  1. Painful miss for Burnspublished at 23:03 BST 21 June

    Burns -3 (67), Mitchell E (70)

So, a second chance to tie Wyndham Clark at the top.

After a frankly woeful attempt on 17, Sam Burns steps up to his ball on the 72nd green.

He sends it on its way...ohhhh it just sneaks past on the right. That was a great effort, but it's a closing par and a fabulous final round of 67 for the American, who definitely seems a popular figure at Shinnecock.

Missed putts on 17 and 18. Will they come back to haunt him? He'll need some help from the leader.

As for Keith Mitchell, he grabs an interesting slice of US Open history, becoming the first player to shoot four even-par rounds. 70-70-70-70. A fine showing and by far his best finish in a major.

  2. Par for Clarkpublished at 23:01 BST 21 June

    Clark -4, Scheffler E (15)

Nice approach from Wyndham Clark to the 15th green, leaving a 20-foot look for birdie. He takes plenty of time over it but leaves it a foot short - can't say he's left too many putts short this entire week so maybe a bit of nerves here or the first sign of Clark just playing defensively to protect his lead.

Any par right now is pretty good given the circumstances.

  3. Burns beautypublished at 22:59 BST 21 June

    Burns -3 (17)

Sam Burns has 200 yards into the 18th green. It's sitting nicely in the first cut.

That is spectacular! He flirts with the bunker to the left of the green but his ball takes a nice kick to the right and rolls down to 16 feet. Brave shot at a big time.

Does he have one last birdie in him? It would be some moment if he makes three.

I'm wondering how you get to be world no.1 when you can't putt? Scheffler's putting this season has generally been awful from a guy with his ability

    Martin, Manchester

It's definitely a chink in his armour, but to be honest this season, before this week, he was ranked 21st on the PGA Tour for putting, which is nothing to snort at.

  5. Fleetwood bogeys the 18thpublished at 22:54 BST 21 June

    Fleetwood +2 (71), Schauffele +2 (72)

A bogey at the last for Tommy Fleetwood means he closes his latest quest for a first major with at two over par.

Consistent with rounds of 70 71 70 and 71 this week, he has never truly been in contention.

His eyes will turn to his home town of Birkdale and The Open, less than four weeks away.

As for Xander Schauffele? Well, of course, he's finished in the top 15. As he has done at the 10 tournaments he has played at.

  6. Has Scottie's Grand Slam gone?published at 22:52 BST 21 June

    Clark -4, Scheffler E (14)

    US OpenImage source, Getty Images

Even the great Scottie Scheffler just lost his cool on the 14th as he hammered his birdie putt at the hole - he's had his chance but could that be the end of his challenge?

Wyndham Clark hasn't exactly looked that solid at times and there's still some tricky holes to go - plus Scheffler birdied 15 and 16 yesterday.

  7. Postpublished at 22:52 BST 21 June

    Kim -1 (15)

Tom Kim keeps himself in the conversation by holing a nerve-jangling four-footer for par at the 15th.

    Par-five coming up.

  8. Fitz finishes four overpublished at 22:51 BST 21 June

    M Fitzpatrick +4 (73), Morikawa +3 (72)

    Matt FitzpatrickImage source, Getty Images

Disappointment as Collin Morikawa and Matt Fitzpatrick finish up at the 18th green.

Both were within a sniff as they teed off, especially given how Wyndham Clark has come back to the field but they've not given themselves a chance.

A two-over 72 for Morikawa and a three-over 73 for Fitzpatrick leave them both out of the top 15.

  9. Postpublished at 22:51 BST 21 June

    Burns -3 (17)

Sam Burns hammers his drive at 18, but it bounds through the fairway and into the first cut.

Not the end of the world - it looks a half-decent lie - but a bit of a bad break at this late stage.

  10. 'No authority' from Burnspublished at 22:49 BST 21 June

    Burns -3 (17)

    Iain Carter
BBC golf correspondent on BBC Radio 5 Live

Just no authority to that putt.

It was downhill and delicate but if you're going to win these things you have to seize the moment.

He was brave with the tee shot but if he has got a weakness, it's when he is putting under huge pressure.

What happened there gives a lot of evidence to support that argument.

  11. Close call for Clarkpublished at 22:48 BST 21 June

    Clark -4, Scheffler E (14)

Wyndham Clark's long range putt for birdie shaves the right edge of the hole, it doesn't catch the lip but it's so close to hitting the target.

Pars are good for the leader though.

And after leaving so many putts short this time Scottie Scheffler guns his birdie try and that does catch the lip, but at that speed it has no chance of dropping.

To make matters worse he then misses the three footer coming back! That bogey slips him back to level par and four behind Clark with four holes to play.

  12. Burns misses golden chancepublished at 22:46 BST 21 June

    Burns -3 (17)

    Here we go, then.

One of the biggest putts of Sam Burns' career. It's actually a little longer than I first thought (deceptive camera angle etc) at nine feet but still a wonderful opportunity.

He's missed! Ohhh, what a chance that was. That wasn't even close to be honest.

There's no finer feeling than executing shots when required.

Down the stretch at a major championship is just about the ultimate examination.

Sam Burns will have got a lot of belief from the way he has played these past two holes.

    He looks a terrific player.

To be honest, if Burns wins, it will be justice for the lousy decision against him last year by the officials when his ball was clearly sitting in lying water so I’m rooting for him. A good guy too

    Jason, Walsall

Jason's referring to the refusal of officials at the US Open at Oakmont last year to give him water relief in his final round.

Burns was in the final group remember and the weather was horrific.

Very different in the baking sunshine this year!

  15. Burns sets up another birdie lookpublished at 22:39 BST 21 June

    Burns -3 (16)

Can Sam Burns work the wind at 17?

What a shot! It lands in the heart of the green and scoots forward to around six feet for a birdie two.

    Oh my.

  16. Why are some supporters anti Clark?published at 22:37 BST 21 June

    Clark -4, Scheffler -1 (13)

    Wyndham ClarkImage source, Getty Images

We've been asked for a bit of context on why the fans are treating Wyndham Clark differently.

Can't speak for them but his behaviour at Oakmont last year when he smashed up a locker did little for his reputation.

He's had a few notable incidents since breaking through a few years ago that have not endeared him to the golfing public but in fairness he has fronted up to all of it and sought redemption.

There's probably a bit of love and support for Scottie Scheffler linked in with it as well.

We've been saying it feels a bit like an away Ryder Cup for the leader, which cannot be easy.

  17. Shinnecock slopespublished at 22:37 BST 21 June

    Clark -4, Scheffler -1 (13)

It's hard to convey just how slopey some of these greens are at Shinnecock Hills - just take a look at the 11th below as Scottie Scheffler putts down that huge hill...

  18. Burns moves within onepublished at 22:36 BST 21 June

    Burns -3 (16)

Sam Burns holds a wedge up against the wind at 16. Good shot. He'd like it a little closer, but it's a 17-footer for birdie.

With only two holes to go after this - and given Wyndham Clark still has this hole to come - he has to give this a run, which I appreciate is easier said than done on these sun-baked greens.

Here he goes. It's in! A huge roar goes up as Burns reduces the arrears to just one. He's loving this challenge.

  19. Miss! Clark's lead just twopublished at 22:33 BST 21 June

    Clark -4, Scheffler -1 (13)

Ouch! Wyndham Clark is glad Scottie Scheffler's putt didn't land, as moments later his par save slides by the hole and that's a bogey for the leader - who now only leads by two shots.

Again that Clark miss is greeted by some cheers from the Shinnecock fans...

Hideous behaviour from the “fans”. What a difference from the class on show at the Masters.

    Paul, Anglesey

Hope Clark holds on. New York golf attendees (they don’t deserve the moniker of fan) are the worst as proven today and at Bethpage Black last year. Classless. Whatever they want, I want the opposite!
