This is the venue now that can host a grand prix and provide everything that is needed because the demands for F1 has gone through the roof. We need to be able to cater for the fans, corporate guests and sponsors and guests for the teams.

The circuit itself is fast, it always has been. it is a fast sweeping circuit, with high grip. We have to use the hardest tyres in the Pirelli range to withstand the loads that goes through the cars on the circuit.

Nico Hulkenberg is on a set of medium tyres and the German, who celebrated his first ever Formula 1 podium at Silverstone last season, is currently fourth on the timesheets.

World champion flies past his Landostand to big cheers but the world champion can't find the pace to match Charles Leclerc just yet. Third place for the McLaren driver.

Yellow flag - it looks like George Russell has crashed.

Sergio Perez gets us off the mark in this opening qualifying session with 1:32.199 for Cadillac. The Haas boys are up next, with Ollie Bearman going quicker than team-mate Esteban Ocon.

Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton has called the Ferrari phone already to let his pit wall know his car isn't feeling as smooth in this Q1 session. He crosses the line and goes second, more than tenth off his team-mate Charles Leclerc, who goes top.

Lewis must be favourite, he looks hungry, the Ferrari is a Saturday specialist and my goodness did he squeeze every ounce of magic out of yesterday.

Right then. Lewis Hamilton has softs on, as does his Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc.

Caros Sainz is also a soft runner but the Spaniard, who was winner here a few years ago, locks up early in the Williams and aborts his lap.

The fans are ready for this one but it is blustery out there.

Pirelli has brought along the hardest tyres in the range for this weekend's British Grand Prix, with the C1 as the hard, C2 as the medium and C3 as the soft compound.

    Q1 is green.

  9. Can Hamilton beat Antonelli again?published at 15:57 BST 4 July

In Friday's sprint qualifying, the gap between polesitter Lewis Hamilton and teenager Kimi Antonelli was just 0.011 seconds. Seven-time world champion Hamilton has agreed with 1992 title winner Nigel Mansell that the passionate Silverstone crowd can boost a home driver by a couple of tenths, so can that support deliver Hamilton his first main pole position since the Hungarian Grand Prix for Mercedes in 2023?

For Antonelli, his second season in Formula 1 has produced four poles so far, with his last one secured around the famous streets of Monaco in May.

Just to make us all feel old, when 41-year-old Hamilton celebrated his first British Grand Prix pole position in 2007, Antonelli was still a month shy of his first birthday.

  11. 'Difficult' for Leclerc to overtakepublished at 15:54 BST 4 July

    Charles LeclercImage source, Getty Images

Today's sprint race with this year's new cars has given us a glimpse of what we can expect for a full 52 laps of Silverstone tomorrow, with battery deployment, energy recovery and boost and overtake modes making for an interesting 'yo-yo' spectacle.

Charles Leclerc finished fifth earlier on and explained to Sky Sports how he felt his Ferrari handled these first 17 laps of the weekend.

"The pace wasn't too bad but the tricky thing is if we're in a fight, we're very vulnerable because we have a very different deployment from others," said Leclerc. "So it was very difficult for me to overtake.

"I was on my way into Turn 15 and I was very, very slow compared to the cars around - I mean, Max [Verstappen] was even slower, to be honest. But there was just huge differences and there have been quite a few races that we haven't seen with this amount of differences between cars, which makes the fighting a bit tricky.

"But yeah, starting a bit ahead and getting a good start will be a big help, so tomorrow we will try to focus on that."

In the constructors' championship, Mercedes are 100 points clear of second-placed Ferrari after chalking up another victory this season, with defending champions McLaren in third on 176 points and Red Bull 49 points behind them in fourth.

The midfield battle between Alpine and Racing Bulls is now down to 12 points thanks to Liam Lawson's eighth place and one point in the shorter race.

The points are only small for finishing in the top eight in the sprint but every little helps when it comes to a maiden world title bid.

Kimi Antonelli's latest victory - he's the youngest driver ever to win a sprint - has moved him 43 points clear of Mercedes team-mate George Russell before tomorrow's main event at Silverstone.

Lewis Hamilton is creeping up on second-placed Russell from third spot, though, with the Ferrari driver narrowing the gap on his former Silver Arrows team-mate to four points.

Lando Norris is now up to fourth place and holds a two and three-point buffer to Charles Leclerc and McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri respectively.

Liam Lawson had to make a trip to see stewards after the race following a close call with Red Bull's Isack Hadjar. But the Racing Bulls driver, who finished eighth, gets to keep his one point, moving him on to 31 points.

Kimi Antonelli had to bide his time for a few laps before he could execute an overtake on the Ferrari of Lewis Hamilton but once the pair had reached the Hangar Straight - and he had enough juice saved up in the battery - the Mercedes driver pounced into the lead and didn't look back.

"Tough race to keep the Mercedes behind, as I said it might be," Hamilton said after the sprint. "And with it being so windy today, big headwind down the back straight, he came flying past. I didn't have anything left."

World champion Lando Norris made a great start to his home sprint event, rising to third place from sixth on the grid - and also briefly passing Antonelli for second. Norris came out on top in a battle with George Russell and Max Verstappen and said he was "pleasantly surprised" with McLaren's performance.

    Top eight

    1. Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) - 8pts

    2. Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari) - 7

    3. Lando Norris (McLaren) - 6

    4. George Russell (Mercedes) - 5

    5. Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) - 4

    6. Max Verstappen (Red Bull) - 3

    7. Oscar Piastri (McLaren) - 2

    8. Liam Lawson (Racing Bulls) - 1

Hello, folks. Lewis Hamilton started on pole position for the sprint race earlier on but any hopes of a British winner to start Saturday at Silverstone off with a bang were dashed with an overtake by championship leader Kimi Antonelli.

The Italian teenager secured his first sprint victory from second on the grid, ahead of Hamilton and world champion Lando Norris, to extend his advantage at the top of the drivers' championship to 43 points.

With the shorter race in the bank, attention now turns to qualifying for Sunday's main 52-lap grand prix. Ferrari grabbed the first pole on offer yesterday through Hamilton's stunning lap but the margin was small to Mercedes' Antonelli.

Can the Silverstone crowd propel home hero Hamilton to a second front-row spot of the weekend? Or has the momentum shifted to his younger rival?

Fun fact: The stilt walker on the left of this picture is my old neighbour, Chloe.

Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli caught and passed Lewis Hamilton to win an action-packed sprint race at the British Grand Prix.

While McLaren's Lando Norris, Mercedes' George Russell and Red Bull's Max Verstappen staged a frantic place-swapping scrap in the opening laps at Silverstone, Antonelli bided his time before homing in on Hamilton at the front.

The 19-year-old Italian let the race settle down before remorselessly homing in on the Ferrari and blasting past Hamilton on the Hangar Straight on lap eight after strategically saving his battery charge.

He made one attempt at Brooklands corner at the end of the Wellington Straight only to be rebuffed, before blasting past Hamilton on the Hangar Straight on lap eight after strategically saving his battery charge.

Hamilton hung on bravely but could do nothing to stop Antonelli extending his championship lead still further to 43 points over Russell.
