  1. Aus 79-5published at 30 overs

Alex Carey steps out over the boundary ropes and is greeted by a chorus of boos from the England fans, who evidently haven't forgiven him for Jonny Bairstow's controversial stumping at Lord's in 2023.

The wicketkeeper gets off the mark immediately with a single behind square.

That's a massive wicket for England there. Not sure what Travis Head was trying to do, the shot wasn't on.

That's just what England needed to get back in there. They're just under 100 runs ahead.

Travis Head on the pull, doesn't time it. England have conjured up a wicket from somewhere.

    Head c Carse b Stokes 21 (Aus 76-5)

    The skipper breaks the partnership!

Ben Stokes has a wicket with his seventh ball of the day as Travis Head pulls straight to Brydon Carse at mid-on.

Australia had begun to look quite settled, but will now have to rebuild - quite a strange shot from Head who has been in poor form leading into this Test.

  5. Aus 76-4published at 29 overs

Brydon Carse starts with three dot balls, before a couple of singles and a Cameron Green two through gully.

  6. What you've missedpublished at 08:57 GMT 21 November 2025

Only just waking up? The Ashes is already well and truly alive.

England have already been bowled out. Their batting was pretty poor to be dismissed for 172 in just 32.5 overs after choosing to bat.

But England's bowling has been superb. Jofra Archer dismissed debutant Jake Weatherald for a two-ball duck and then got Marnus Labuschagne for nine.

Brydon Carse then chipped in with the huge wicket of Australia's stand-in captain Steve Smith. He was caught at second slip.

It got even better when Usman Khawaja was removed by Brydon Carse, while Mark Wood rattled Cameron Green's grille with a brutal bouncer.

The Aussie have dug in a little since, though.

England batting performance got off to a poor start when Zak Crawley was caught in the slips in the first over. They were three down inside an hour as Mitchell Starc (7-58) wreaked havoc with the new ball.

Harry Brook (52 off 61) and Ollie Pope (46 off 58) did some rebuilding but, with Starc in electric form, Brook dismissal sparked a collapse of the final five wickets falling for 12 runs.

Play can continue to 09:50 GMT.

Thanks Elizabeth - Australia are 100 runs behind now.

Meanwhile this partnership is worth 41.

  9. Aus 72-4published at 28 overs

The pace options keep coming. England captain Ben Stokes enters the attack and concedes three runs, Cameron Green driving down the ground but being denied a boundary by the slow outfield.

And with that, I'm off. Here's Mike Peter to guide you through to the end of the day.

England have drawn 41.7% false shots in the first 25 overs of this innings.

Since such data was collected (2006), that is the fifth-highest % of false shots drawn by any bowling team in Test cricket in the first 25 overs of an innings.

In three of those four previous occasions, teams were bowled out within the first 25 overs.

  11. Aus 69-4published at 27 overs

Gus Atkinson responds to his previous expensive over with a maiden. Travis Head flays a little recklessly at one. Australian fans will be thinking "not the time, Travis".

  12. Aus 69-4published at 26 overs

Another good over for Australia, with Cameron Green taking Mark Wood for eight. He pummels the final ball through mid-off for four, with Wood hitting the deck in his follow through.

Green, remember, was dropped on five. He and Head have put on 38 (52) for the fifth wicket.

England have got to remind themselves of what worked so well in those first 20 overs, bowling consistently.

  14. Aus 61-4published at 25 overs

A rare expensive over. The first three deliveries are either too full or too wide from Gus Atkinson and Travis Head collects eight runs.

Ollie Pope relocates to third and is immediately into the action, an ugly slash from Head heading in his direction. A touch of fortune there for Australia.
