Test Match Special's Alex Hartley made her predictions before this tournament. Here's what she had to say about Scotland and Ireland:

Scotland are real underdogs for me. They've got a great side because so many of them are consistently playing domestic cricket in the UK.

That means they've been able to develop really quickly, quicker than the likes of Ireland now. Having Kirstie Gordon back is a huge boost, as she's made the switch back from England.

I can see them causing an upset, but I don't think it will be enough for them to make it out of the group.

Player to watch: Ailsa Lister (batter)

    Prediction: Group-stage exit

Ireland are going to struggle and they probably won't make it out of the group.

They are too reliant on Gaby Lewis and Orla Prendergast when it comes to the batting, especially now Laura Delany has been ruled out with injury.

They played some good cricket against West Indies and Pakistan in the tri-series in the build-up to the World Cup, but I just doubt whether they'll be able to do that consistently.

Player to watch: Amy Hunter (wicketkeeper-batter)

    Prediction: Group-stage exit

  2. Sco 12-0published at 2 overs

The wind is having an effect on proceedings, with Darcey Carter's lift over mid off holding up in the breeze. Orla Prendergast runs back but the ball plops down to the turf well ahead of her as she runs back.

  3. Sco 9-0published at 1.1 overs

Arlene Kelly's right-arm medium takes the second over, and from the first ball the openers run a risky two where a better throw would have seen Carter struggling at the bowler's end.

From what I'm seeing, Ireland look really up for it. They're looking very inspired and very motivated.

  5. Sco 7-0published at 1 over

Darcey Carter nudges the second ball away for an easy single, and after a wide Katherine Fraser is off the mark with a lofted drive for one.

Carter takes her cue from her partner and also goes aerial, lifting the ball just over Prendegast at long on for the first boundary.

  6. Sco 0-0published at 0.1 overs

McGuire's brisk left-arm spin from around the wicket hits Carter's pads outside the line and we are off.

It was windier yesterday. I was hoping to watch the teams train but the sun didn't come out until the afternoon. Only South Africa were able to train outside.

I think Scotland would be the favorites coming into today's game. They've got a lot of players who regularly play domestic cricket against a lot of the England players.

The teams have emerged into a stiff breeze, and we've has stirring renditions of Flower of Scotland and Ireland's Call, helped along by a girls choir from a local school.

Ireland go into a huddle and we are all set!

  11. How's the weather looking?published at 10:25 BST 13 June

    Scotland v Ireland (10:30 BST)

The weather looks, well, a bit dreich early on.

I'm sat about a mile from Old Trafford, and it's murky, breezy and rain is in the air but the forecast hints at better to come later on today.

Absolutely the right call from Gaby Lewis. The wicket can be quite sticky and slow in the surface. It's one of those grounds where it's easier to play square.
