Went to West Kilbride one year (in the late 70s) on the second of January, a friend was a member.

Bitterly cold doesn’t even come close.

Wind whipping in off the sea, had about six layers of clothes on, could hardly swing the club, the ball felt like a brick, we lasted two holes and decided that the clubhouse and a pint.

Was a much, much better idea

Played North Wales Golf Club last February, where we were the only players out there.

Horizontal rain and big winds. One par four, 380 yards, hit driver, driver, seven iron and nailed all of them!

Waterproofs became a waste of time and were actually soaked through to undergarments. Steward gave us 3 towels to help us get dry

  2. Where's the danger today?published at 17:36 BST 11 July

The three toughest holes so far today have been the par-three ninth, the par-four 10th, and the par-five first, in that order.

Getting off to a solid start and making the turn in a steady manner is the key today, it would seem.

There have already been seven bogeys each on the ninth and tenth, and six on the opening hole.

There’s a sizeable crowd at the practice area, it’s about five deep at some point.

Rory McIlroy, Bob MacIntyre, Chris Gotterup, Min Woo Lee and Matt Fitzpatrick are among the fan favourites currently dialling it in on the range.

If there are five players right to watch and learn a thing or two from, this group would be high up on the list in fairness.

    McKibbin -4 (16)

The wheels are coming off for Tom McKibbin as he posts a second bogey in three holes om the closing stretch.

The Northern Irishman is in trouble off the tee on 16 and can't get up and down from 90 yards.

    Sullivan -8 (7)

We mentioned Andy Sullivan's fast start earlier on and he picks up another shot at the profitable seventh.

His eagle putt almost drops, but the Englishman settles for birdie and moves within one of the leaders.

Played Seahouses in October last year as storm Amy rolled in. Front nine was glorious (playing in shorts). By the 10th the rain and wind rolled in and by the time we got waterproofs on it was too late. Heated seats on in the car on the way back to Newcastle to try and dry out.

    Great response from Calum Hill.

He opts for putter from shy of the green at seven and rolls in the birdie to the delight of his home crowd.

Justin Thomas finds the dancefloor and his birdie putt looks in all the way, only to stop a smidgeon short.

  8. Birdie for Fleetwoodpublished at 17:10 BST 11 July

    Fleetwood -7 (12)

Two mighty blows gets Tommy Fleetwood onto the 12th green for an eagle putt.

It's a well-judged effort - not quite perfect, but a good birdie nonetheless.

A popular figure wherever he goes, Fleetwood is four under today and in a share of eighth place.

  9. Armitage makes early movepublished at 17:06 BST 11 July

    Armitage -8 (4)

A fast start has sent Marcus Armitage rocketing up the leaderboard.

Birdie, par, birdie, birdie through his first four holes moves him into a share of fourth on eight under.

So far this week, he's ranked fourth in putting and driving accuracy and fifth for scrambling.

What a week to hit form with spots in the upcoming Open Championship up for grabs, an event the Englishman is not yet qualified for.

Played Spey Valley in May. 4 degrees with a -3 windchill. Safe to say I’m now a fair weather golfer. Chills and painful hands just typing this….

  11. Hill falters after wild tee shotpublished at 16:57 BST 11 July

    Hill -3, Thomas -4 (6)

After some early praise, Calum Hill has faltered for the first time this afternoon.

On the downhill par-three fifth, he somehow pulls his tee shot well short and well right of the green, and into the scary stuff.

A hack out back across the green leaves him scrambling to make bogey, but he steadies himself to walk off with only one dropped shot.

Justin Thomas cards a three, and the pair both walk off the following hole with a par.

    Meissner -8 (64), Jamieson +4 (76)

    Martin Watt
BBC Sport Scotland at the Renaissance Club

Mac Meissner is a happy chap as he walks off 18 and no wonder.

A third birdie in a row completes an excellent round of 64 and leaves the American one off the lead.

It's a closing par for Scott Jamieson as the Scot signs for a torrid 76.

  13. Meissner makes movepublished at 16:48 BST 11 July

    Meissner -8 (64)

Saturday is moving day and American Mac Meissner has, well, moved.

A superb approach shot at 18 leaves him with eight feet for birdie and he rolls it in for a superb round of 64.

Seven birdies and just one bogey - there are still scores to be made out there.

Played Newbiggin a few years ago. Got to the furthest hole from the clubhouse and the heavens opened. Opened my bag to get my waterproofs only to discover I had left them at home!! Walked back to the clubhouse and spent nearly half an hour drying myself and all my clothes under the hand dryer. Waited for the rest of my society to finish in the clubhouse. I wasn't driving home so had a "few" glasses of red wine. Always check your golf bag.

    Sullivan -7 (3)

England's Andy Sullivan has got off to a flyer this afternoon.

Three straight birdies to start his round move him to within two of the leaders.

  16. Postpublished at 16:33 BST 11 July

    Hill -4, Thomas -4 (4)

Scotland's Calum Hill is out with Justin Thomas this afternoon and is currently keeping pace with the two-time major champion.

Hill has parred his opening four holes to keep him ticking over nicely at four under for the week, while a bogey at the first and a birdie on the fourth has Thomas on the same score.

The Scot had some looks at birdie on the last couple of holes, but it just won't drop for him.

The biggest crowd of the day so far is out with Tommy Fleetwood and Si Woo Kim, but the second largest is following these two as they plot their way around the links.

Played on a Saturday at my home course, drizzling when we started, partner gave up at the turn, by 11 the rain was really coming down and everyone else was streaming off the course but I persevered. By the time I got to the 17th green it was under water and my bag was soaked through, ruined a couple of good scorecards I had saved. Bought a waterproof bag the next day.

I played in hailstones in central Scotland back in March and still get pains in my hands. Not fun.

    Fox -5 (5)

First birdie of the day for New Zealand's Ryan Fox on the short par-three fifth.

He knocks his towering tee shot just off the back of the green but recovers well, with his putt from 25 feet dropping just as it slowed up.

    Going steady, so far.

Jon Rahm rams in a huge putt.

From 40-odd feet, the Spaniard finds the bottom of the cup on 13 to reach four under.

He's had an eagle today too - on the seventh.

    Del Rey -7 (11)

Alejandro Del Rey is making a move.

Back-to-back birdies around the turn take the Spaniard into the top 10 and within two shots of the lead.

He has a chance from about 20 feet on 11 for a sixth birdie of the day but it's a no-drama par instead.
