.
