Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli took pole position for the British Grand Prix with another impressive performance to beat the Ferraris and team-mate George Russell.

The Italian, who won the sprint race at Silverstone earlier on Saturday, beat Ferrari's Charles Leclerc by 0.175 seconds.

Lewis Hamilton was third in the second Ferrari, ahead of George Russell, who was 0.370secs slower than his 19-year-old team-mate.

Isack Hadjar took fifth, beating team-Max Verstappen for only the second time all year when both finished qualifying, the Dutchman split from the Frenchman by McLaren's Lando Norris.

McLaren's Oscar Piastri led the Racing Bulls of British rookie Arvid Lindblad and Liam Lawson to complete the top 10.

  2. British GP build-up from 14:00 BST on Sundaypublished at 18:07 BST

Kimi Antonelli celebrates pole position with his dad, MarcoImage source, Getty Images

Kimi Antonelli shared this lovely moment with his dad, Marco, after claiming pole position for tomorrow's British Grand Prix. It's going to take something special to stop the 19-year-old from not only taking victory at Silverstone, but also extending his advantage at the top of the drivers' championship, which now stands at 43 points following his sprint win.

Another Silverstone pole wasn't meant to be for nine-time winner Lewis Hamilton but can the incentive of stretching that record to a history-making 10 victories give him an extra push from third on the grid? He'll need to find a way past Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc first, though, before he can take the fight to his young rival.

Thanks for joining us today, folks. We'll be back on Sunday with build-up to what we hope will be another cracking race - main one and Lego one - from 14:00 BST.

    Lights out is at 15:00.

    See you then!

  3. 'Not the easiest session' - Lindbladpublished at 18:05 BST

    LindbladImage source, Getty Images

Racing Bulls' Arvid Lindblad after qualifying in ninth: "I just said thank you to all the guys in the garage, it was not the easiest session. It was a real team effort to be here."

"I think the team have done a good job. The car is competitive. It's been a few weekends now where we've performed really well in the qualifiers, our focus is going to be keeping that in the race. Our team are going to keep working on the car."

On racing at Silverstone: "It's been very fun, the fans here make it extremely special. The grass along every straight was full but, the most exciting thing is the track. When we get so many sets of tyres on such a high speed circuit where an F1 car really comes to life, it's a really enjoyable feeling. It's been better than I expected."

  4. 'Poor from McLaren's side' - Norrispublished at 18:04 BST

    Lando NorrisImage source, Getty Images

McLaren's Lando Norris, speaking after qualifying in sixth: "There are no excuses for now. This is quite poor from our side. A track like this is to do with efficiency of car, it's just understanding the car and it's dynamics. Two teams understand it better than everyone else, that's why they are ahead.

"I think we can't just develop the car, we have to catch up, it's a mixture of a lot of things. It's stuff that will take time, the team know that time is not on our side. We've got to understand the car now and bring parts to it quickly and quicker than every other team.

"There's nothing we can do now, we just have to maximise our performance."

  5. 'A pretty big handful to drive the car' - Piastripublished at 18:01 BST

    Oscar PiastriImage source, Getty Images

McLaren's Oscar Piastri, who will start the race in eighth, speaking to Sky Sports: "Just struggled a lot with rear grip. We thought we made some sensible changes in qualifying but they just didn't have the impact we were hoping for, I guess. A bit of a surprise as to why it has been so tricky this whole weekend. We have been battling with the balance of the car for the whole weekend which normally I feel like we just lack grip and downforce. This weekend it has been a pretty big handful to drive the car. Hopefully we can see what we can do tomorrow and make it a little bit nicer."

On what McLaren's realistic target is: "I think trying to beat the Red Bulls is probably the main opportunity. Maybe we can beat the Ferraris but I am not particularly optimistic, so we will see what we get. The first few laps of sprint was chaos. Hopefully we can get amongst it and hang on from there."

  6. Antonelli 'pleasure to watch' - Wolffpublished at 17:56 BST

    Kimi AntonelliImage source, Getty Images

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff on Kimi Antonelli to Sky Sports: "It's impressive how he's calm and kills with a smile. It's a pleasure to watch. There's no mistakes, he's really performing, considering it's his second year, at such a high level."

On Friday's performance: "We were not happy with the car's performance in the corners, we changed it a bit overnight and I think that made the difference."

On Antonelli being compared to the greats: "He hasn't won the world championship yet. He's being compared to the great ones, he has all the traits but he needs to show the results.

"He had a really bad run last year, nine races in a row without any points. He was probably victim to the pressure and new environment. He was just 18. In that way, it's remarkable how he came out this year. He comes out like an experienced driver but he's just 19."

  7. 'We have been struggling with straight-line speed' - Russellpublished at 17:53 BST

George Russell and Kimi AntonelliImage source, Getty Images

Mercedes' George Russell, who will start the race from fourth, speaking to Sky Sports about the crash in Q1: "I don't know, I mean I have raced here for 12 years and I have never locked up once in that corner before. We made some changes to the set-up but it was probably more extreme than we thought. I don't know what happened. It was weird.

"This whole weekend we have been struggling with straight-line speed, we don't know why. Compared to all the other Mercedes, losing, look at the speed traps, 6kph in the last sector, 3kph in the middle sector. There is a couple of tenths over a lap, compared to all the other Mercedes cars, so I don't really know why that is. The team are working super hard to try and understand.

"This morning we thought we found the problem because it was there yesterday but it wasn't the issue so not making things easier. We will just keep working."

  8. 'Hopefully we can do a good race' - Antonellipublished at 17:49 BST

More from Mercedes' pole sitter Kimi Antonelli: "For sure, it is not going to be easy. I have got two Ferraris behind me and for sure they are going to work together but their pace is good but ours is stronger in the sprint race. Hopefully we can keep that tomorrow. Hopefully we can do a good race."

  10. 'We will do our best' - Hamiltonpublished at 17:42 BST

    HamiltonImage source, Getty Images

Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton who will start third at the British Grand Prix on Sunday: "Am I satisfied? Of course not, I'm P3. But I am happy to be up here, both these guys did a great job today. Charles has been making good improvements. We just didn't have the pace unfortunately over the Mercedes. It has been a thing for a while but we are slowly closing the gap and to have us both up here is great for the team."

On the race and whether he has a chance to put pressure on Mercedes: "It is definitely great to have us both up here. Because that means hopefully, whether or not we can fully keep up with Kimi, we will see tomorrow but hopefully we can play with the strategy and work as a team to try to topple them. We will do our best for sure."

  11. 'I'm happy with the P2' - Leclercpublished at 17:38 BST

    LeclercImage source, Getty Images

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc after qualifying in second: "I'm pleased. It's been a few tough races. The feeling has been not quite right, struggled to put everything together, sometimes we couldn't score points. To be back, it's a good feeling. There's been so much work behind the scenes. Today is the first time I had it back. It's a good thing but I've struggled to be consistent. It's only the beginning.

"At the moment, I'm trying to look at a bit of everything. I've been losing a bit of time, not as much pace, I've looked at everything. We've worked really well. I'm happy with the P2, would've liked to be on pole but Kimi deserved it, he had a really good lap."

  12. 'It all came together' - Antonellipublished at 17:33 BST

    AntonelliImage source, Getty Images

Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli who will be on pole for the British Grand Prix on Sunday: "I was a bit stressed because I never really like going first for the last run but the last lap was very tidy, I have to be honest. It all came together. It was very tricky with the wind because it was very gusty, unpredictable. We built our way through qualifying and to bring the pole home is very satisfying."

On the changes made between the sprint and qualifying: "No, we did not change the car at all. It was just about differential, brake migration, driving. We worked around it and we managed to find a good setting that helped me to progress though qualifying."

At my first British Grand Prix and I'm struck by how Lewis Hamilton is the only show in town for the crowd here. Huge applause whenever he laps, and none for any other driver.
