The ease of Kimi's sprint win disheartened the optimist in me who wants Lewis to script a fairytale here. Keeping my fingers crossed though.

  2. Marshals clearing trackpublished at 16:30 BST 4 July

The wind is catching a lot drivers out in qualifying, with George Russell and Franco Colapinto both finding themselves in trouble at different parts of the track in Q1. The marshals are just doing a bit of clearing up before we get going again.

Sky Sports have nabbed Esteban Ocon for a quick chat. The Haas driver says he saw Colapinto go off, his engineer said there was a single yellow flag waving, so he lifted off and lost time. The Frenchman thinks he would've had enough to go through.

The session will be getting under way in around four minutes' time.

This is where it gets difficult for drivers who are on the bubble, when people start talking about who might move out of a team, might be replaced by a fresher, more hopeful, ambitious driver and possibly cheaper. This is difficult for drivers who feel like they are fighting for survival. Esteban Ocon has a bit of a battle on his hands.

Unless there is some weird analysis in Q3, surely the only reasonable pole 'other' is Hadjar?

  5. Team Radio - Colapinto to Alpinepublished at 16:24 BST 4 July

Franco Colapinto: "Like I lost it flat completely lost the rear."

Race engineer: "There's nothing obvious standing out at the moment. There's a slight wind shift but it's not big."

  6. Postpublished at 16:24 BST 4 July

Franco Colapinto had a huge slide off the track in the closing stages of Q1 around Maggots and Becketts, so the Alpine driver fails to join his team-mate Pierre Gasly in the next part of qualifying.

Isack Hadjar was quickest in that session, followed by the Racing Bulls of Liam Lawson and the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc.

It is the usual weaker teams, you have to say, that are going to fill the bottom grid places but it is still a bit tense there.

Lando Norris has made a mistake in the middle of his lap and he has had to abort. He is 11th, he should be alright. He doesn't have time to go again.

Franco Colapinto has pitted, so the Alpine driver waves goodbye at the first hurdle. Valtteri Bottas was briefly safe in the Cadillac but the Haas of Esteban Ocon shoves him back into the danger zone.

Lance Stroll has outqualified Fernando Alonso again. This is not a drill.

Kimi Antonelli is third on the timehseets at the moment but the next driver to take a shot at the top spot is Isack hadjar, who clocks a 1:29.279 in the Red Bull.

Bottom six is still the same, but Gabriel Bortoleto has moved up slightly to P19 after being rooted to P22 for most of this session.

And the lap time is deleted. Back down you fo, Gabi.

I don't think I have ever seen an incident like that at Luffield. I've seen Formula 1 cars here for a very long time. That is one of the strangest crashes, just about a crash. George Russell sort of nosed into the barriers at about 5mph, broken his front wing off.

The Cadillacs and the Aston Martins are stuck in danger zone as usual and are now joined by the Alpine of Franco Colapinto.

George Russell crosses the line and goes sixth fastest, which will be enough to get the Mercedes driver into Q2 at Silverstone.

  15. Team radio - Russell to Mercedespublished at 16:15 BST 4 July

George Russell: "That was very weird. I've never locked up there in my whole career."

It was a very heavy lock-up for George Russell before his trip across the gravel and he told his pit wall afterwards he's never experienced anything like it at Silverstone.

Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton are still top of the timesheets, as Russell composes himself for another go at a flying lap.

I voted someone else. Racing Bulls' Liam Lawson... being a Kiwi, I had to, didn't I?!

My 1% for pole is either Alonso or Stroll!! Aston are going to come to the fore this weekend.

  18. Russell heading back outpublished at 16:12 BST 4 July

That incident for George Russell has put him and a few other drivers on the backfoot now. Gabriel Bortoleto is also yet to set a time for Audi with six minutes left in this Q1 session.

Joining Russell and Bortoleto in the bottom six is Sergio Perez, Valtteri Bottas, Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll.

Russell is heading back out noe. 'Phew' for Mercedes.

I think the weight is on Kimi Antonelli, he has the form and the Mercedes look quick in the sprint, they looked able to stay at the front but you just can't tell with this formula because the battery deployment and tyre usage, a lot could happen in a longer race.

The track is clear but George Russell has brought a load of gravel back on to the track. The Mercedes driver understeered off the road and ended up running across the gravel at Woodcote and into the barriers. Russell is heading back to the pits to fix his damaged front wing.
