  1. Rahm just two backpublished at 22:37 BST 15 May

Awww, what a lovely piece of imagination from Jordan Spieth. He has 67 yards to the pin at the 11th and walks up to the green to pick a landing spot in the little gulley short of the green.

Then he produces a magical little shot, bumping the ball into the face of the slope to kill the speed and it ends up nine feet away.

    It's a crowd-thriller and deserves a birdie...but he can't deliver! Oh, Jordan.

Jon Rahm does make his birdie, though. It's his second of the day and he moves to three under! He's got the bit between his teeth.

Rory McIlroy overcooks his second from the fairway but is only a roll or two away with his long birdie putt from the back of the green. Great effort but another par.

  2. Hatton toilingpublished at 22:34 BST 15 May

    Schauffele E, Koepka -1,Hatton +5 (11)

The wind looks to have dropped a bit but that doesn't mean anything if you don't hit fairways and greens.

Tyrrell Hatton falls foul of that golden rule with a loose approach that rolls back off the apron into the rough. The best the Englishman can do there is chip 20 feet past and all of a sudden it's another shot frittered away to leave him just outside the projected cut.

  3. Untidy finish for Potgieterpublished at 22:29 BST 15 May

    Potgieter -3 (70)

A stabby little chip by Aldrich Potgieter is tracking nicely towards the hole on the last but his ball sidles by the right edge and with it his chances of saving par. It's going to be an untidy bogey-bogey finish for the South African who goes from leading with two to play, to two off the lead.

Two birdies on the front nine balances his card though and he'll no doubt be chuffed with his work so far.

  4. Spieth slips back againpublished at 22:25 BST 15 May

    McIlroy +2, Rahm -2, Spieth +1 (10)

I've sunk an entire cup of tea while this group's been on the 10th. It's really taking a while.

Anyway, Rory McIlroy gets a hugely fortuitous kick off the tree with his tee shot and his ball scuttles down the fairway. But he doesn't capitalise and two putts for par from the heart of the green after a little show of frustration.

Jon Rahm picks up his par too but it's another bogey for Jordan Spieth. He's two over for his round now and slowly slipping out of the reckoning.

  5. Postpublished at 22:22 BST 15 May

    Potgieter -4 (17)

Aldrich Potgieter has 168 yards to the pin from the fairway bunker on 18. He's got a bit of a lip to clear, which he does, but his ball clips a tree and plummets into the rough well short of the green. Work to do to save par.

And his third shot is not threatening the flag. His ball lands in the centre of the green but races through to the back edge and into more cabbage.

    DeChambeau +10, Aberg +2, Fowler +3 (11)

A birdie on the ninth and a spectacular save on the 10th prove a false dawn for Bryson DeChambeau, who is destined to miss the cut just as he did at the Masters.

The American chips out of the sand at the 11th but a 13-foot putt for par slides past the cup and he is back into double figures with a bogey.

Par holds for Rickie Fowler and Ludvig Aberg.

  7. McNealy takes solo leadpublished at 22:16 BST 15 May

    McNealy -5 (11*)

    Maverick McNealy's flying!

After that birdie at the first, he's just popped in another and has replaced Aldrich Potgieter at five under after the South African's bogey.

Four under for the day and Chris Gotterup's 65 from earlier is under threat.

  8. It's in the sandpublished at 22:14 BST 15 May

    Potgieter -4 (17)

Aldrich Potgieter is on the final tee of his round and perhaps a bit of frustration mixed with some adrenaline as he powers his drive through the fairway and into a bunker that is 330+ yards away. He needs to gather his thoughts on the walk to his ball.

  9. Postpublished at 22:14 BST 15 May

    Schauffele E, Koepka -1,Hatton +4 (10)

The pace of play is, well, a test of everyone's patience and Tyrrell Hatton, Xander Schauffele and Brooks Koepka have been on the 10th longer than it'd take for a high-level athlete to run 10k and do a lap of honour after stopping for selfies.

Hatton and Koepka retain enough concentration to save par but Schauffele gets caught out after leaking his tee shot left and flying the green.

Still at least they are moving again even if it is at a snail's pace.

  10. First bogey for Potgieterpublished at 22:09 BST 15 May

    Potgieter -4 (17)

Uh oh - Aldrich Potgieter just falters coming home with a three-putt bogey on the 17th seeing him drop out of the solo lead and into a three-way tie on four under.

His tee shot on the par three hit the green but some 40 feet away - and his lag putt only makes it to seven feet to leave 'one of those' for par.

He can't drain it so that's a shot gone and his very first bogey of the day, what a time and what a disappointing way for it to come too.

  11. McNealy into secondpublished at 22:05 BST 15 May

    McNealy -4 (10*)

Maverick McNealy rolls in a birdie on the first hole to move to four under and into second place.

It was a great escape from the righr rough from 100 yards down to just 11 feet by the American and he rolls it home for his second birdie of the day to go along with his chip-in eagle and only one bogey.

  12. Birdie response from Leepublished at 22:02 BST 15 May

    Theegala E, MW Lee -2 (11)

Min Woo Lee hits back right away with a birdie on 11 to get back to two under to remain right in the conversation heading down the stretch.

  13. Bogeys for Aberg & Fowlerpublished at 22:01 BST 15 May

    DeChambeau +9, Aberg +2, Fowler +3 (10)

Ludvig Aberg had a slightly up-and-down round yesterday - two birdies and four bogeys - but he's been much more consistent today.

A birdie and eight pars on the front nine and he leaves himself with a tricky 13-foot putt for par on the 10th.

On this occasion the Swede fluffs it and makes his first bogey of the round.

Bryson DeChambeau takes the scenic route to the pin and ends up spectacularly chipping into the hole from off the green to save par.

No such luck for Rickie Fowler who also bogeys the hole to go three over. A promising round from the American is petering away.

  14. Waiting gamepublished at 22:00 BST 15 May

    McIlroy +2, Rahm -2, Spieth E (9)

Pace of play is a talking point this week - it usually is at majors, to be fair - and it's taken this group two hours and 50 minutes to play nine holes.

It's not getting much quicker out there either with a wait on the 10th tee allowing Rory McIlroy to lie down against the sponsors board for what looks like a bit of mid-round meditation.

Probably just trying to banish the bad thoughts after that missed birdie putt on the last.

  15. Another par for Potgieterpublished at 21:59 BST 15 May

    Potgieter -5 (16)

'Just' a par for Aldrich Potgieter on 16, which as a par-five of just 538 yards will always be somewhat of a disappointment for a big hitter such as him.

But after two visits to the rough that's about as good as it was going to get for the leader, who remains one shot ahead with just two holes for him left to play.

  16. Birdie for Brownpublished at 21:57 BST 15 May

    Brown +2 (12*)

Dan Brown moves further away from the cut line with a much-needed birdie at the third, rolling in a 22-footer no less.

His first positive deviation from par today and possibly a turning point for the Englishman.

  17. Chances come and gopublished at 21:51 BST 15 May

    McIlroy +2, Rahm -2, Spieth E (9)

It hasn't always been the case this week, but Rory McIlroy's in perfect position after hammering a 342-yard drive down the par-five ninth.

In between a long iron and five wood for his second, he elects to go for the former and comes up just short of the green. He chooses to putt over the ridge and leaves an eight-footer coming back which he misses.

Just not clinical enough after that excellent drive.

Jon Rahm, also from position A1, takes one of his headcovers off and goes long. He has a speedy bump and run from off the back but he nudges it down to five feet, but it dies left in front of the hole and stays out!

No birdie for Jordan Spieth so that's three rather workmanlike pars from this star-studded group.

  18. Seven for Sahith!published at 21:41 BST 15 May

    Theegala E, MW Lee -1 (10)

Right, let's get through this triple-bogey seven (7) for Sahith Theegala on the 10th hole, which included a lost ball, a drop in the bunker, a chip out, then a wedge onto the green and two putts.

They should've used shotlink as that says his original second shot bounced off a tree and into the left rough, but nobody could find it!

Min Woo Lee does better but still makes a bogey, his second in a row, as both of these two tumble out of contention after a horror show the last few minutes.

  19. Hatton's frustration showspublished at 21:41 BST 15 May

    Schauffele -1, Koepka -1,Hatton +4 (9)

    Tyrrell HattonImage source, Getty Images

Tyrrell Hatton's happy mood didn't last too long. The Englishman is muttering away to himself and it doesn't take a lip reader to work out a couple of his words as he fails to sink a putt for a second consecutive birdie.

Xander Schauffele, who zipped in to four feet with his third has no such problems and taps in his first birdie of the day.

Tom (20:41) is completely wrong. Statistically fairways hit is poorly correlated to scoring. A pro has a 60-yard dispersion and will hit an average of 50% of fairways in a round. Rory may be poor today but the expectation is totally unrealistic. Greens in regulation is what counts.

Seem to remember Rory not driving it well at Augusta but still came up with the goods

Re: Tom, golf is a different sport nowadays. Players like Rory generally go for max distance over accuracy. They can pitch so accurately from 100 yards that it usually doesn’t matter if they’re in the rough. Obviously they don’t want to hit into too many trees though…
