  1. Sky Blues looking to extend leadpublished at 17:52 GMT 29 December 2025

Any side that has ambitions of winning a title has to dig in and grind out tough results at some point in the season.

Coventry City have certainly had to do that in recent weeks since their 3-0 defeat at the hands of Ipswich Town, who they welcome tonight.

The Sky Blues have won two of their past five - both of which have been narrow 1-0 home victories - and drawn two, including a hard-fought point with 10 men at Southampton.

Frank Lampard's side remain firmly in the driving seat in the race for automatic promotion to the Premier League and could pile further pressure on the chasing pack before they play a bit later on.

A win would move Coventry 11 points clear of Middlesbrough in second and, perhaps more importantly, a whopping 16 clear of tonight's opponents in third, albeit with Boro, Hull, Preston, Bristol City and Millwall playing a little later.

Coventry City could move 11 points clear of second with a win over Ipswich Town in tonight's early game.

Hull City could find themselves as high as third place by the end of play and just two points outside the automatic places with a victory at second-placed Middlesbrough.

Millwall against Bristol City has big connotations for the play-off race.

At the bottom, Portsmouth against Charlton and Oxford United's meeting with Swansea City look important ones, while Blackburn will be conscious a slip up at Sheffield Wednesday would drag them further into the mire.

The EFL are unable to handpick fixtures, but for the final night of 2025 action, they, and we, have been dealt a beauty.

First versus third and second against fourth - second-tier football at its finest.

Runaway leaders Coventry kick off the festivities at home to pre-season promotion favourites Ipswich, before Middlesbrough welcome Hull, the two sides probably most defying expectations in this crazy decision.

But that's not all. Far from it.

All 24 teams are playing and wherever the action and the drama is, we'll be on hand to guide you through it.

So settle back and stick with us for the next few hours!
