  1. Fitz tumbles out of contentionpublished at 19:27 BST 21 June

    M Fitzpatrick +3, Morikawa E (4)

A first par of the day for Collin Morikawa at the fourth as he consolidates at level par.

It's not so pleasing for Matt Fitzpatrick though, who is toppling away after bogeying two of his first four holes.

I'll probably step away from covering Matt too much now, unless he rediscovers a bit of form.

  3. Another birdie for Fleetwood!published at 19:21 BST 21 June

Ohh we've been here before with Tommy Fleetwood on Sunday at Shinnecock.

On that day he birdied two and three to fire up a heater that carried him to a barely believable -7 for his round.

Well, he's just repeated the feat after a majestic iron into the third green leaves four feet for birdie.

Which he buries. Into a share of second!

  4. Burns the edgepublished at 19:20 BST 21 June

    Burns -1, Mitchell E (2)

After a tap-in birdie at the first, Sam Burns hits a pearler into the par-three second, but his putt from 26 feet burns (sorry) the right edge.

Just a par, but he's looking good early doors.

  5. Will surprise pairing put pressure on Clark?published at 19:20 BST 21 June

    Theegala -1, Kim -1 (19:19 BST)

    Sahith TheegalaImage source, Getty Images

Not many people would have had this as the penultimate pairing on championship Sunday.

But Sahith Theegala's stunning approach at 18 yesterday gave him a tap-in birdie for a round of 70 that also included 16 pars and a bogey. Steady stuff.

Superb tee-to-green this week but the putter has been Theegala's enemy. If he can find some inspiration on the greens, who knows?

The American has Tom Kim for company today. The South Korean is celebrating his 24th birthday, but he'll need to play the round of his life before he can eat some cake out of an US Open trophy.

  6. Morikawa birdies thirdpublished at 19:16 BST 21 June

Collin Morikawa is keeping my keyboard busy.

He's just birdied the third after one of those stunning iron shots he's built his game on sets up three feet.

Is the two-time major champion making a charge or not?

I spent my 30th birthday sampling many fine beers at Ilkley Beer Festival. I certainly needed a 9 iron to prop me up after that evening!

Henry is celebrating his 30th birthday paying for Wifi on his flight so he can watch Scottie bring it home!

    Henry, Amersham

I'm not sure if Henry is talking about himself in the third person there.

  8. Brilliant Burns lights up opening holepublished at 19:11 BST 21 June

    Burns -1, Mitchell E (1)

Sam Burns is off to a flyer!

He barely needed his deadly putter after knocking his approach from 148 yards stone dead.

That's it, Burnsy. Get the crowd fired up nice and early.

  9. Rose with back-to-back birdiespublished at 19:10 BST 21 June

    Rose +2 (12)

Justin Rose makes back-to-back birdies on the 12th.

Is the Englishman finding some momentum? That's two putts from just over 10 feet drained in successive holes and he's now in a tie for 14th along with his compatriots, Aaron Rai (who has just watched his tee shot run off the seventh green) and Tyrrell Hatton.

  10. Brilliant birdie for Fleetwoodpublished at 19:09 BST 21 June

    Fleetwood E, Schauffele E (2)

The second is a par three brute at 255 yards (par three!) and playing as the hardest hole on the course today.

Tell that to Tommy Fleetwood as he downs a 32-footer for birdie! Outstanding.

Xander Schauffele is inches from following him in, and has to settle for par.

  11. 'Who the heck is Sam Stevens?'published at 19:06 BST 21 June

    Stevens -1, Grillo E (19:08 BST)

    Sam StevensImage source, Getty Images

This was a nice little exchange between Sam Stevens and a journalist at his press conference after his round yesterday.

    Q. Sam, you've been around for a while, obviously, but I think a lot of people are going to turn on their televisions tomorrow and say...

SAM STEVENS: "Who the heck is Sam Stevens?"

    Q. Yeah, so who the heck is Sam Stevens?

SAM STEVENS: "I don't know, I'm an average PGA Tour player, I guess. Yeah, I don't know. That's a good question. I'm just a golfer."

    Talk about self-awareness!

  13. A pairing of top performerspublished at 19:01 BST 21 June

    Stevens -1, Grillo E (19:08 BST)

US Open GrilloImage source, Getty Images

Emiliano Grillo is third in the putting stats for the week at Shinnecock Hills, and shot a stellar 67 yesterday in some tough conditions.

Another one of those from the Argentinian will no doubt push him up the leaderboard, but he'll need to go even lower to trouble Wyndham Clark.

Sam Stevens has been the best iron player in the field this week, which is quite some effort considering the players taking part, as he's showing that perhaps he's more than just an average PGA Tour player...

  14. Pars for Fleetwood & Schauffelepublished at 19:01 BST 21 June

    Fleetwood +1, Schauffele E (1)

Both Xander Schauffele and Tommy Fleetwood are safely aboard the putting surface at the first but neither have particularly promising birdie chances.

A pair of long birdie efforts later cosy up to the hole and they each nudge in for par.

  15. Postpublished at 18:59 BST 21 June

    Hatton +2 (10)

Tyrrell Hatton plays a beautiful shot out of the greenside bunker on the 10th as he gets up and down for par.

The Englishman reached the turn on 33, with an eagle on the fifth and a birdie on the eighth cancelling out a bogey on the third when he took three with his putter.

Hatton is yet to win a major and is now in a tie for 14th just outside contention.

  16. Immediate bogey for Morikawapublished at 18:59 BST 21 June

    M Fitzpatrick +2, Morikawa -+1 (2)

If you want to make a charge on a Sunday at a US Open, par putts from six feet are absolute must-make.

But Collin Morikawa has missed his at the second and immediately gifts back the shot he gained at the first.

Matt Fitzpatrick cards a tidy par.

  17. Can Burns banish Oakmont demons?published at 18:59 BST 21 June

    Burns E, Mitchell E (18:57 BST)

    Sam BurnsImage source, Getty Images

Gutsy showing from Sam Burns this week. The 54-hole leader at last year's US Open, he was denied relief from temporary water at a rain-lashed Oakmont, which led to a double bogey that wrecked his hopes of landing a first major.

The world number 30 has been in good form recently. He finished tied seventh at the Masters and fourth at the Memorial a few weeks ago.

An excellent putter, he needs a minor-miracle (don't they all?) to threaten Wyndham Clark's lead.

Burns is out with Keith Mitchell, who is on track to beat his best major finish, a tie for 20th at the 2023 US Open.

The smartly-dressed Tennessee native ranks third in putting this week and has shot three rounds of 70. Steady.

  19. An elite two-ballpublished at 18:52 BST 21 June

    Fleetwood +1, Schauffele E (18:46 BST)

Tommy Fleetwood and Xander SchauffeleImage source, Getty Images

Eight years ago at Shinnecock Hills, Tommy Fleetwood was a missed putt away from a 62 in the final round and a play-off with winner Brooks Koepka.

You feel it'll take something similar to get close today. Channel those memories Tommy!

He's alongside Xander Schauffele - a dark horse coming into the weekend after his four-under 66 on Friday but he stalled big time yesterday.

Back in that 2018 tournament, he finished in a tie for sixth, and is a bit of a US Open specialist.

These two could inspire each other to go low, or disappear from contention entirely.

  20. Perfect start for Morikawapublished at 18:47 BST 21 June

    M Fitzpatrick +2, Morikawa E (1)

That'll do nicely for Collin Morikawa over at the first.

The lemon-shirted American is seven shots off Wyndham Clark but sinking a 26-foot birdie gets him to level par and moving in the right direction.

Poor start for partner Matt Fitzpatrick though as he misses from four-and-a-half feet and drops a shot.
