Rai wins the US PGA Championship

    Iain Carter
BBC golf correspondent on BBC Radio 5 Live

It has been an extraordinary championships, the likes of which I haven't seen, with so many contenders.

If you'd said at the start of the day, the championship would be won by three shots, you wouldn't have believed it. There had not been that margin in the entire championship until Rai hit the accelerator.

Can somebody dig out that putt on the 17th for me?

    Could watch that all day.

Rai wins the US PGA Championship

Aaron Rai is now on the side of the 18th green next to caddie Jason Timmis, his wife, and some very beefy Pennsylvanian security guards.

He's sporting a beaming grin and is embraced by Matti Schmid and Alex Smalley as they leave.

They look genuinely delighted for him.

    Smalley -6 (70) Schmid -5 (69)

There's no trophy or winner's cheque on offer but Alex Smalley finishes his round in style with a brilliant birdie to finish in a tie for second with Jon Rahm.

That marks the American's best finish ever in a major.

Matti Schmid collects a par and now both players go over to congratulate Aaron Rai.

He's the perfect example of someone who has stuck to his plan and worked on it with his team and just kept at it.

It's a progression and it's an amazing story.

    What an example to everyone.

Fantastic stuff. So pleased for Aaron Rai and for Wolverhampton. My 5 and 8 year old play at the 3 Hammers where Aaron played, so cool they can now claim a major champion!

    Alex, Wolverhampton

Superb performance from Aaron Rai couldn’t happen to a nicer guy his final round has been sensational especially that 68ft birdie on 17th to cap it off, going to give Luke Donald a massive headache now with Ryder Cup selection.

Aaron Rai does things a little differently.

I don't usually deal in economics but here's a top tip after that performance. Go take out shares in head covers for irons and pairs of golf gloves.

Magnificent from Aaron Rai, nerves of steel. Thoroughly deserved. Well done sir.

    Gary, Berkshire

Following in the footsteps of Sandy Lyle and Ian Woosnam, another major-winning golfer from the West Midlands, take a bow Aaron.

  14. 'So proud of him'published at 23:53 BST 17 May

Rai wins the US PGA Championship

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Darren Prosser, who coached Aaron Rai from age of seven: "I had a great feeling about him. He's such a level-headed guy, everything he does is measured and he picked that course off fantastically. There has been so much hard work that has gone into this.

"He's such a nice lad. He doesn't forget and he's come back and done clinics for us. He's from a great family and he has always put stuff back in.

"I'm lost for words. I'm so proud of him."

  15. Not to be for Rahmpublished at 23:52 BST 17 May

    Rahm -6 (68)

Just not to be for Jon Rahm today as he finishes off with a par on 18 to sign for a 68 and finish on six under and currently in second place on his own.

Still, it's a promising performance and his best result in a major since the 2023 Open Championship so plenty of positives to take.

  16. Bogey for Smalleypublished at 23:49 BST 17 May

    Smalley -5, Schmid -5 (17)

Matti Schmid and Alex Smalley both find the dance floor on the 17th from the tee box.

Both have extremely long and difficuly putts.

Smalley's from around 50 feet comes up well short and the American is then unable to save his par from 12 feet.

His German playing partner does walk off with his par intact and they will head up the 18th jostling for position.

Absolutely made up for Aaron Rai. He played the course magnificently today. He showed you don’t have to smash the ball every drive. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting him and his family at golfing events and they are lovely people.

    Mark, Swansea

Someone is going to have to make way in Luke Donald’s Ryder Cup team. Pretty sure today has just booked Rai his flight to Adare! Straka, Hovland, Hojgaard x2 will all be sweating it!

This is how I think of Aaron Rai's final round - playing second shots from the fairway. Somehow golf is an awful lot easier when you can get purchase and control on the ball.

Oh and the 68-foot monster putt at the 17th.

  20. Postpublished at 23:41 BST 17 May

    Rai -9 (65)

So Aaron Rai hasn't quite been confirmed yet.

If Alex Smalley picks up three shots on 17 and 18, he can still catch him.

Thumbs up if you think he will...
