  1. Essex have 'platform for big score'published at 13:37 BST 24 April

Dean Elgar reaches his 50 at The OvalImage source, Shutterstock

An excellent morning session for Essex with the openers still together at lunch after Surrey chose to field first.

Dean Elgar, out of form this season, was particularly impressive. He showed all his expertise in dealing with the swing and early movement on offer to a Surrey attack that bowled without luck.

Elgar and Paul Walter capitalised on anything loose and have set the platform for a big score on a typical Oval surface that looks good for batting under cloudless skies.

Things may change in the afternoon but it seems that Surrey, even with the return of Gus Atkinson, are again going to struggle to take the 20 wickets they need for their first victory of the campaign.

We brought you news earlier on about an unfortunate injury to Derbyshire all-rounder Anuj Dal, who had to be carried off after slipping in his run-up during the opening morning against Gloucestershire. No update yet on the nature of his injury but we'll keep you posted.

Today is the 53rd birthday of India (and one-time Yorkshire) batting master Sachin Tendulkar.

    15,921 Test runs, average 53.78 - 51 centuries

    18,476 in one-day internationals, average 44.83 - 49 centuries

    25,396 runs in all-first class cricket, average 57.84 - 81 centuries

The sort of numbers that might make bowlers weep.

We bet he's still pretty useful with a bat in his hand!

The Jacob Bethell debate continues to be a hot topic. Here are a couple more of your comments.

The Bethell situation is interesting. Surrounded by stars but getting no cricket. He is an incredible prospect, and it's likely he'll come back to Test cricket and score well. But if he really wants the number 3 long term, warming an Indian bench isn't the right way to do it.

Team Cook on the Cook v KP debate over here. No way JB is getting more out of not playing in the subcontinent than he would grinding out tough runs in April & early May. Every England move will be under the microscope this summer for sure.

    Tom HainesImage source, Shutterstock

Tom Haines has done his England prospects no harm at all under the watchful eye of Joe Root fielding at first slip, but looked disappointed to lose his wicket 10 minutes before lunch to the spin of Dom Bess

Before that Haines had dispatched the Yorkshire attack to all parts of Headingley, with some sumptuous cover drives a particular feature.

The other outstanding performer has been Jack White, who by a distance has been the pick of an otherwise wayward Yorkshire attack, and deservedly picked up two wickets in his opening spell.

On a pitch with a greenish tinge, Yorkshire may have hoped for greater inroads, having won the toss, but at lunch its about honours even

    Glamorgan 91-4 v Leicestershire - lunch

It’s been the Foxes’ morning despite Glamorgan choosing to bat in sunny conditions, with the medium pace of Ian Holland and the speed of Josh Hull doing the damage.

Much is now resting on home captain Kiran Carlson on 33 not out.

They struggled to get going against Holland who found plenty of movement as did Josh Davey, with the scoring rate crawling in the first hour.

Eddie Byrom edged behind in the second over and Zain Ul Hassan went the same way, trying to leave the ball, as Holland's first eight overs earned him figures of 2-7.

Asa Tribe looked to have weathered the storm on the way to 24 but was bowled by a fine delivery from Hull, who struck again on the stroke of lunch as Colin Ingram dragged one on to his stumps to fall for 26, straight after hitting a couple of boundaries.

Already shaping up for a high-scoring draw at the Oval. Do Surrey have a strategy to draw their home games and win away?

    Durham v Lancashire 118-3

    Worcestershire v Kent 65-3

  9. Lunch at Derbypublished at 13:08 BST 24 April

    Derbyshire v Gloucestershire 70-2

The morning session has been somewhat overshadowed by that unfortunate injury to Derbyshire all-rounder Anuj Dal, who slipped while running up to bowl and had to be carried off the field.

Gloucestershire chose to bat after winning the toss and have had their work cut out against some good bowling by the home side, the tone having been set by Mo Abbas and Ben Aitchison with the new ball.

Aitchison and Zak Chappell each picked up a wicket, but Aussie opener Cameron Bancroft is still there on 35 not out.

  10. Lunch at New Roadpublished at 13:08 BST 24 April

    Worcestershire v Kent 65-3

A tough morning for Kent who lost their top three batters to fall to 38-3 in the 16th over.

Zak Crawley reached 27 before he was caught behind and Ben Compton (4) and Sam Northeast (3) never got going.

Daniel Bell-Drummond (16* from 50 balls) and Tawanda Muyeye (15 from 43 balls) have looked to stay in rather than score runs as Kent look to rebuild.

Beyers Swanepoel, Olly Hannon-Dalby and Matthew Waite grabbed the wickets to put the Pears on top.

  11. Lunch at Trent Bridgepublished at 13:06 BST 24 April

    Notts v Warwickshire 96-3

It has been an intriguing first session at Trent Bridge as we reach lunch on day one between Notts and Warwickshire, and it is nicely poised heading into the afternoon.

The hosts inserted their visitors having won the toss this morning and quickly removed Bears opening batter Alex Davies for just 1, but left-handers Rob Yates (18) and Dan Mousley (49) put on 62 for the second wicket

England international Josh Tongue (2-30) made key breakthroughs as the first session wore on to remove both Yates and Mousley, but middle order batters Sam Hain (16*) and Beau Webster (6*) navigated the final half hour or so appropriately.

Having put the Bears in, Notts might be marginally more satisfied having taken those three wickets.

  12. Lunch at the Ovalpublished at 13:05 BST 24 April

    Surrey v Essex 128-0

A highly satisfactory morning for Essex as Dean Elgar keeps Tom Lawes at bay in the final over before lunch.

Surrey have tried five different seam options but Elgar and opening partner Paul Walter have coped with them well, the perfect response after some undistinguished batting in Essex's last two games.

Elgar has 67 not out from 100 balls and Walter is on 48.

    Josh HullImage source, Shutterstock

Right on the stroke of lunch - Josh Hull strikes!

The tall left-armer gets Colin Ingram to play on - Hull gets his deserved second wicket. Ingram looks despairingly as his middle stump is left dislodged.

It has been Leicestershire's session and Glamorgan are now four down.

Two wickets for Hull, two for Ian Holland in the opening session of the match.

  14. Lunch at Headingleypublished at 13:03 BST 24 April

    Yorkshire v Sussex 103-3

A morning where Sussex have batted serenely for long spells but Yorkshire have chipped away with important wickets to break the momentum.

None more so than Dom Bess' dismissal of Tom Haines for 64 just before lunch.

Before that, Jack White took two wickets in an over to reduce the visitors to 41-2 in the 12th over.

James Coles (24*) and Jack Leaning (2*) see Sussex over the 100 mark and through to lunch.

  15. Lunch at Durhampublished at 13:03 BST 24 April

    Durham v Lancashire 118-3

An excellent morning session on day one at Chester-le-Street which has had everything you would want from a top-of-the-table clash.

Lancashire have scored runs freely but have lost three wickets and the wicket of Keaton Jennings (44) could be key to the outcome of their first-innings.

The opener played nicely but chopped onto his own stumps 15 minutes before lunch off the bowling of Kasey Aldridge.

Durham have dropped a number of chances in the field, and may be disappointed as they sit down for some food having only taken three wickets so far.

Marcus Harris (30 not out) will return to the crease with Michael Jones (4 not out) for Lancashire.

  16. Postpublished at 13:02 BST 24 April

    Glamorgan v Leicestershire 91-3

Josh Hull is bowling well and gets Colin Ingram to edge one but it flies just over the slip cordon for four.

Hull's figures of 1-27 don't quite tell the full picture - he has bowled very well in the first session on day one at Sophia Gardens.

  17. Postpublished at 13:01 BST 24 April

    Durham v Lancashire 118-3

A glorious on drive from Marcus Harris races down to long on for four.

Matthew Potts is left on all fours but the England seamer was left helpless in preventing that one racing to the boundary.

Shot of the morning session just before lunch.

    Surrey v Essex 127-0

"The Pavilion clock is stuck at 25 past four," observes BBC Radio London's Mark Church as Surrey complete the 27th over of the morning at The Oval.

No sign of a breakthrough for the home side, who, if you recall, won the toss and put Essex in.

Haines lbw Bess 64 (Yorkshire v Sussex 95-3)

Big wicket for Yorkshire before lunch.

Tom Haines has played beautifully, finding the boundary regularly throughout the morning, but he has to go now as Dom Bess traps him lbw.

Haines is clearly very frustrated by the dismissal, I lost count of how many shrugs there were as he trudged off.

That feels like a very important breakthrough for Yorkshire.

It would have been Sussex's morning had Haines stayed in but it might be Yorkshire's now.
