    Trail by 291

Nathan Lyon rattles through another over with a rare drag down only costing him a single as Harry Brook thumps the ball out to the fielder sweeping on the off side.

England are just ticking over for now and that is absolutely fine.

If we have a passage of play where Australia just bowl. That's OK. Let's tire them out. It is 40C out there.

Too straight to start from Mitchell Starc and Ben Stokes works him nicely through the leg side for three.

Harry Brook add a single to complete the scoring for the over.

If the Root-Brook partnership was important for England, this one feels even more so.

Getting up to 450 or 500 might now be out of the question but they've got to try and get to at least parity on first innings to give themselves a chance.

Ben Stokes averages 31 against off-spin. A little lower than his overall average, which is 35. Stokes has a reasonable record against Nathan Lyon, where he averages 45.

Singles bookend Nathan Lyon's latest with Harry Brook clipping to leg first ball and Ben Stokes getting off the mark with a push to point from the last.

Mitchell Starc is coming on to bowl the next over.

  7. Eng 71-4published at 17 overs

Ben Stokes comes in and sees out the over from Pat Cummins.

Joe Root will be disappointed because he didn't really need to play at that ball in the channel.

He had pulled smartly for four and then clipped through mid-wicket for two earlier in the over. He was starting to look good. And then...

The end of the Ashes for me. It is done and it is dusted. Australia, give them the urn. England have not been good enough.

It hasn't been the expansive shots, it hasn't been England making mistakes, bar Ollie Pope.

    Unfortunately, just not good enough.

That is a massive wicket. 71-4 and England are 300 runs behind. That's the wicket Australia really wanted.

    A familiar tale.

Edged and gone. England are in massive trouble.

Full ball from Pat Cummins to bring Joe Root forward and find the outside edge.

A hint of movement as Root tries to defend and no doubt that this one carries to Alex Carey.

That's the big wicket for Australia.

The reason why England have got to get clarity is because Nathan Lyon is going to be tough to play in the fourth innings of this game when the wicket has been baking in the heat - it is going to start spitting for Lyon.

Nathan Lyon continues after the interval and England play him well.

Harry Brook and Joe Root milk the Australia off-spinner for five singles in the over between them, looking comfortable doing so.

We complain about the batting but we know it’s all over the place, just as much of an issue is the bowling. Aussies have been neat and tidy and been rewarded. England can’t bowl the same ball, at a good line and length, twice in a row.

There is a huge appeal, the Australia captain really likes it but there was a huge inside edge.

The players are back out in Adelaide.

The afternoon session is upon us and, if England are to have any chance of keeping this series alive, they need to win it - and probably pretty comprehensively.

Nathan Lyon has been brilliant for Australia. He will go down as one of the greatest Australia spin bowlers behind Shane Warne.

Lyon is the greatest off-spin bowler for Australia, he knows the craft so well. He has been part of that big four for Australia for such a long time.

  18. Postpublished at 02:09 GMT 18 December 2025

The current partnership between Joe Root and Harry Brook is huge for England.

They need to stay together for a long, long time and the way the innings started showed that on this pitch that is very doable for players of their class.

However, Australia have their tails up, Scott Boland started well and Nathan Lyon is already finding some turn.

England need to stick at it, wait for this ball to get a bit older and softer and make the Aussie bowlers work in the sweltering heat.

Sounds simple, it never is in Ashes cricket.

From 37-0, England so nearly found themselves 42-4 when Scott Boland located Joe Root's inside edge.

The ball flicked off his back pad and when through to Alex Carey.

However, after checking the replays countless times, the third umpire eventually decided that it bounced just short of the wicketkeeper.

Huge relief for England but they remain right up against it heading into the afternoon session...
