Barnsley have not fared well against Cardiff in recent years, winless in their nine previous meetings and losing six of those.

You have to go back to 2016 for their most recent victory against the Bluebirds, a thrilling 4-3 triumph here at Cardiff City Stadium.

Current Barnsley head coach Conor Hourihane was in the Tykes’ team that day.

  6. What's happening in League One?published at 19:41 GMT 27 January

League One is not for the claustrophobic. The tightness of the third tier sees 10 points separate third from 14th.

Among tonight’s fixtures, there are plenty of matchups against sides close together in the table. That means a win could offer daylight over a challenger.

In an exception to that rule, third-placed Bolton take on 20th-placed Burton. A victory would keep the pressure on the automatic spots. Tuesday specialists Stockport (they’ve not lost on a Tuesday since September 2022) are level on points with the Trotters and face Blackpool.

Peterborough have never lost to A1 rivals Stevenage – winless in eight – with both split by a single point in the play-off outskirts of ninth and eighth.

Wycombe are part of the five-team crew sitting on 36 points, knowing their short-term form could dictate which battle will be in come May. The Chairboys host relegation-threatened Wigan.

Mansfield are the most in-form team in League One – after four wins in their last five – they face Plymouth, who are fourth in the form table. To add to the drama, both are level on points, with the victor likely to skip firmly into the play-off conversations.

On the other hand, Northampton and Rotherham have been the worst two teams of 2026 – with three points between them this year - and sit in the relegation zone. The Cobblers could escape the bottom four with a win.

In the 20:00 GMT kick-offs, Reading and Exeter are level on points in mid-table, although the Royals have won 14 of the last 16 matches between the sides at the Select Car Leasing Stadium. Doncaster v Leyton Orient is also a later kick-off.

  7. Leaders aiming to shine under the lightspublished at 19:39 GMT 27 January

    Cardiff v Barnsley (19:45 GMT)

The Bluebirds are flying high at the top of League One and are unbeaten in seven since Christmas, but three draws in their past five games means Lincoln remain too close for comfort.

Brian Barry-Murphy's men have lost their past three midweek home games but do have a fine record against tonight's visitors Barnsley, who have dropped into the bottom half after a major wobble in December, but have a win and two draws since the turn of the year and have several games in hand in which to close back on the top-six.

The Tykes are winless in nine against City, taking just three points, and have not won in Cardiff since December 2016 - pinching a 95th minute winner in a 4-3 victory.

We'd all love more drama like that tonight, wouldn't we?

  8. Imps aim to keep run going as Bantams fly southpublished at 19:37 GMT 27 January

    Lincoln v Bradford (19:45 GMT)

The phrase six-pointer was made for this game.

The Imps are unbeaten in 10, winning seven of them, including a dogged 2-1 win over Burton last Thursday.

Another here could potentially trim Cardiff's lead at the top, depending how the Bluebirds fare against Barnsley, but would definitely extend their advantage over the Bantams to nine points and see Graham Alexander's side drop out of the top four for the first time since early September. A win for the visitors would set the Bantams back among the pigeons and cut City's advantage to three points, having played a game more.

Bradford have however lost three of their past four games, both overall and on their travels, most recently going down 1-0 at Huddersfield on Saturday.

They do have a good record at Sincil Bank though, taking 13 points from their past six visits and winning 2-1 on their most recent trip in January 2011.

Both these sides love playing on Tuesdays, by the way, Lincoln have won six of their past seven home games on a Tuesday while Bradford have lost just one of 11 Tuesday games, claiming 22 points overall.

  10. Hatters seek to put a leash on Terrierspublished at 19:35 GMT 27 January

    Huddersfield v Luton (19:45 GMT)

Liam Manning applauds Huddersfield fansImage source, Shutterstock

    Huge game, this.

The Liam Manning era got off to a perfect start as the Terriers beat Bradford 1-0 on Saturday while closest-rivals Luton went down 1-0 at Plymouth to slip three points behind Huddersfield in seventh.

The Hatters beat Lee Grant's side 2-1 at Kenilworth Road in November and also won by the same score on their last visit to Huddersfield in January 2023, but Jack Wilshere's side are on a dodgy run in Yorkshire, losing four of their past six fixtures in its confines.

When the lights shine brightest the Terriers have sunk into the shadows of late, winning just one of their past nine floodlit midweek games, and losing six of them.

Will the new manager bounce continue? If so Huddersfield will be closing on the sides above them rather than looking over their shoulder.

  11. All up for grabs in League Onepublished at 19:33 GMT 27 January

    League One

Nothing is decided in January, it's a marathon not a sprint, yes, we know all that.

But tonight, Tuesday, 27 January, feels like it might be a huge one in the grand scheme of this League One season.

With all due respect to the teams involved, the games between Plymouth and Mansfield and Reading and Exeter are the only ones not to involve a side near the top, battling for the play-offs, or striving for safety.

By bedtime Cardiff could be 13 points clear in the promotion race, and with a seven-point cushion in the title race, or they could have their lead trimmed to a point should they lose to Barnsley while Lincoln overcome Bradford.

Bolton and Stockport will be aiming to close the gap should the Imps drop points while Huddersfield welcome closest-challengers Luton in a play-off six-pointer and resurgent Peterborough would leapfrog one-time leaders Stevenage with another win.

Second-bottom Rotherham host fourth-bottom Northampton in another humdinger while the side sandwiched between them, Doncaster will try to drag Leyton Orient into deeper trouble.

  12. The lay of the League Two landpublished at 19:31 GMT 27 January

Bromley shook off then second-placed Swindon with an 89th-minute winner to pull out a six-point lead at the top of the table at the weekend. With a favourable wind, they may well be nine points clear come bedtime.

But they will be wary of late drama against Crewe. In this fixture last season, they were leading Alex in the 83rd minute but ended up losing 2-1.

The rest of the chasing pack is bunched up, with Cambridge and Walsall lurking outside the automatic promotion places on goal difference and looking forward to home games with history on their side.

The U’s host Shrewsbury – who haven’t won an EFL game at the Cledara Abbey Stadium since 1974, 17 attempts ago. While the Saddlers welcome Crawley – who haven’t taken three points from Pallet-Track Bescot Stadium in six attempts.

The bottom end is just as constricted. Five teams could end the night in the bottom two. Crawley, Shrewsbury, Bristol Rovers, Newport County and Harrogate.

County beat Chesterfield at the weekend and will be aiming to keep the positivity going against Accrington. Bottom-placed Harrogate haven’t won since September 27 but host a Fleetwood side that has one point from the last 15 available.

Colchester have a potential play-off spot on their minds against Grimsby – who could win for a fifth straight match. And Tranmere go to Barnet.

It’s a big one at Meadow Lane tonight as two promotion-chasers in Notts County and Swindon face off with only a point separating them.

Both have memories of playing in League One - the Magpies in 2015 and the Robins as recently as 2021. And both are trying to get back to the third tier.

County stuttered over the festive period with a four-game winless run (D2 L2) but have recovered well with two wins on the bounce to remain in the top-seven.

Swindon started the weekend just gone in second place but such is the tight nature of this division, their late defeat at Bromley and results elsewhere meant they dropped four places to sixth.

Saturday’s loss to the leaders was the first time this season Ian Holloway’s side have lost twice in a row in the league and they need to bounce back to keep their promotion bid on track.

    Salford v Chesterfield (19:45 GMT)

What a run Salford City have been on of late.

The Ammies have won three on the bounce in League Two, are unbeaten in their past nine (W7 D2) and through to the FA Cup fourth round for the first time in their history with a date at Manchester City in the diary.

Karl Robinson’s side are second and six points behind leaders Bromley but have a game in hand on the Ravens as they look to continue breaking club records by reaching League One for the first time.

They welcome a Chesterfield side who, by contrast, are struggling a little and without a win in their past five games (D3 L2) since a 2-0 victory over Notts County on Boxing Day.

The Spireites suffered a disappointing 2-1 defeat at relegation-battling Newport at the weekend but are still within four points of the play-off places - though they face a tough test tonight if they are to avoid losing further ground.

  16. Can Gas reignite season at MK?published at 19:24 GMT 27 January

MK Dons v Bristol Rovers (19:45 GMT)

MK Dons would have harboured ambitions of returning straight to League One when they were relegated in 2023 but after losing in the play-off semi-final to Crawley in 2023-24, they slumped to a 19th-place finish last season.

Their promotion push is in much better shape this time around under Paul Warne, though, as they start the evening in third place after two straight victories and just one loss in their past eight (W4 D3).

Tonight’s visitors Bristol Rovers are lingering dangerously close to the bottom two with only a point separating them from Newport in 23rd.

The Gas have improved marginally since Steve Evans took over in mid-December, ending their 10-match losing streak in his first game in charge with a 1-1 draw at Crewe before picking up their first win for three months at Shrewsbury on New Year’s Day.

But Rovers have lost their past two - and four of the six games Evans has overseen - and remain firmly embroiled in the relegation scrap.

Evans will be back on the touchline after watching Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Salford from the stands following a one-match ban for misconduct during the 4-3 Vertu Trophy loss at Plymouth.

    League Two

With just four points separating Salford City in second from Notts County in seventh, League Two really is too close to call.

Any one of those six sides could end the night in the automatic promotion places behind pace-setters Bromley, who will hope to extend their lead at the top, while Colchester will be hoping to muscle their way into a play-off spot when they welcome Grimsby.

At the bottom, both Newport and Harrogate could climb out of the relegation zone if results go their way, with Bristol Rovers, Shrewsbury and Crawley all at risk of dropping into the bottom two.

  20. Postponements as Storm Chandra takes holdpublished at 19:17 GMT 27 January

    League One & League Two

The first thing to tell you before we get stuck into the build-up for the games that are going ahead is that Storm Chandra has unfortunately forced a few to be called off.

In League One, Port Vale's clash with AFC Wimbledon has been postponed due to "large amounts of standing water" on the playing surface at Vale Park.

Meanwhile in League Two, Barrow's game against Oldham is off due to "wind speeds and gusts that present a risk to supporter safety".

Cheltenham Town v Gillingham has also been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
