Woltemade, Dan Burn, Jacob Ramsey, Anthony Elanga and Joe Willock all come into the side following Sunday’s defeat at the hands of Aston Villa.

Man City v Galatasaray (20:00 GMT)

    Shamoon Hafez
Football news reporter at Etihad Stadium

    Man City v Galatasaray

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola makes four changes to the side that beat Wolves on Saturday for his highly-important Champions League game against Galatasaray.

Star man Erling Haaland returns to the side, but plays alongside Omar Marmoush in, what looks like, a 4-4-2 formation.

Rayan Ait-Nouri gets a start, while Nathan Ake and Jeremy Doku also come in.

Marc Guehi and Antoine Semenyo are ineligible so are not involved, Rodri is suspended after his red card at Bodo/Glimt, while Tijjani Reijnders drops to the bench.

Man City XI: Donnarumma, Nunes, Khusanov, Ake, Ait-Nouri, Silva, O’Reilly, Marmoush, Cherki, Doku, Haaland

    Man City v Galatasaray

Turkish league leaders Galatasaray make two changes to the side that beat Fatih Karagumruk in the league on Saturday.

Ex-Manchester City winger Leroy Sane comes into the side, while the English side's former midfielder Ilkay Gundogan captains the side.

There is plenty of ex-Premier League interest in this team - former Fulham man Mario Lemina comes into midfield, while ex-Tottenham defender Davinson Sanchez starts in the heart of the defence.

Former Norwich player Gabriel Sara also starts, with ex-Leicester loanee Yunus Akgun on the bench.

Dangerous Nigeria international Victor Osimhen leads the line.

Galatasaray XI: Cakir, Sallai, Sanchez, Bardakci, Jakob, Gundogan, Lemina, Sane, Sara, Yilmaz, Osimhen.

Based on the table, out of all the English clubs, Man City has the hardest job towards automatic qualification for round of 16. Though my gut says Chelsea might be the one to miss out, as they face Napoli at their home, Napoli can still qualify with a win, and Conte loves to poke his previous teams in the eye.

  6. Another thrilling league phase finale?published at 18:42 GMT 28 January

Morgan Rogers celebrates, Foden reacts stunnedImage source, Getty Images

This time last year we were preparing for the final night of action in the inaugural league phase format of the Champions League.

And what a night that turned out to be.

In the first half alone the top eight of the standings changed five times, with Aston Villa ultimately winning out alongside Lille and Bayer Leverkusen.

It was a rollercoaster evening at Villa Park, as they raced into a two-goal lead against Celtic, squandered it, and then scored two more to snatch automatic qualification for the last sixteen.

Manchester City were staring down the prospect of being eliminated from the competition entirely, only to turn it around in the second half to scrape into the play-offs.

Heavyweights Bayern Munich and Real Madrid were also condemned to a play-off place, while PSV Eindhoven joined them with a stunning win over table-toppers Liverpool.

Arsenal battled from behind at Girona to seal third, and eventual European champions PSG finished in 15th.

Are we set for another entertaining night of twists and turns as the 2025-26 league phase draws to a close? Fingers crossed.

Anyone remember the final round of league phase games last season?

Aston Villa beat Celtic 4-2 at Villa Park, Liverpool lost at PSV Eindhoven and Ousmane Dembele scored a hat-trick for eventual champions Paris St-Germain away at Stuttgart.

There were 64 goals in total across the 18 fixtures.

Will that figure be bettered tonight?

Liverpool fan Dan Clubbe, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast: "Arne Slot is under immense pressure - certainly amongst the fanbase.

"It feels like our Champions League form is holding firm compared to domestically and it's nights like tonight that have given us respite in many ways.

"We are just trying to navigate our way through a disappointing spell."

After Spurs' convincing win against (a poor) Dortmund last week you'd think we'd get the job done against Frankfurt (who have struggled in the Champions League), but we're not called 'Spursy' for nothing. I expect a rollercoaster ride tonight. A draw won't be enough for auto qualification.

Both teams are aiming to avoid the play-off and those extra games.

If you remember back to last season, Paris St-Germain finished 15th in the Champions League but it's not how you start - it's how you finish.

It does feel a bit similar this season. They went back to top of Ligue 1 at the weekend, but they've slipped up a few times in the Champions League and still have work to do.

I still fancy PSG to go on and win the Champions League though. Just as last season, they will build up a head of steam and be the team to beat in this competition.

What a night in store at the Parc des Princes.

Both Newcastle United and Paris St-Germain may be safe in the knowledge that they have already secured a play-off spot for a place in the last 16.

But tonight is a winner-takes-all occasion as these sides look to automatically book their place in the knockout stages.

It is an almighty test for Newcastle, who have won just three away games all season, against the European champions.

But Luis Enrique’s side have shown one or two vulnerabilities in recent months.

The holders have only won one of their previous four Champions League fixtures, losing against Sporting last time out. They scored just one goal from 46 shots versus Sporting and Athletic Club. The Ligue 1 leaders have even been knocked out of the French Cup by Paris FC.

However, by the same token, PSG ominously started to click into gear around this time last year following a pivotal home win against another English side, Manchester City.

Newcastle really will have to be at their best to pull off one of the most famous results in the club’s history.

“This is the ultimate test for me in Europe,” head coach Eddie Howe said. “This will be the hardest game that we could have played, but we've got to go in with the attitude that we relish that.

“We've got to rise to that occasion.”

The fate of Frankfurt, Slavia Prague, Villarreal and Kairat is already confirmed as they are not able to qualify for the play-off positions.

However, for the likes of Ajax, Benfica and Club Brugge, the play-off positions are in sight.

Results, of course, will have to go a team's way, but for Cypriot side Pafos, history could be made if they qualify for the play-offs in their debut season in the Champions League.
