The pressure really ramped up on England when Ollie Pope flicked a fairly harmless delivery from Nathan Lyon straight to mid-wicket.

A wicket in his first over for the Australia off-spinner...

It is the two big names returning to the Australia XI that have done the damage with the ball.

After England had moved smartly to 37-0, Pat Cummins made the breakthrough with a cracking delivery to have Zak Crawley caught behind...

Right OK, let's get into this straightaway...

For all that England's batting has quite rightly been criticised in this series, I don't think there was much they could do about a couple of the wickets this morning.

Zak Crawley certainly got an absolute beauty, Ben Duckett got a good one as well.

    Ollie Pope, less so.

Here in Sydney watching this pitiful collapse. We look so casual. Embarrassing. Where’s the fire in the bellies?

    Thanks, Mike.

Well, it's not an ideal position that England find themselves in, is it?

With about half an hour left in the session, they'd have been quite happy. Three quick wickets later and Australia are right on top.

It could have been worse had the third umpire deemed that catch off Joe Root had carried but as it is, where there is Root (and Harry Brook) there is hope for the tourists...

A fair few England fans would have been thinking they'd enjoy a few hours of near chance-less batting after lunch.

A good number will now be heading to bed.

Sam Drury is staying up though - he's here to guide you through the next session.

That session is definitely to Australia.

Those last three English wickets will hurt England. Nathan Lyon is starting to look dangerous already and England need to find a way. Harry Brook and Joe Root are key - both these guys have to get big runs out there.

The Ashes is slipping through England's fingers at the moment.

    And that's lunch.

Harry Brook picks up his first boundary, guiding Nathan Lyon's ball nicely to the boundary at cover point.

England's two batters head back to the dressing room with some work to do in the afternoon session.

Australia have bowled better areas and are more consistent in those areas that you want to see.

Joe Root brings up England's fifty with a four, sending Scott Boland's delivery away through mid-wicket.

We'll have one more over before lunch.

The pitch this morning has looked to be far easier for the batters, flatter compared to the tougher conditions in the first session on day one.

The PitchViz rating has dropped 50% so far today compared to yesterday. England will be extremely disappointed to be three down already.

PitchViz Rating - Third Test, Adelaide:

    • Day one, session one : 4.8
    • Day two, session one : 2.4

I was onboard the Bazball attitude, but when did it descend into playing rubbish shots with no accountability?

A first four for Joe Root.

He breaks out the reverse sweep and sends Nathan Lyon's delivery to the ropes at backward point.

    Eng 42-3

    Joe Root survives!

A thick edge on Snicko as he edges onto the pad, but the ball is grounded just before it reaches Alex Carey's gloves.

The third umpire looks at numerous replays and finally sends the not out signal to the big screen.

"Same old Aussies, always cheating" is the call from the England supporters on the grass bank.

Technology, again. Technology and these catches... I reckon it is out, but I think it might be given not out.

    Another one?!

Scott Boland breaks through Joe Root's defences - it's clipped something on the way through to Alex Carey, but what was it?

Australia, looking to press their advantage, ask the third umpire to take a look.
