    WICKETpublished at 91.2 overs

Lyon lbw b Archer 9 (Aus 371 all out)

    And that, indeed, is that.

An umpire's call with ball predicted to clip the top of the stumps.

Jofra Archer has his fourth Test five-fer, finishing with figures of 5-53 from his 20.2 overs.

  2. Australia reviewpublished at 91.2 overs

    That's probably that.

Jofra Archer raps the pads of Nathan Lyon and the umpire's finger goes up.

Nathan Lyon reviews, because he might as well.

As much as England have started well and still yet to bat. I just can’t see us pulling this series back now. How do we not have a solid spinner in the side either? Flintoff for coach?

I do not like the short-ball tactic. It is not doing it for me.

Being a tailender myself, I used to love it when players bowled short. Unless they play the hook shot, you're not going to get them out.

  5. Aus 371-9published at 91 overs

Nick in the Eastern stand (23:59) gets his wish and Josh Tongue replaces Brydon Carse.

The Nottinghamshire seamer has a knack of blasting through the tail but can't winkle out Nathan Lyon and Scott Boland in his first outing.

The last wicket partnership is now worth 23 from 34 balls.

  6. Aus 370-9published at 90 overs

A first four for Nathan Lyon.

The Australia spinner guides a rapid delivery from Jofra Archer through backward point with a cut shot.

Australia have added 44 from seven overs this morning.

WHY IS CARSE BOWLING? Bring on Tongue, now.

    Nick, Eastern Stand

Nothing more infuriating than watching England trying to knock over the tail.

  8. Aus 365-9published at 89 overs

Just one single off Brydon Carse's third over of the day.

Just a reminder - England took the new ball at the first opportunity yesterday evening, so it's now nine overs old.

Scott Boland is coming out of his shell. He has added a few shots to his repertoire. This is starting to get a little bit annoying now.

One more wicket for England. You don't want it to start edging in and Australia getting to 370 as you then drag yourself off the pitch. But it is good stubborn resistance from Australia and England will be disappointed with the first couple of overs.

    Hostility is required.

Top of the stumps, quick - the delivery to dismiss Starc was by far Archer's quickest delivery of the day.

We have had eight boundaries and this is the fifth over of the day...

  12. Aus 364-9published at 88 overs

    Scott BolandImage source, PA Media

    Oooof, close.

Scott Boland wafts his bat at Jofra Archer's delivery and sends a thick edge flying past the cordon. Harry Brook is at second slip, but that was wide of him - no chance of a catch there, perhaps if they'd have a third.

A second four for Boland, and an irritated Archer responds by firing a ball past the tailenders' outside edge.

Boland then adds another boundary from the over's final delivery, cutting to the backward point ropes - useful runs for Australia.

  13. Aus 356-9published at 87 overs

Scott Boland gets off the mark with a single to mid-wicket, bringing up Australia's 350.

Having been returned to the strike by Nathan Lyon, the tail-ender drives Brydon Carse through mid-off, with the ball just about reaching the rope.

It's a decent score for Australia. I think Australia will have fancied 400-420 runs, but they have scratched and fought their way there.

Would love to see a bit more energy from England when they get these wickets. The celebration looked as if the Aussies had 600 on the board. Yeah, we’ve had a poor start, but you’d say we’re well ahead of the game.

    Mike, Sheffield

  16. Aus 348-9published at 86 overs

Scott Boland is the last man out of the hutch and Jofra Archer immediately beats the number eleven's bat.

The three remaining balls pass without Boland getting off the mark.

Meanwhile television replays show a bit of tension between Archer and Ben Stokes in the post-wicket huddle. Evidently words had been had after the four that started the seamer's second over.

That was Mitchell Starc's third fifty-plus score in Test matches in 2025, the first time he's scored more than two half-centuries in a calendar year.

Mitchell Starc has got Australia out of trouble - that extra 50 runs just means something psychologically.

Now Jofra Archer, hunt your fifer. Make sure you get that.

  19. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 85.2 overs

    Starc b Archer 54 (Aus 348-9)

    Four more and out!

Jofra Archer starts with another wide-ish delivery, which Mitchell Starc carves over point, but his next delivery is on the stumps and Starc plays around it.

Bails fly and a really useful knock comes to an end.
