  1. 'Win our game and wait'published at 19:25 GMT 28 January

Manchester City v Galatasaray (20:00 GMT)

    Manchester City

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, speaking to TNT Sports: "Last season we had to qualify for the last 24, and in the first half we were out. Today the situation is a little bit different. We have to win our game and wait.

"The determination is always there. I did not meet ever a player who before a game did not have the determination. It is always there. They always want to win, but sometimes the performance is not good or the opponent is better, so it is what it is."

On making five changes to the line-up: "Well for the last game they were not available - we had 11 absences, which is not enough players to play in the Champions League. Mateus [Nunes] made an incredible effort after the virus he had to come back against Wolves.

"Nathan could not play against Bodo and so we said to him to focus on the game against Galatasaray and he is ready. Doku he has incredible talent in the final third, one against one, but not just him, we need to play with a good process."

  2. Newcastle spring surprise as Howe 'trusts' squadpublished at 19:23 GMT 28 January

Well, I don't think anyone will have predicted that Newcastle United side.

With an eye on Saturday's trip to Anfield, Eddie Howe said he was going to have to "trust" his squad - and the Newcastle head coach has recalled Dan Burn, Joe Willock, Jacob Ramsey, Anthony Elanga and Nick Woltemade for tonight's game against Paris St-Germain.

Captain Bruno Guimaraes has not been risked from the off.

Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes, who have scored 11 goals between them in the Champions League, only make the bench.

It looks like the visitors have gone with a back five at the Parc des Princes, and Howe clearly wants his side to stay in the game and then use the pace of Anthony Elanga, Joe Willock and Jacob Ramsey to take them up the pitch.

Paris St-Germain have also rung the changes, and goalkeeper Matvei Safonov has even been handed a rare start.

However, after resting players at the weekend, the holders have been boosted by the return of Ballon d'Or winner Ousmane Dembele, Achraf Hakimi, Marquinhos, Willian Pacho, Nuno Mendes and Joao Neves.

    That's quite a squad.

  3. 'We can't risk Guimaraes if he's not 100%'published at 19:21 GMT 28 January

    PSG v Newcastle (20:00 GMT)

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, speaking to TNT Sports: "We have to play with that confidence, but I want us to be really good tactically today. I think we have to be against a team which is so fluid and so progressive.

"It is a really good challenge for us and a test to see where we are. The reason behind the changes is so we have fresh players to execute the way we want to play."

On Bruno Guimaraes being on the bench: "We had a conversation. I think he himself thought that it is possibly best for him to not start. We can't risk him if he is not 100% fit."

Newcastle fan Charlotte Robson, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast: "There's a lot riding on it. I'm feeling tentative about it now but by eight o'clock tonight I will be absolutely convinced that we're going to win.

"The form is consistently inconsistent. In the Champions League it has been ok. We've had some incredible nights at St James' Park, which has been class, but the opposition hasn't been the calibre of PSG. So tonight is a big test."

Really not a fan of this “square pegs in round holes” approach by Liverpool. We have a young centre-back, Amara Nallo on the bench, use him!

Victory against sixth-placed PSG would elevate Newcastle into the top four – ensuring a second leg at home in the last 16 and quarter-finals – if two of Real Madrid, Liverpool and Tottenham slip up.

Regardless, a win for Newcastle will surely be enough for the top eight. To displace them, at least three other sides currently on the same points would need victories by improbable scorelines.

The Magpies have little margin for error though as, realistically, they're in catching range of nine sides (not 10, as Dortmund play Inter so can't both overtake Newcastle). A draw would leave them relying on only one of the chasing pack winning – or two if Tottenham lose – while defeat would make it unrealistic for Eddie Howe's side to stay in the top eight.

There were queues of Napoli supporters getting ready to enter the stadium over three hours before kick-off.

The Stadio Diego Armando Maradona is famously one of the loudest atmospheres in world football and you would expect it to be on point tonight given this is a must-win match against Chelsea.

Pictures, statues and merchandise featuring Maradona are everywhere in this spectacular - if dated - stadium built for Italia 90.

Galatasaray fans took over Manchester city centre this afternoon and they have brought the colour with them from Istanbul.

I walked with them up to the away supporters' entrance as they let off red flares and chanted "we are the best, we are the best in all the world".

Turkish fans are known to bring a tremendous atmosphere to football matches and it won't be any different tonight.

And it's a good time to pull an old feature I wrote from my weekend in Istanbul back in 2019.

  13. A look at how Havertz is used in future?published at 19:02 GMT 28 January

    Arsenal v Kairat (20:00 GMT)

    Alex Howell
BBC Sport Arsenal reporter at Emirates Stadium

It will be really interesting to see how Mikel Arteta uses Kai Havertz when he returns to full fitness.

It looks as though Havertz is starting in midfield tonight in support of forward Viktor Gyokeres.

Arteta also brought Havertz on in that position for the final 20 minutes of Arsenal's FA Cup win over Portsmouth earlier this month.

Havertz is one of Arteta's favourite players so will always look to find a way to accommodate him in his team.

Summer signing VGyokeres has struggled this season as the Gunners front man, so there is a natural place for Havertz to come into the side.

But tonight gives a chance to see how the pair link up when in the same starting XI.

    Liverpool v Qarabag (20:00 GMT)

Victory tonight would not only put Liverpool in the last 16 but ensure they almost certainly end the league phase in third or fourth spot – crucially, that earns them a second leg at home for the next round and any quarter-final.

But Qarabag know a positive result will see them secure their spot in the play-offs.

It's all to play for at Anfield.

  15. Team news - Reece James at centre-back as Palmer only fit enough for benchpublished at 18:57 GMT 28 January

    Napoli v Chelsea (20:00 GMT)

    Nizaar Kinsella
    BBC Sport Chelsea reporter

Napoli are without ex-Chelsea midfielders Kevin de Bruyne and Billy Gilmour but Romelu Lukaku is fit enough to make the bench.

Antonio Conte's team also feature ex-Manchester United players Scott McTominay and Rasmus Hojlund as starters.

They have only named five outfield substitutes on their bench amid an injury crisis.

Napoli XI: Meret, Buongiorno, Juan Jesus, Spinazzola, Di Lorenzo, Lobotka, McTominay, Vergara, Elmas, Olivera, Hojlund

Subs: Contini, Spinelli, Gutierrez, Lukaku, Beukema, De Chiara, Garafalo

    Napoli line-up

Chelsea have opted to play Reece James at centre-back in a curious tactical switch from manager Liam Rosenior.

It opens up the possibility the Blues have matches up Napoli to play a back three.

Cole Palmer is only fit enough for the bench having missed the last two games.

Chelsea XI: Sanchez, Gusto, James, Fofana, Cucurella, Santos, Caicedo, Estevao, Fernandez, Neto, Joao Pedro

Subs: Jorgensen, Merrick, Acheampong, Badiashile, Chalobah, Hato, Palmer, Gittens, Garnacho, Delap, George, Guiu
