Sprint qualifying on Friday makes up the grid for the sprint
race on Saturday.
Only the top eight finishers score points, with eight points
awarded for first place down to one point for eighth, which will get added to
the overall drivers' championship standings.
At the third sprint at the Canadian Grand Prix last month,
polesitter George Russell beat world champion Lando Norris and Mercedes
team-mate Kimi Antonelli to victory in Montreal.
British rookie Arvid Lindblad picked up the final point in
eighth for Racing Bulls.
At the top of the constructors' championship, Mercedes are 98 points clear of second-placed Ferrari after eight rounds of the 2026 season, while McLaren stay in third and Red Bull move on to 115 points thanks to Max Verstappen's podium finish at their home race in Austria.
Liam Lawson and Brit rookie Arvid Lindblad scored double points for sixth-placed Racing Bulls - who are 13 points off Alpine in fifth - last time out but the pair are starting just outside the top eight today in ninth and 10th respectively.
George Russell's Austrian Grand Prix victory a week ago means the top of the drivers' championship is an all-Mercedes affair once again, with teenager Kimi Antonelli leading Briton Russell by 40 points.
With Lewis Hamilton starting on sprint pole today, the Ferrari driver can put pressure back on Russell from third place. The gap between the former Silver Arrows team-mates is just six points, with Russell lining up in fifth spot.
The top eight drivers in the standings are all starting in the points places at Silverstone, so with fine margins between the likes of Oscar Piastri, Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc, there could be some movement in the table before main qualifying begins later on.
Hello! Welcome to our coverage of the sprint race and qualifying at the British Grand Prix.
Lewis Hamilton has dominated the track action so far this weekend.
The seven-time world champion was the fastest driver in the sole practice session on Friday and will be on pole for the sprint race. He holds the record for the most wins at Silverstone. Can he add another win to his tally?
Or will current championship leader Kimi Antonelli take the chequered flag?
Lights go green for the sprint race at 12:00 BST.
Qualifying for the main race will take place a little later on, Q1 goes green at 16:00 BST.
I do love this photo of the British drivers, reminds me of my favourite boyband as a teen.
