The atmosphere is building inside the Parc des Princes.

The Paris St-Germain stadium announcer is whipping up the crowd pitchside as the home support wave their flags and bang their drums.

    "Ici, c'est?" he roars.

    "Paris!" the crowd respond.

He then goes on to read out the Newcastle United team to loud whistles from the locals.

Newcastle are going to have to frustrate the crowd when this one kicks off in a few minutes.

Given their poor away record, the visitors really can't afford to concede an early goal.

"Going out there and putting on a top performance is definitely what we need."

I just don't understand what Chiesa has to do to get a game, top professional and always puts in an 8/10 game. Play him at centre back, he'd probably do a job!

  5. Liverpool can still do 'special things'published at 19:50 GMT 28 January

    Liverpool v Qarabag (20:00 GMT)

Premier League champions Liverpool have won just five of their last 18 league games as the noise around Arne Slot's future grows louder.

But the Reds can secure their place in the last 16 with a win tonight and Slot still thinks his team can do "special things" this season.

"If we can improve in both boxes, we can do very special things this season," Slot said.

"But if we can only improve in one box, then it will probably be an acceptable season but not more than that.

"And if we can't improve in both boxes, there's going to be a lot of noise."

As a Chelsea fan, I feel we should show we are World Club champions. We should fear nobody and no-one. If we can beat the best in the world, we can beat the best in Europe.

I suspect there may have been in Eddie Howe's thinking that even if he went with his strongest team then there's a fair chance they'll get beat if PSG turn up.

It's an opportunity for some players coming into the starting line-up because the likes of Anthony Elanga haven't played too much this season.

I fear for them a little bit with that starting line-up. Anthony Gordon with six goals in this competition, Harvey Barnes with five goals in this competition and Bruno Guimaraes are all on the bench.

Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior, speaking to TNT Sports: "When you get into football you want to get to the very highest level, whether that's a player or coach. And I've really enjoyed the first few weeks in my new role.

"It's been a positive start. Firstly the players and their engagement and attitude and willingness to learn, I think they have enjoyed it as well. Tonight is another big test for us and if we manage to come through it , it gives us a great chance of being in the top eight."

On Napoli: "They are very good on transition. They are very organised in their press. From what I've seen they will press us really, really high, whether that is from a 3-4-3 or a 5-4-1. They have outstanding players. They build well from the back. It is going to be a difficult game and we are prepared for it."

This is a tricky game for Manchester City. I think if they score first then this is not a Galatasaray team that usually comes back into games. But if they don't score the first goal then it becomes even harder.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta, speaking to TNT Sports: "This is the Champions League. Kairat is a team which is so used to winning.

"Watching the game back against Real Madrid, they [Kairat] made it difficult for them. We need to keep the stand as high as possible, do what we need to do and then finish the job."

On the 11 changes: "Good news, it means we have lots of players available. That is what we need with the schedule at the moment. Important to maintain the quality and maintain everybody's minutes."

On Kai Havertz starting: "We have been missing him big time - he has been out for a long, long time. It is great to see him back."

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Arne Slot, speaking to TNT Sports: "[Qarabag] are quite comparable to what we face in the Premier League. A direct style of play, and I don't mean long balls but balls in behind, and fast attackers. One of the reason they have ten points is that these forward players, and the full-backs, have a lot of pace.

"We have to make sure that we have a lot of the ball, first of all because w have a lot of offensive players on the pitch, and secondly because they are a real threat if they have possession."

On the noise and building momentum: "I haven't talked about the noise around the team. There are a lot of questions. If you look at our league position it is fair, there should be noise, it is definitely not where we want to be. Tonight you want a result of course, a win would make top eight sure, a draw depends on other results. As always as a manager you not only want a win but ideally a good performance as well."

On Gravenberch at centre half: "The way they [Qarabag] usually press would mean that our right centre back can be quite influential in our build up. Defensively it wouldn't always be a midfielder in that position, but Ryan has pace. One and a half seasons ago he was an attacking midfielder, since then a number six and now he has to show his qualities as a centre-back."

The fact Liverpool are playing Gravenberch at centre back lays bare their recruitment strategy. Why wasn’t Guehi prioritised earlier in the summer? Why aren’t we buying a centre back now?

A Chelsea supporter has described his "shock" after being stabbed and taken to hospital before Wednesday's Champions League match against Napoli

Marcus, 22, who did not want to give his surname, said he and a group of Chelsea fans were targeted in the centre of Naples by a group of Napoli 'ultras' - a term used for hardcore supporter groups in European football.

"We turned a corner - it wasn't technically an alleyway, but it felt like one because there were no lights," he said.

"There were about 20 or 30 people, all in black, walking towards us as soon as we made eye contact. Some people knew what was happening and ran straight away."

Marcus, who was with "seven or eight" friends, added: "It was definitely a shock. Everyone was shaken up when we eventually found the police.

"I was in shorts and they were covered in blood, with blood going all down my leg. We think it was a screwdriver – it could've been a blade. It was either that or a screwdriver.

"I didn't really feel it until I started running away. My left cheek felt heavy, almost, and as soon as I touched it my hand was covered in blood."

Tottenham boss Thomas Frank, speaking to TNT Sports: "A huge opportunity. We, of course, go all in to try to progress to the round of 16.

"We believe we have a very good chance - Frankfurt are very strong at home - we need to come flying out. It is not easy breaking down a back five, and it will most likely be a tight game."We are very aware that we have an opportunity to score some goals. We have a team out there which is capable of doing that.

"I think sometimes you never know. They can always play completely free - there is no pressure on them. We need to be 'we need to win to get through'. That is the big aim."

Looking to haunt his former club is Antonio Conte. The Napoli boss spent two years at Stamford Bridge - winning the Premier League in 2016-17.

Napoli start the night heading out of the Champions League but a win will secure their spot in the play-offs.
