Joe Root and Harry Brook to bat England back into the Ashes? If both get 100+ England could be looking at a 150 lead.

    This is a road.

This is the best day for batting in the whole series by a country mile.

If England plays Nathan Lyon well, then they should have a bit of success. You feel that this is the kind of pitch for many of the England players that they can have a great deal of success on.

    More boundaries for Ben Duckett.

He tucks Pat Cummins away square, then sends another cover drive scudding across the Adelaide outfield.

It makes me nervous watching some of these England players bat.

Some more width from Mitchell Starc and slightly fuller.

Ben Duckett is good on the short-ball and he knows he can flash his hands through it.

And four more for Ben Duckett!

He strikes at thin air off Mitchell Starc's first delivery, but dispatches the second to the cover boundary.

Here are Jofra Archer's five wickets.

The England quick finished with 5-53 in Australia's 371.

It is good to see Pat Cummins back.

There has been so much speculation throughout the series about when he was going to come back.

Ben Duckett has left one! A very rare sight.

  8. Eng 7-0published at 2 overs

    Four for Ben Duckett!

The England opener gets his innings going by driving Pat Cummins' penultimate delivery through the covers.

A further single sees him retain the strike.

At an average speed of 90.0 mph, that was Mitchell Starc's quickest opening over of the five innings so far in this Ashes.

I'm not sure it says it all, Mark - he did take 5-53.

That was a heart-in-mouth moment. Not what anybody, as an England fan, wants to be seeing.

Zak Crawley gets England off the mark straight away, knocking the ball away off his pads for a single.

Mitchell Starc then sets about troubling Ben Duckett - he draws a leading edge as the opener tries to work the ball square, entices a waft and then sears a delivery past the Nottinghamshire man's bat.

And here comes Pat Cummins for his first over of the series.

The true test of Stokes’s words after Brisbane comes now. Can this crop of batters play the match situation and the conditions as they should? Or are we about to go at Australia in the same old way, and be seen off in the same old way?

Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett walk out to face the Australian attack.

Crawley will take heart from his 76 and 44 in Brisbane, although perhaps will be disappointed he didn't press on from those totals and reach a century.

Ben Duckett has a high score of 28 in this series, and will be desperate for a decent innings.

Mitchell Starc gets the first over, as per.

This is an opportunity for England to stay in the Ashes. If they have a howler of a day, then it could be Australia's Ashes.

This is such an important day for England with the bat.

England cannot be reliant on Joe Root or Ben Stokes. Harry Brook needs to stand up, he has got to take his time if he is out in the middle. The top three are going to be so important.

In the Bazball era, since the start of June 2022 - England have bowled almost 50% of the deliveries shorter than 8m at an average length of 8.22m to lower order batters (number 8 to 11), the shortest of all bowling attacks in the timeline.

In the Bazball era, England's pace bowlers have looked to attack the lower order batters (#8 - #11) with short and hard length deliveries - but with not of lot of comparative success. They average 25.5 with deliveries in the 8-10m length range, while it drops to 10.5 when landing it on traditional good length in the 6-8m range.

England should actually take some encouragement from how easy it looked to bat for the tail there. Scott Boland driving on the up! It’s an absolute road - time for the batters to go big, there’s runs to be had here with low-risk shots.

Jofra Archer has been fantastic with the ball. He has bowled quick, and he has been at his best. He has been brilliant, picking up a fifer. It was a frustrating watch when England were bowling short to the tailenders.
