  1. Matsuyama making movespublished at 20:15 BST 12 April

    Matsuyama -7 (16)

2021 Masters winner Hideki Matsuyama is having himself a day out there.

He's just birdied 16 to move five-under for the day - with two bogeys on the card - and within five of the lead.

Too far back to win at this stage but it will be another strong showing for the Japanese player at Augusta.

  2. Battling Rose saves parpublished at 20:13 BST 12 April

    Day -8, Rose -8 (4)

Justin Rose is making heavy weather of his first four holes. He goes straight at the pin on the 260-yard Flowering Crab Apple and scoots through the green.

He then leaves himself an 8-footer for par after getting the pace of his second all wrong.

The Englishman is equal to that but it's been a battle.

  3. 'McIlroy - genius out of the bunkers'published at 20:11 BST 12 April

    McIlroy -12 (3)

It’s a very underrated part of McIlroy’s game.

He’s an absolute genius out of the bunkers.

  4. McIlroy joins Young at the toppublished at 20:11 BST 12 April

McIlroy draws a clean lie in the bunker. He gives it an almighty thump and leaves himself another appealing uphill putt for a birdie.

In it goes! That was a great roll. He opens his account for the day and moves to -12.

Young bumps his pitch into the bank and the ball feeds down the slope, but it stays high, leaving a rapid putt from the back.

Not this time - and he leaves a four-footer back up the hill which he pours in with minimal fuss.

  5. Burns in bother with another bogeypublished at 20:07 BST 12 April

    Burns -8, Lowry -9 (3)

Sam Burns is in big bother after following his double bogey on the second with a bogey on the third - this time courtesy of trying to get too cute on the bunker shot and seeing his ball roll all the way back into the sand off that nasty slope.

It's just a short hole but it can be so difficult from the wrong spot - especially with this front flag they're using today.

  6. Bogey for Cantlaypublished at 20:07 BST 12 April

    Cantlay -6, Henley -7 (6)

Patrick Cantlay is apparently the only player to hit over 1,000 balls on the practice range at the Masters this week.

But that counts for nowt when he finds the wrong landing spot on the par-three sixth.

The American finds himself putting from over 60 feet for birdie and slips 13 feet past.

And that brings his first bogey of the day.

  7. Postpublished at 20:05 BST 12 April

    Young -12, McIlroy -11 (2)

Lady luck has shone on Cameron Young the past few days and he's just received another tremendously fortuitous break as his ball collides with the trees down the right of the third and ricochets back into the middle of the fairway.

No lucky bounce for Rory McIlroy though. His drive careens into the bunker just short of the green. That's going to be a horribly difficult second up the slope.

  9. Bogey for Rosepublished at 19:58 BST 12 April

    Day -8, Rose -8 (3)

Justin Rose has made errors on his first two holes. And he now makes another on the third, completely misjudging a bump and run on to the green and watching his ball roll straight back down the slope towards him.

His second effort isn't much better with his ball sellotaping itself to the ridge and it ends up costing him a stroke.

  10. 'McIlroy has ability to make so many birdies'published at 19:57 BST 12 April

    McIlroy -11 (2)

    Trish Johnson
Former Europe Solheim Cup player on BBC Radio 5 Live

McIlroy has got so much ability to make so many birdies and the way he’s putting you have to think that on a day like today he’s going to make four or five birdies.

It’s just he needs to keep the other numbers off his card.

That’s why he needs to drive the ball well.

  11. Par for Schefflerpublished at 19:56 BST 12 April

    Scheffler -9, Li -8 (4)

A par isn't a bad score on four, the long par three, as the green looks rock solid today so anything on the putting surface is a good result.

Both men get pars here and move on.

  12. Young takes solo leadpublished at 19:56 BST 12 April

    Young -12, McIlroy -11 (2)

McIlroy has a wedge in hand for his third to the par-five second after splashing out the fairway bunker. He shouts "go" but it's good for distance and settles nine feet away.

He leaves the putt high though and that's another good chance gone.

From 326 yards, Young lashed one down the hill but he short sides himself and has the bunker in between his ball and the flag, which is perched only a few paces beyond the sand.

He just about makes it over the bunker but drains the putt! What a four.

  13. Birdie for Lowrypublished at 19:53 BST 12 April

    Burns -9, Lowry -9 (2)

He's got wonderful hands has Shane Lowry, as he showcases for the umpteenth time by flicking a wedge across the second green and lining up a birdie to get him back to nine under.

Sam Burns has had a nightmare here though with a double-bogey seven, on one of the easiest holes on the course, seeing him tumble back to join Lowry on nine under.

You can't afford doubles on Masters Sunday if you want to challenge.

  14. Hatton making movespublished at 19:49 BST 12 April

    Hatton -7 (9)

Tyrrell Hatton follows his eagle on the seventh with a birdie on the eighth after bailing out right and then clipping to seven feet.

He now has another chance to pick up a stroke on the ninth but there's not enough juice on his putt.

  15. Can runner-up Rose finally win?published at 19:49 BST 12 April

    Rose -9 (2)

Justin Rose at The MastersImage source, Getty Images

Justin Rose has been runner-up at The Masters three times, only Tom Weiskopf - who finished second four times in seven years - has more without winning a Green Jacket.

Rose is also just the second man after Ben Hogan to lose two play-offs at Augusta National, losing last year of course to Rory McIlroy but also to Sergio Garcia in 2017.

The Englishman has the most first-round leads at The Masters with five and more overall leads (11) than anyone else without a win.

Can the 45-year-old finally get over the line in a tournament he always challenges in? If anyone deserves a Green Jacket it's Rose.

  16. 'Not the worst place'published at 19:47 BST 12 April

    McIlroy -11 (1)

    Trish Johnson
Former Europe Solheim Cup player on BBC Radio 5 Live

Not the worst place on that right hand bunker, the left one is not so good.

[McIlroy] can get it close enough to get an easy approach in.

  17. Postpublished at 19:47 BST 12 April

    McIlroy -11, Young -11 (1)

The wind has certainly picked up today. For the second time already, Rory McIlroy backs off after a poorly-timed gust.

He smacks his driver at the par-five second and finds the bunker.

Cameron Young has the three-wood out again and finds the fairway, but it's a long way back.

  18. Postpublished at 19:43 BST 12 April

    Day -8, Rose -9 (2)

Justin Rose leaves his chip onto the par-five second miles short. Well 27 feet. Still it's hardly ideal.

The 2013 US Open champion would have expected something much easier for birdie and now slides four feet past before thankfully making the return.

  19. Scheffler just two backpublished at 19:41 BST 12 April

    Scheffler -9, Li -8 (3)

After that missed chance on the second, Scottie Scheffler is right back at it on the third, smacking a driver up to the greenside bunker on the short par-four third, then playing a neat escape and rolling in the putt for a three.

Mustard from the world number one.

Li also gets his birdie here as he starts bogey-birdie-birdie in another lively card - the Chinese star hit four birdies in a row on Friday and turned in five under yesterday so he's capable of getting hot.

  20. Early chance missed for Rorypublished at 19:39 BST 12 April

    McIlroy -11, Young -11 (1)

McIlroy was loose with his wedges yesterday but he's dialled in early today. He nearly pitches into the hole from 155 yards. It takes a firm first bounce but feeds back down off the ridge.

Can he lay down an early marker? He backs off because of the wind and then hits it woefully short. That had no chance. Par.

Young catches ball first in the bunker. Clean strike and it's safely onboard too.

He must putt through the ridge, though. This is tricky, downhill left-to-right. Decent effort but a smidge short and that's a four too.
