Pat Cummins, who has used himself in short, sharp bursts so far in his comeback Test, returns with a maiden.

Ben Stokes defends the sixth ball and it bounces behind him, briefly worrying the England captain, who thinks it might be going back onto his stumps.

Thankfully for England, that is not the case.

The fact of the matter is, this Australia team, so far, have out-disciplined England in all facets of the game. They have been better.

They have played harder cricket when it has mattered. The tail-end of Australia have dug in, kept England out there for a period of time.

The bowling has not looked easy for England batters. There are a few struggling for form, mindset, confidence. The only way you get confidence is by being out in the middle.

A more productive over for England with six coming from it.

Ben Stokes gets three of them with a flick through mid-wicket before a thick outside edge from Harry Brook goes along the ground past gully to add two more to the England total.

A look at the score now shows the tourists are in a position from which Australia recovered yesterday to put up their 371...

Ben Stokes v Nathan Lyon in Test Matches

    • Overall - 32 innings, 413 runs, 9 dismissals, 45.9 average
    • In England - 16 innings, 233 runs, 4 dismissals, 58.3 average
    • In Australia - 16 innings, 180 runs, 5 dismissals, 36.0 average

Stokes has faced Lyon in as many innings (16) in Australia as he has now in England, but the left-hander doesn't have the same record in Australia, averaging 36.0 compared to a significantly higher 58.3 in England.

Better line from Nathan Lyon to Harry Brook, slightly wider outside off to the right-hander.

Eventually he does get a bit straight and Brook nurdles for another single.

Very methodical stuff from Brook so far. Just one boundary for him so far, he's batting sensibly and has rotated the strike well.

Just slightly fuller from Scott Boland and it was nicely punched through the extra cover area from Ben Stokes.

This England's team ceiling is high, but their basement is quite low. Australia's ceiling is quite high, but their basement is one floor down.

Scott Boland, who I think was the pick of the Australian bowlers before lunch without taking a wicket, is into the attack.

Another single for Harry Brook brings Ben Stokes on strike.

"Get back, Brooky!" he shouts after punching the ball back towards mid-off but seeing the fielder come across and swoop from extra cover.

Top shot to end the over, Stokes driving firmly through mid-off for four.

A bit of a suffocation process at the moment. It is good bowling by Australia, and they have their foot on the throat.

Harry Brook is again able to work a single from the first ball of a Nathan Lyon over.

That suits the spinner just fine, he's looking far happier bowling to Ben Stokes at the moment.

    Five dot balls follow.

I don't mind us losing the Ashes in Australia, it's just so hard to win it down here. But it's just the whimper we go out with every game, I just want to see that little bit more fight. Aussies always come to the UK ready for a battle, I don't feel like we always reciprocate that.

Ben Stokes is fine to carry on and whips a full, straight ball from Mitchell Starc out to deep mid-wicket for a single.

Harry Brook pinches a quick single from the last ball of the over and will keep strike.

    Have we got it wrong?

Are the Australians better than we thought or are we not as good as we thought?

I felt pretty confident that we were going to win one or two down here.

Oof. We're going to have another break in play as Ben Stokes is clocked by a sharp Mitchell Starc bouncer.

The bowler quickly checks the England skipper is OK after the ball thuds into the back of his helmet.

    A concussion check will follow.

Nathan Lyon is getting significantly higher drift on average (Lyon 2.22° v Jacks 1.22°) and turn (Lyon 5.27° v Jacks 4.05°) and bowling slightly quicker (Lyon 55.3 mph v Jacks 52.5 mph) than England's part-time spinner in this Test so far.

I don't know...Well, I do know. We are staring down the barrel here. It's a bit like the old days of Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath.

It is a bit like Nathan Lyon, Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc. There is no respite and you can't get away.

If you were in any doubt as to who was in charge of this game, Marnus Labuschagne's incessant chirping from slip and the volume of his cries of "Gary" in this Nathan Lyon over tell you all you need to know.

Arguably the reason England fans should be most annoyed by this batting display.

  18. Eng 81-4published at 21 overs

Maiden over from Mitchell Starc, no runs off the bat with just a leg bye from it.

    Solid defence from Ben Stokes.
