Can Rory McIlroy find a spark?

The Northern Irishman is in prime position to attack the back-right pin on six, but his approach is a good 40 foot shy of the hole.

Matt Fitzpatrick's second finishes pin high.

    Neergaard-Petersen -9 (65), Hatton -7 (67)

Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen is done for the day with par at the last for a 65.

It leaves the Dane nicely poised one stroke adrift in a congested leaderboard.

Tyrrell Hatton is two further back after a 67.

  6. McIlroy drops further back of leaderspublished at 19:07 BST 11 July

    McIlroy -7, M. Fitpatrick -10 (5)

A tap-in for par for Matt Fitzpatrick is dropped with ease.

No such comfort for Rory McIlroy, though as his par putt pulls up short and he drops further back.

The 2023 champ is having a rough start to proceedings.

  7. Roy ties at toppublished at 19:06 BST 11 July

    Roy -10 (12)

Room at the top? There is for Kevin Roy.

The American makes it a five-way tie on 10 under with his first gain of the back nine on 12.

He clearly likes this par five - he has birdied it all three days this week.

Lots more player-caddie discussions at the fifth, which is exposed to the worst of the wind.

After deciding on the plan of attack, Harry Diamond cracks open a can of water to dampen Rory McIlroy’s towel.

The Northern Irishman doesn’t like the strike at all and it comes up short of the green. Work to do.

    McIlroy -8, M. Fitpatrick -10 (4)

171 yards, 23 feet of elevation change, par three.

With his tee shots on the fifth... Rory McIlroy duffs it into the short stuff before the green.

An excellent second gives him a decent chance of salvaging par, though.

Matt Fitzpatrick gives himself an outside look at birdie with his tee shot. It's safely on the dancefloor.

  10. Fitzpatrick joins leaders on 10 underpublished at 18:58 BST 11 July

    McIlroy -8, M. Fitpatrick -10 (4)

Ooft, another roll of the ball and Rory McIlroy gets back that dropped shot, but he has to settle for a par.

From just two feet, Matt Fitzpatrick has the chance to join the leaders on double digits under par.

A confident stroke of the ball... and it drops.

We have another joint leader, folks.

  11. Keefer sets -10 targetpublished at 18:55 BST 11 July

    Keefer -10 (64)

Johnny Keefer cannot believe that hasn't dropped.

The hoodie-wearing American looks destined for a closing birdie and can only look to the skies in disbelief as the ball stays out.

Still, he posts a 64 to set the clubhouse target at 10 under.

Matt Fitzpatrick talked earlier this week about being in the form of his life and he shows it off at the fourth.

A perfectly judged shorn-off iron shot finishes just right of the flag and he gets a respectful round of applause as he reaches the green.

Rory McIlroy also has a good look at birdie as he tries to bounce back from that bogey at the third.

A stunning approach from Matt Fitzpatrick into the par-four fourth leaves him just a foot or two for birdie.

    That was magnificent.

Rory McIlroy, not to be outdone, gives himself an eight-footer for his birdie too.

Bob MacIntyre backs off this birdie putt at the fifth after one patron’s cry of “c’mon Bob” distracts him.

There’s a brief glare towards the offending party, but he resets and finds the bottom of the cup to the delight of everyone around the fifth green.

  15. Gotterup joins leaderspublished at 18:47 BST 11 July

    Gotterup -10 (6)

It's now a three-way tie at the top!

Chris Gotterup trickles a lovely meandering putt down the slope and into the hole to make it back-to-back birdies.

  16. McIlroy drops shot after short putt missespublished at 18:45 BST 11 July

    McIlroy -8, M. Fitpatrick -9 (3)

    Oh no. Dearie me.

Just a foot from the hole, Rory McIlroy's par putt misses, and he drops an early shot.

Matt Fitzpatrick rolls his in though, as they head to the fourth tee.

Matt Fitzpatrick has 33 feet for his birdie, and Rory McIlroy winds up roughly the same distance away.

Will either drain their sizeable putts?

Plenty of chat between Matt Fitzpatrick and his caddie on the third tee.

The wind is gusting occasionally which makes the right club choice difficult.

Fitzpatrick doesn’t love his tee shot and neither does Rory McIlroy, who mutters “sit” with his ball mid-flight.

  19. Vilips shares leadpublished at 18:37 BST 11 July

    Vilips -10 (7)

Johnny Keefer now has company at the top of the board.

Step forward Australian Karl Vilips, who drains a 25-foot eagle on the par-five seventh.

It’s difficult to tell sometimes from the television coverage just how treacherous some of these greens are at Renaissance.

The second is a great example. Rory McIlroy’s approach shot is a touch long and it leaves him with a slippery putt, right to left, down the hill.

It ambles its way down over one, two, three ridges before nestling next to the hole.

Perfectly judged and that’s a par.

Matt Fitzpatrick has a much easier putt having landed pin-high and he drains it to join McIlroy at nine under.
