  2. 'I couldn't be prouder of the players' - Heckingbottompublished at 22:40 GMT 9 December 2025

    FT: Preston 1-1 Coventry

    Preston North End

Preston manager Paul Heckingbottom told BBC Radio Lancashire:

"We’ve had two top performances, in different ways, and we only get two points. It’s always about winning but I couldn’t be any prouder of the players today, they were magnificent. They showed what we’re all about.

"When we had the ball they recovered well and we found it hard to break them down, but I always felt when we were trying to press they were getting their players in behind us, [Jack] Rudoni and Haji Wright, that was their threat.

"It didn’t lead to a goal but it led to a sending-off. Both teams were playing the conditions - it was windy, gusty, bobbly, scrappy and the sending-off changed the dynamic of the game totally and the pattern was set.

"We went 5-3-1 to keep that coverage across the pitch so it was a tough shift for Jebbo [Daniel Jebbison]. We defended really really well and Dan [Iversen] had his moment with the save, their [deflected] goal was the only way he was going to get beaten."

    Kick-off 19:45 GMT unless stated

    • Bristol City v Leicester
    • Derby v Millwall
    • Ipswich v Stoke
    • Hull v Wrexham (20:00 BST)
  4. 'It was about killing the game off' - Hellbergpublished at 22:31 GMT 9 December 2025

    FT: Charlton 1-2 Middlesbrough

    Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough manager Kim Hellberg speaking to BBC Radio Tees:

"The first 45 minutes was very good, away from home, playing with pace, striking the ball. We were close to creating four or five bigger chances, crosses we didn’t get a head or foot on.

"They came out with energy in the first 10 minutes of the second half; we regained control and it felt like we killed it off.

"Of course when they scored a goal, the stadium becomes energised but I was proud of the way we defended.

"The second half was not our best football - it was about killing the game off. We had fewer attacking options, they got energy. If we can take more steps we can be better on the ball; it is about being brave.

"It is good to see we can play different types of football."

Last season Preston would not have come back to draw that. There’s a new sense of fight that I think could maybe lead to play-offs finally.

  6. There was nothing in the game - Mousinhopublished at 22:23 GMT 9 December 2025

    FT: Swansea 1-0 Portsmouth

    Portsmouth

Portsmouth boss John Mousinho speaking to BBC Radio Solent:

"The performance was really solid and the effort levels were there, we just switched off for the goal and didn't get the press right.

"There was nothing in the game but what is frustrating is that we got into some really good areas and just did not put Swansea under enough pressure.

"When we get into good areas we either don't shoot or the ball doesn't come into the area quick enough, with the players we have at the top of the pitch we definitely have to be better.

"The major frustration for me was the goal, i could have taken coming away from here with a point."

Middlesbrough to south-east London is a heck of a long journey to make on a Tuesday night in December.

It'll feel a little shorter for those Boro supporters with three points to take back on the bus home.

  8. Postpublished at 22:16 GMT 9 December 2025

    FT: Preston 1-1 Coventry

    Adam Cottier
BBC Radio 5 Live at Deepdale

That draw was celebrated like a victory here at Deepdale. All the guts and spirit of a team absolutely determined to stay in the mix.

Preston North End are made of stronger stuff this season and that was a remarkable show of resolve against the leaders.

  9. Eckert focusing on positives after win over Baggiespublished at 22:13 GMT 9 December 2025

FT: Southampton 3-2 West Bromwich Albion

    Southampton

Southampton boss Tonda Eckert speaking to BBC Radio Solent:

"I think the second half showed what an energy St Mary's can create for us and I take that as a positive.

"I'm trying to look at the result more positive as it's the Championship and there are no easy games.

"Both goals came from dead ball situations and we need to defend them better but we won the game and take the three points.

"The first half was excellent and we came out strong, in the second half the game became more difficult when they scored and we just had to bring the game over the line which we did."

  10. 'Coventry haven't hit a brick wall'published at 22:09 GMT 9 December 2025

    FT: Preston 1-1 Coventry

    Steve Ogrizovic
Ex-Coventry City goalkeeper on BBC CWR

Coventry haven't hit a brick wall, not at all. They were good tonight. The pitch wasn't great and Preston just took their chance when they got it.

They needed to keep control but they just didn't respond to the changes Preston made. Jebbison was a real handful to defend. It looked like Preston might even win it at points.

It is a point away from home which is still good but considering they were down to 10 men for that long it feels like two points dropped.

  11. 'The fans will appreciate that performance'published at 22:06 GMT 9 December 2025

    FT: Sheffield United 1-1 Norwich

    Ryan Bennett
Former Norwich defender on BBC Radio Norfolk

That is a good point and a good performance.

There was intensity from both sides, it was a great game. Norwich showed real commitment tonight. The attitude they showed was first class. The fans will really appreciate that tonight.

We only care about how many points clear we are of third place.

    Mitchell

And the answer is leaders Coventry are 10 points clear of third-placed Millwall, who now have a game in hand on the Sky Blues.

That's against Derby on Wednesday - so by far an easy one for Alex Neil's side.

  15. FULL-TIMEpublished at 21:57 GMT 9 December 2025

    QPR 2-1 Birmingham

Full-time and that is the winning goal - QPR have won the match with the last act of the night!

Jimmy Dunne had given Rangers a half-time lead when he headed home a very inviting cross from the right by Koki Saito.

The home side looked destined for the three points but Blues winger Patrick Roberts popped up at the back post to level the match in injury time with the visitors' first shot on target following good work from Demarai Gray.

QPR were not to be denied, however, and regained their lead with the final kick of the match when Kieran Morgan's fizzing low drive beat the grasp of Birmingham keeper James Beadle.

QPR up to sixth and into the play-off places!

GOAL: QPR 2-1 Birminghampublished at 21:54 GMT 9 December 2025

    Kieran Morgan (90+6 mins)

Birmingham's point evaporates in an instant! QPR have won it!

QPR have not given up on winning this one after conceding in injury time and Kieran Morgan thumps a strike from the edge of the box past James Beadle, who perhaps should have done better.

Morgan whips his shirt off and jumps into the crowd before receiving a yellow card from the referee. He won't care one jot about that! Incredible scenes at Loftus Road.

  17. Concerning times for Portsmouthpublished at 21:51 GMT 9 December 2025

    FT: Swansea 1-0 Portsmouth

    Andrew Moon
    BBC Radio Solent commentator

That was a damaging defeat for Pompey, allowing a very average-looking Swansea side to move six points clear of them.

In a game of little attacking quality at either end of the pitch, one goal was always likely to be enough.

    Concerning times.

  18. goal

GOAL: QPR 1-1 Birminghampublished at 21:51 GMT 9 December 2025

    Patrick Roberts (90+3 mins)

It's late but it's great for Birmingham City!

They have not given up tonight and may well have rescued a point.

Demarai Gray does excellently and pulls the ball back which evades everyone except for Patrick Roberts, at the back post, who keeps his composure at the vital moment to stroke the ball into the back of the net from 10 yards!

    1-1!

  19. INJURY TIMEpublished at 21:50 GMT 9 December 2025

    QPR 1-0 Birmingham

We are into SIX minutes of additional time at Loftus Road.

Birmingham have just gone so close to levelling but QPR keeper Paul Nardi has clawed the ball out from his own goalline following a header from a corner.

  20. Saints too good in first halfpublished at 21:49 GMT 9 December 2025

FT: Southampton 3-2 West Bromwich Albion

    Adam Blackmore
    BBC Radio Solent sports editor

Well that wasn’t as easy as it should have been from 3-0 at half-time but it’s a good learning - you can’t be complacent in the Championship.

Credit to West Brom for a spirited comeback but Saints' first half was just too good... again!
